Norway: Bargains: Stamps Scott 1-21

These bargain-priced stamps are attractive, but most have hidden flaws. You can save a tremendous amount of money when you add such stamps to your collection. Each stamp is one of a kind, so please let me know if I may substitute a different example (that looks as good or better, for the same cost) if the stamp you order has sold. If you have any doubts, all are available for approval viewing. If you are seeking stamps of this quality and price level from any of the Scandinavian countries, just send along your want list -- I will be happy to send bargains on approval. Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise stated.

2 [1857 2 skilling Oscar] Used with Superb centering but very tiny tear between two perfs and tiny thin spot. Remarkably neat, light cancel and perfect centering. Brilliant color -- an outstanding appearing example! Seldom is such a pretty example offered for such a low price. This example would otherwise be $180!

3 [1857 3 sk Oscar] Mint with Fine centering, but expertly regummed and with a natural inclusion in the paper (in this case a thickening in the paper, but does NOT appear on the surface either on the front or back). Attractive, clean color and excellent perforations. Otherwise an original gum example with this centering would be about $250.

6 [1863 "2 SKILL" Coat of Arms] Used with F-VF centering and remarkably light, neat (FREDR)IKSHALD 1867 cancellation, but with a couple short perforations on right side (where they blend in and are not noticeable). A very pretty example of a very scarce stamp, with quite remarkable, fresh color -- the color is darker and more orange than is usually seen.

6 [1863 "2 SKILL" Lion Coat of Arms] Used with Average centering, but with a thin. Strong color, but slightly messy cancellation. Facit 2022 value is SEK 2000 [about US$240 (4/2022)]. Normally around $65 for this centering and $190 for F-VF! Price very low, but is a completely genuine stamp.

7 [1863 "3 SKILL" Lion Coat of Arms] Used with F-VF centering, but reperforated, and a few blunted perfs, and a some small faults not visible from the front. A nice looking example of a scarce at a great price. A faultless Used F-VF example would be at least $400! A key stamp missing from most collections.

8 PAIR (Plate II, Type VIII and VII) Mint with F-VF+ centering, but with only small trace of gum remaining. Each stamp has a thin and the left stamp has a vertical crease on the right frame line that is very hard to see without 10x magnification. Otherwise would sell for around $600 as two singles. Wonderfully bright color and overall fresh appearance.

10, Facit #10b Dark Brown (scarce color) [1863 "24 SKILL" Lion Coat of Arms] Used with XF centering and Superb 1865 LAURVIG town cancellation, but with small tear in top margin above E of NORGE. Used in the correct time period. Facit 2022 value SEK 1300 [about US$155] for normal quality. Without the defect, a stamp of this appearance would easily fetch $400!

10 [1863 24 skilling Coat of Arms] Used with F-VF+ centering and a full, VF DRAMMEN 1890s two-ring cancellation, used in the later period. The skilling stamps remained valid for use, converted to the new currency, through March 31, 1908. A very attractive example; this stamp is scarce used in such nice condition, even from the later period.

10 [1863 "24 SKILL" Coat of Arms] Used with VF centering, but loose corner perf and tiny thin at upper left. Neat, nearly complete, fully dated 27 December 1870 CHRISTIANIA cancellation. The catalog value for this stamp is for proper time period (pre-1877) cancellations, such as this example. A great-looking example at a very reasonable price.

10, Facit #10a Light Grayish Brown [1863 "24 SKILL" Lion Coat of Arms] Used with Just-Fine centering, but with a thin. Unusual usage in 1877, after the currency change, but while still valid converted to the new currency (and with single-ring cancel, still considered used in the correct period). Facit 2022 value SEK 1100 [about US$130 [4/2022]; without the thin, would be $59.

11 CLEAR PRINT, Facit #11c [1868 "1 SKILL 1" Lion Coat of Arms] Mint, hinged, with typical Average centering. Full original gum with a hinge in one corner where it apparently held together a block. This example is very obviously the Clear Print, but the color is nearly black rather than the usual dark gray for the Clear Print. Facit 2024 assigns a value of SEK 1500 to this printing, more than twice that of the most common color of the other two Blurred Print printings.

13 [1868 "3 SKILL 3" gray violet Coat of Arms] Mint, no gum (as usual), with F-VF centering. Faint soiling in upper right corner, light bend (not a crease), and with a tiny corner crease (only visible from the reverse) in the upper left corner. Despite that description, this is a very attractive example. This is a very scarce stamp in uncanceled condition. If one could find it, an example of this centering with original gum would cost at least $500.

13 Red Violet Clear Print, Facit #31b, NK #13a [1868 "3 SKILL 3" Lion Coat of Arms] Used Average-Fine centered example of the very scarce Red Violet color with light, fully dated 1871 cancellation. Very fresh appearance with intense color. This stamp is much harder to find than the catalog values suggest. A VF example would be about $350!

15 Used Fine, but extremely tiny thin spot, with unusual cross-hatched pen manuscript cancellation. Very neat and attractive. I cannot recall previously in 48 years having a Norwegian cancel that looked quite like this.

19b, Facit #19a Brownish Violet on Thin Bluish Paper [1872 4 Skilling Posthorn (1873 printing)] Used with Average centering and proper period cancellation. Tiny tear in bottom margin and some blunted perforations. Red mark in upper right corner from postal rate marking on a foreign cover. This example is an unusual light color shade for the Brownish Violet and perhaps deserves a listing of its own. Facit 2022 value is SEK 600 [about US$72 (4/2022)]. Priced very low!

21 [1873 7 skilling Posthorn] Used with VF+ centering with neat, very light, proper period single-ring cancellation. An unusually attractive example with exceptionally strong color. Even though the single-ring cancellations are considered to be used in the proper time period, this example is offered at a lower price because a date is not visible -- but it is proper period use. Otherwise this would be $95! Such attractive, well-centered examples are hard to find!
