Sweden: Seals: WWII-Era National Civil Defense Seals
The term "seals" generally refers to "Charity Seals", which as a broad term includes Christmas Seals. Charity seals are typically fundraising seals issued by organizations, just as Christmas Seals, but not associated with Christmas. There have been a wide range of Charity Seals issued in Sweden, but, other than Christmas Seals, Swedish Charity Seals are far less often seen than from Denmark and many other countries. There are many Swedish Charity Seals that I know to exist, but which I have never seen, or of which I have only seen one or two examples in 46 years. Used examples are usually quite scarce and seals used (tied by postmark) on cover or card are extremely scarce.

During the WWII era, several types and series of fundraising seals were issued for Swedish national / civil defense, including "På Post" (On Guard), "Riks Luftskydds Förbundet" (Royal Air Defense Society), etc. When encountered, these seals are usually found uncanceled, without gum, having been soaked from envelopes. Mint examples with gum are usually much scarcer. Mint blocks or larger units are usually extremely scarce. Nicely canceled examples are often scarce and seals used (tied by postmark) on cover or card are usually extremely scarce. Because Sweden was not an occupied country, these seals have not obtained the notoriety (and value) that WWII-era seals have for Norway and Denmark.

Royal Air Defense Society ("Riks Luftskydds Förbundet") 10 öre in red, blue, and black. Soldier holding shield against formation of airplanes. Denomination and text in white. Small format, design 17 x 22 mm. Perforation 11. NH VF SHEET OF 50 (10 columns x 5 rows). Has irrelevant small ink stain on lower right corner of selvage; otherwise perfect quality. In 38 years I can only recall seeing one or two mint with-gum singles of this label, perhaps 5-10 no-gum singles, and one or two canceled singles. I do not recall ever seeing an example on cover (untied or tied). If I had a NH VF single of this label, I would price it at $5, making the break-up value of this sheet $250! And I certainly have never seen anything as stunning as this sheet! An important Swedish WWII-era artifact that helps illustrate one of the reasons why the Germans bypassed Sweden.
