Norway: Stamps: Official Stamps Scott #O1-O8

The full Norway Stamps section is developing one chunk at a time. However, I do have a very comprehensive stock of NH, Mint Hinged, and Used Norwegian stamps and would be happy to send stamps on approval from your want list, using your choice of Scott (which I prefer unless for varieties listed by Facit or NK), Facit, or NK numbers.

The images of most unused stamps shown in this section are standard (representative) images from my image library unless they are labeled as being the "ACTUAL item". The standard images are presented to show the designs of the stamp issues, not to show the specific individual stamps being offered. The centering of the stamps in the standard images is usually Superb or XF or VF quality; again the standard (representative) images are not images of the actual stamps being offered. For centering / quality information, please refer to the item description. Most early stamps had multiple printings, thus color shades can vary; the colors in the standard images are usually the most often seen printings/colors. On the other hand, the images of canceled stamps normally of the actual item being offered. Below each image is text stating if the image is the "ACTUAL item" or a "REPRESENTATIVE image of stamp design".

Scott #O1 Lilac [1926 5 øre Official First Issue] Used with XF centering and VF (inverted) #656 4-ring numeral cancellation. This device was used in two time periods, in two locations, during the lifetime of this stamp: 1923-04-01 through 1927-06-30 SMØRFJORD (on ship mail); and 1927-07-01 through ???? at OPSTAD TVANGSARBEIDSHUS. Nicely struck, fully readable examples of 4-ring numeral cancels are scarce. Any 4-ring-numeral cancellation on an Official stamp is very scarce because the cancels were usually only used at places so small that there was rarely an Official mail coming from them.

Scott #O3 Blackish Ultramarine [1926 15 øre Official First Issue] Mint, lightly hinged, with Fine centering. PLATE VARIETY: "white spot at base of RK". While the first Officials stamps are rich with tiny plate varieties, a variety this obvious -- and especially affecting the lettering -- would normally be catalog listed on a "regular" postage stamp.

Scott #O3 Blackish Ultramarine [1926 15 øre Official First Issue] Used with XF centering. PLATE VARIETY: "frame lines with open gap at upper right corner". While the first Officials stamps are rich with tiny plate varieties, a variety this obvious would normally be catalog listed on a "regular" postage stamp. Any example of the 15 øre stamp is "very scarce" with such nice centering.

Scott #O3 Blackish Violet Ultramarine [1926 15 øre Official First Issue] ROUGH PERFORATION VARIETY. Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with Superb centering. Extremely small-hole, rough perforations. An unusual color. The rough perforation stamps tend to be hard to find in Mint or NH condition because early collectors often failed to recognize that the rough perforations are a collectible variety and did not retain them. The 15 øre stamp is "very scarce" in any condition with such nice centering.

Scott #O4 Brownish Red [1926 20 øre Official First Issue] HORIZONTAL PAIR Used with XF centering and light, but well-centered cancellation. The perforations are rough on the left side, but that is likely a "natural" problem due to damaged perforating pins. This stamp had several printings, so there are more than the two main colors. This color shade is about halfway between the two, but if I am forced to describe it as one or the other, it is closer to the Brownish Red, though it does have tinges of violet. Used multiples (even just pairs) of the First Issue Officials are surprisingly hard to find. I offer this both as the pair and as a very well-centered example of this in-between color.

Scott #O6 BLUE on THICK YELLOWISH PAPER [1926 40 øre Official First Issue] ROUGH PERFORATION VARIETY. Used with XF centering and neat, light cancellation. Extremely small-hole, rough perforations. This color shade is most obvious end of the "blue group" spectrum. The paper is clearly thick and yellowish -- there are catalog-listed regular postage stamps on similar paper as well, but they have not been listed for the Officials. A remarkably unusual example.

Scott #O8 Lilac [1926 2 on 5 øre Surcharged Official First Issue] HORIZONTAL 3-STRIP Used with XF/F-VF centering and neat, light cancellations. Used multiples (even just pairs and 3-strips) of the First Issue Officials are surprisingly hard to find. This surcharged Lilac color had less than 10% the print quantity of the more usual Brownish Lilac; as three single stamps with their respective centering, the individual prices would total $12.85.
