Karelia: Stamps: East Karelia: Stamps: 1941 Issues

Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise indicated. Karelian stamps are difficult to keep in stock; if you do not see what you are seeking, please send your want list; I am happy to offer items on approval when they become available. All the listed items are available for viewing on approval.

The small-size Lion-type stamps of the 1941 Issue exist with two types of overprints. The difference is that the middle "A" of Type I has a flat top while the Type II has a pointed top. Type I is the more common.

Scott #N2 Type I [October 1941 1.75 mk with Black Overprint Type I (top of middle A is squared off)] Used with VF centering on small piece with almost perfectly centered 4 November 1941 AUNUS town cancellation. (At this point in time, Aunus was "just" a Karelian town, but it is the same place that had the "Aunus" overprinted Finnish stamps in 1919.) While this cancellation is not "scarce", it is hard to find so well centered on Karelian stamps.

Scott #N5 Type I [October 1941 3.50 mk with Black Overprint Type I (top of middle A is squared off)] Used with VF centering on piece with a nicely-struck 2 November 1941 AUNUS town cancellation to one side. (At this point in time, Aunus was "just" a Karelian town, but it is the same place that had the "Aunus" overprinted Finnish stamps in 1919.) This stamp is hard to find with such nice centering -- a "normal" Used VF example sells for $10.

While being on this particular piece does not increase the value of this Used stamp, if it were removed from the piece both the town name and the year would be lost, thus I thought it best to leave it on the piece. The price is the same as for the single Used F-VF stamp.

Scott #N13 [November 1941 5 mk with Green Overprint] Used with XF centering and a neat, crisp AUNUS 5 November 1941 cancellation (this stamp was issued on 1 November). [The town of Aunus, in Karelia, is also the same location that issued the Aunus-overprinted stamps 1919.] This stamp is quite hard to find with such nice centering and also with a neat cancellation with the town name fully visible. (The price is for the exceptional centering; nothing is added for the cancellation.)

N13 [November 1941 5 mk with Green Overprint] Used with VF centering and neat, well centered circular part of machine MILITARY "KENTTÄPOSTIA" cancellation. The date is faint, but may be 18 January 1942. The type of postmark was mostly used on unfranked (free) soldiers envelopes, but is found from time to time on Finnish-stamped and Karelian-stamps envelopes. Any such examples are virtually always non-philatelic. Examples of Karelian stamps with this postmark are rarely offered.
