Scott #C20 [1935 25c blue Trans-Pacific Airmail] Top plate number 21474 plate block of 6 with medium margin. Mint, with Fine centering. The lower left stamp is lightly hinged; the other five stamps are NH. Fresh and bright. (Scott 2022 $20 as NH plate block.)

Scott #C20 [1935 25c blue Trans-Pacific Airmail] Bottom plate number 21476 plate block of 6 with narrow margin. Mint, lightly hinged only on top center stamp; the other five stamps NH. XF centering as the whole plate block, but a couple of the single stamps even better. Extremely nice centering for this plate block -- usually the centering varies greatly within the block. Wonderfully fresh and attractive with dark blue color shade. (Scott 2022 $20 as NH plate block with normal VF centering. This has one LH stamp, but the centering is much, much nicer than VF.)

Scott #26A Dull Red [1857 3c (red) Washington Type IV, Perf 15.5] Used VF with neat manuscript cancellation. Many examples of 26A on the market are actually other types; I believe that this is a real 26A; it is clearly visible at top and bottom, on both sides, that the side frame lines do not continue beyond the stamp design. Very attractive example of a very scarce stamp. I guarantee the identity of this stamp. (Scott 2022 $150 for handstamped cancel, but only $40 for manuscript cancel.)

Scott #30A DARK BROWN [1860 5c brown Jefferson, Perf 15.5, Type II] Used F-VF+ (three clear margins and one just barely touching) with modest town cancellation. One very tiny tear in bottom margin (requires 10x magnifying glass to see). This stamp virtually always has small margins at top and bottom. A beautiful example with deep color (the dark brown shade mentioned by Scott) and neat, almost-face-free, cancellation. Very nice centering for this stamp which is missing from most collections. (Scott 2022 value $300.)

Scott #31 [1857 10c green Washington Type I, Perf 15.5] Used with F-VF appearance, however has been expertly repaired and reperforated (the previous owner did not know of the problems). An attractive example of a stamp that is both very scarce and very hard to find without serious defects or repairs. Priced very low for such a scarce stamp. (Scott 2022 $1100.)

Scott #WS3 [1917 5 dollars green Washington; War Savings, Rouletted] Mint, no gum (as usual), with Just-Fine centering. Has faint crease only visible on the reverse with oblique lighting; it may be pre-printing (the paper used for this issue was of lower quality than normal stamp paper). Wonderfully fresh example with deep color and crisp engraving impression. An extremely scarce stamp missing from almost all collections. Very scarce with gum; virtually all uncanceled examples are without gum. (Scott 2022 $1200 with gum, but without gum as this example is $475.)

Scott #WS4 [July 1919 5 dollars blue Franklin; War Savings] Mint, moderately hinged, with Superb centering. A wonderful example with brilliant color, perfect centering, perfect perforations, and perfect gum (but hinged). Faint, inconsequential, natural gum bend mentioned only for complete accuracy. Scott #PS15 [1941 $5 brown Postal Savings, Minute Man]. Wide-top PLATE NUMBER F22737 example. Mint, lightly hinged, with VF centering, but with moderate crease. The diagonal crease appears to be a "natural" paper stress crease that is often seen on larger-size stamps of this era, but it is a crease just the same. Remarkably fresh with great color, perfect perforations, and perfect gum (lightly hinged). Despite a relatively modest catalog value for such a high denomination stamp, this is often quite hard to find and is missing from most collections. Plate number examples are scarce. (Scott 2022 $42.50 for NH VF; this is not NH and it does have the crease, but the plate number largely makes up for it.)

CSA Scott #6/7 Ten Cent Davis Private Reprinting or Counterfeit. Very intense dark blue, rough impression, on white paper with white gum, probably dating from the 1930s-1950s. Couple small thin spots. FAKE perfectly centered 5-pointed star "cancellation" in gray-black with another FAKE hand-drawn "RICH(MOND)" "cancellation. While everything about this, perhaps except the original plate, is bogus, it is an excellent item for the reference collection of a specialist. While I do not promote selling fakes, such items must be documented and retained for the education of future generations of collectors.

Scott #PR115 [1895 Designs: 2c black Freedom (on Capitol Dome), Watermarked] Mint, lightly hinged, with VF-XF centering. Guideline on left side. My information on the plate layout of the 1895 stamps includes an assumption regarding the size and layout of the printer sheet and the panes into which they were cut. I have not been able to find images of any complete sheets or information for the 1895 sheet or pane sizes. This example is from the left column of a right pane, either from the top or bottom four rows, possible on 8 stamps out of 100(?). Per Scott, the pre-1895 designs were printed in sheets of 100 and thus it is likely that the 1895 issue was as well. Based on that... Printed in printer sheets of 100 (?), 10 columns (?) and 10 rows. The sheets were divided horizontally (into top and bottom halves) by cutting between sheet rows 5 and 6 (documented by images). The unwatermarked stamps were issued February 1, 1985. The watermarked version started to appear in Fall 1895 and continued with new watermarked denominations into 1897 as the need arose. The plates originally only had arrows in the four margins to indicate where to divide into panes, but the purpose of the arrows in the top margin is unclear to me unless it was intended that the 50-panes be further divided into 25-panes. In November 1895, after production of unwatermarked stamps had been discontinued, actual guidelines were added to the plates, at the arrow locations, both vertically and horizontally (documented by images). A significant-enough quantity of multiples exist spanning the vertical guidelines that there obviously there was not a division into 25-panes early in the processing. Thus... a) Guidelines can only exist on the watermarked stamps. b) The straight-edges only exist horizontally, at the top or bottom of stamps (depending upon the cutting, the guideline -- only present on printings starting in November 1895 -- may have been cut off one stamp and only be on the stamp above or below). c) Vertical guidelines are always perforated. d) Horizontal guidelines are always with a straight-edge (but not the other way around). e) There are no corner straight-edges. f) Corner guidelines can exist. g) Horizontal pairs and larger multiples exist spanning a guideline. Examples with guidelines and/or straight-edges are now quite hard to find. I think that collecting the straight-edge and guideline positions is quite challenging and rewarding. This is not a "scarce" stamp, however, examples this nice and with a guideline are surprisingly hard to find. [For this issue, if anybody can clarify, with pointers to references, the plate layout and the reason for the vertical guideline, I would very much like to learn more about this issue.]

Scott #PR124 [1895 Designs: $50 dull rose "Commerce", Watermarked] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF+ centering. Incredibly fresh with crisp, detailed engraving impression. (Scott 2022 $75.) While the title give by Scott for this subject is "Commerce" and the allegorical figure is appropriately holding a ship in her right hand, her left hand holds a Caduceus, the symbol of MEDICINE. This is perhaps an overlooked MEDICAL TOPIC stamp as well as a SHIP TOPIC stamp!

Scott #PR125 [1895 Designs: $100 purple Indian Maiden (per Scott), Watermarked] Mint hinged, with VF-XF centering. Incredibly fresh with brilliant color, white paper, perfect perforations, and crisp, proof-like engraving impression. (Scott 2022 $85 for VF-XF/85.) How is it possible that a stamp with a $100 face value -- which meant a lot more in the 1890s than it does today -- can today have a catalog value today of less than face value? This stamp is perhaps grossly underappreciated by the marketplace. In addition to this stamp being a Native American Topic and a Women (not "maiden") Topic, she is holding a bunch of GRAPES in her outstretched hand, thus also a Food and Beverage Topic.

Scott #RW4 [1937 $1 green Scaup Ducks] Used with VF centering. No signature, but has faint generalized text transfer from a license. No defects. Natural straight-edge and guideline on right side from one of the left panes. RW1-12 were printed in larger sheets that were divided by cutting along central vertical and horizontal guidelines into panes of 28 stamps, each pane consisting of four columns and seven rows. Ten stamps of each pane thus had natural straight edges on 10 stamps: 6 with SE on right OR left side, 3 with SE on top OR bottom, and one SE corner-cut stamp. Examples of straight-edge stamps showing the guideline are somewhat more unusual as the guideline usually ended on one side/stamp or the other of the cut. Due to reperforating by unethical sellers, examples still with their natural straight edge are now somewhat hard to find, especially in nice quality. I think that collecting straight-edge and guideline positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Quite attractive and with very low price. (Scott 2022 $65.)

Scott #300 [1903 1c blue green Franklin] Mint, moderately hinged, with F-VF centering. Natural left straight edge example. This is from the left margin of a right pane. This stamp was printed in sheets 400, divided into four panes of 100, 10 columns and 10 rows, with a horizontal and vertical guideline between the panes. Only 9 stamps out of every 100-pane had only the natural straight edge at the right (and same for at left, top, and bottom). Despite this respective 9% of production, of examples with any particular single straight edge, and especially those cut so that the full guideline is showing, are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge). I think that collecting the straight-edge and guideline positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless and/or because of all that, NH or Hinged examples with the straight edge on this fairly common stamp are surprisingly hard to find! Under magnification, this example shows an additional variety: a plate layout line ( not a pane division guideline) in the left margin. Such lines were to aid the siderographer, the person who transfers the impressions from the die to the plate, in placing the impression on the plate -- they were supposed to be burnished off, but this line is still faintly visible. An attractive example with two interesting varieties.

Scott #619 [1925 5c dark blue Lexington, Minuteman] Used with XF-Superb centering and very large, even margins. Neat, undated, double-oval (registry, parcel, or third class) cancellation, very appropriately of WALTHAM, MASS. Waltham is located about 5 miles south of Lexington. This cancellation is a terrific tie-in to the subject matter of the stamp. Natural straight edges on the left and top, which makes it the upper left stamp of the lower right pane of the press sheet. This three stamps of this issue were printed in sheets 200, divided by cutting (resulting in natural straight edges) into panes of 50, 5 columns and 10 rows, with a horizontal and vertical guidelines between the panes. The margins were large enough that the guidelines were often cut off during that process. Only 1 stamp out of every 50-pane had a corner cut position; and only 1 stamp out of every 200 had THIS corner cut position. With this respective half-of-one-percent of production, examples with corner-cut straight edges were always "scarce". Now they are quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections -- and many Used examples were discarded. Of those that remained extant, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge. I think that collecting the guideline and/or straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. This is a surprising "rare" position -- made tremendously more unusual by the wonderful centering AND the cancellation from a town "next door" to Lexington. An exceptional example, the rarity of such will be recognized by the astute philatelist. (While it is not directly applicable because of the straight edges, it is instructive to know that the Scott 2022 value for Used XF-Superb/95 is $145!)

Attractive at a very low price. (Scott 2022 $20.00.)

Scott #219 COLLECTION OF 9 COLORS [1890 1c blue / ultramarine Franklin] Used group of 9 stamps, all with VF or better centering, some are at least XF centered, in a wide range of shades of both BLUE and ULTRAMARINE. Most have cancellations that do not obscure the portrait. While this is a "common" stamp in Used condition, a nice and such large range of the colors is rarely offered. In addition to the blues and greenish blues, this group includes an ultramarine, deep ultramarine, and brilliant ultramarine (fairly unusual). Without spending a fortune, one could build a fascinating collection of this 132-year-old workhorse stamp and its uses! The price not only takes into account the range of colors, but that the 2022 Scott value is 75 cents for VF, but is $8 each for VF-XF and $30 each for XF!

Scott #219D [1890 2c LAKE Washington] Mint, moderately hinged, with F-VF centering. A very attractive example with a crisp engraving impression. The hinging location on this stamp indicates that it was once part of a block that hinging reinforced -- It is a lot nicer than typical examples. The color lake, a color I would describe as a violet-tinged carmine, is an unusual color that is often misunderstood or misidentified in regard to other stamp issues. Nice mint examples are hard to find. (Scott 2022 $160.00.)

Scott #220 "Carmine Lake" [1890 2c carmine Washington] Mint, regummed, with VF centering. An interesting looking stamp. The "lake-like" color of this example is quite distinctive, but it is much lighter than the #219D lake color. It could be that some aspect of the regumming process caused a color change, or perhaps this is just a lake-like dark carmine example. Regardless, it looks unusual! Even though regummed, nice-looking mint examples of this workhorse stamp, especially interesting color shades, can be hard to find.

Scott #222 Dark Brown [1890 4c brown Lincoln] NEVER HINGED with Fine centering, but with crease (looks very nice from the front). Natural left straight edge. This is a left margin position from the right pane. This stamp was printed in a sheet of 200 with fully perforated margins on the outer four sides. The sheet of 200 was then divided by cutting into two panes of 100 (left pane with straight edge on right side and right pane with straight edge on left side). Thus only 10 stamps out of 200 have the straight edge on the left side. It seems that many/most such examples have since been reperforated to remove the straight edge -- example with straight edge are not often offered. I think that collecting straight-edge and arrow positions of this issue is quite challenging and rewarding. (Scott 2022 $80 for a normal hinged example and $240 for a normal NH example.)

Scott #156 COLLECTION OF 9 COLORS [1873 1c ultramarine-blue shades Franklin, Continental with Secret Mark, Thinner/Harder Paper] Group of 9 stamps all with distinctly different colors. I believe that all of these are #156 (printed by Continental Bank Note Company) and not #182 (printed by American Bank Note Company); however per Scott Specialized Catalogue, there was some overlap during the transition between the companies. Regardless, the value is about the same for both. (All clearly show the secret mark, thus NOT #134 or #145.) Other than one stamp which is only Average centered (but is without doubt the "rarest" of the group), all are at least Fine, some F-VF, and some VF. Other than three with typical variable perforations, all are WITHOUT DEFECTS. The quality is much nicer than usually seen on these stamps -- these are the result of sorting the nicest color examples out of a large quantity of stamps. The colors range from five distinct shades/colors of ultramarine [top 2 rows of the website image] to four distinct shades/colors of blue [bottom row of the website image]. [Many people, especially males, have difficulty perceiving the differences between ultramarine and blue. It is easiest to say that the ultramarine colors do not include green in their mix, while the blue colors do include green elements.] The stand-out of this group is the BRILLIANT ULTRAMARINE -- I call it "RADIOACTIVE ULTRAMARINE" -- the left stamp on the middle row in the website image. I cannot recall ever seeing such a brilliant ultramarine color from this general time period in the entire world of philately. That stamp alone is likely worth quite a bit more than all other eight combined. While a generic example of #156 is a "common" stamp, this range of colors is quite uncommon. Scott #156 A "TYPE COLLECTION" OF 16 DIFFERENT POSTMARKS [1873 1c ultramarine-blue shades Franklin, Continental with Secret Mark, Thinner/Harder Paper] Group of 16 stamps, representing at least 8 or 9 different colors/shades, all with distinctly different types of postmarks. Of course this only scratches the surface of postmark possibilities, but it is an excellent example of the postmark collecting possibilities on this stamp. I believe that all of these are #156 (printed by Continental Bank Note Company) and not #182 (printed by American Bank Note Company); however per Scott Specialized Catalogue, there was some overlap during the transition between the companies. Regardless, the value is about the same for both. Most are at least Fine, some F-VF, and some VF or better. There are a couple with particularly nice postmarks that may have hidden defects, but almost all are without any defects. The quality is much nicer than usually seen on these stamps -- these are the result of sorting the nicest cancellation examples out of a large quantity of stamps. The postmarks in this group are all handstamped; 13 appear to be individually carved and thus may be unique designs; the other 3 are standard textual devices usually only used in the larger towns and cities at this point in time. Four postmarks are shades of blue; one of them is a manufactured duplex device (perhaps Cincinnati?) -- that one also happens to be on a stamp with a natural left straight edge (from the left column of the right pane in the printer sheet). Designs include: A wonderful 5-point star; a cogwheel, perhaps an "H", perhaps a reverse (i.e. in white) "M" or "W"; and various other designs. While a generic example of #156 is a "common" stamp, this range of postmarks (and colors) is uncommon. This could be the start of an interesting specialized collection of these workhorse One Cent stamps.

Scott #156 Grayish Ultramarine [1873 1c ultramarine-blue shades Franklin, Continental with Secret Mark, Thinner/Harder Paper] Extremely thin paper. Used JUMBO-SIZED stamp -- 4 mm taller than usual -- from the bottom row of the sheet, though with only Average centering. Extremely light cancellation, but one short perf and a previous owner handstamped the catalog number on the reverse (does not show through to front). Exceptional for its size and appearance.

Scott #156 Pale Ultramarine [1873 1c ultramarine-blue shades Franklin, Continental with Secret Mark, Thinner/Harder Paper] Extremely thin paper. Used with XF centering and great overall appearance, though one perf slightly toned. Natural right straight edge. This is right-margin stamp of the left pane. The Continental issues were printed in a sheet of 200 divided by cutting into two panes (left and right). I think that collecting straight-edge and arrow positions of this issue is quite challenging and rewarding.

Scott #145 [1870 1c ultramarine Franklin, National (no secret mark), No Grill] Mint with VF centering and great appearance, but expertly regummed. Appears to have a "gum thin" whereby removing a previous hinge has taken the (regumming) with it, but the paper fibers themselves are NOT thinned. Great color, excellent perforations, and very fresh appearance. A handsome example. (Scott 2022 is $240 without gum or regummed, compared to $650 with original gum.)

Natural left straight edge and with complete ARROW at bottom left This is the lower left position (91) of the right pane -- only one stamp out of 200! The National issues were printed in a sheet of 200 divided by cutting into two panes (left and right). The paper of this example is yellowed (aged) and also with further coloration from the oil in the cancellation ink -- however, such a position piece, especially with gigantic margins is very unusual! I think that collecting straight-edge and arrow positions is quite challenging and rewarding. (Scott 2022 $20 for ordinary examples.)

Scott #RW3 [1936 $1 brown black Canada Geese] NEVER HINGED with XF or better centering, but with the light bends typical on RW3. A couple tiny natural gum skips (to be expected per Scott). Natural straight edge on right (with hint of guideline) from one of the left panes. RW1-12 were printed in larger sheets that were divided by cutting along central guidelines into panes of 28 stamps, each pane consisting of four columns and seven rows. Ten stamps of each pane thus had natural straight edges on 10 stamps: 6 with SE on right or left side, 3 with SE on top or bottom, and one SE corner-cut stamp. Due to reperforating by unethical sellers, examples still with their natural straight edge are now somewhat hard to find, especially in nice quality. I think that collecting straight-edge and guideline positions is quite challenging and rewarding. This is quite an attractive example with a very crisp and detailed engraving impression and strong color. (Scott 2022 $325 for normal NH example and $150 for normal hinged example.)

Scott #367 [1909 2c carmine Lincoln, Perforated 12, Normal Paper] Used with VF-XF centering and large margins. Lower straight-edge / guideline example. This is a bottom row stamp from one of the upper panes. Due to fortunate cutting placement, the bottom guideline is showing. Note that usually only-Fine centering is "required" to show guidelines. The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, by cutting along the central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 stamps of 400 had a straight edge and guideline at the bottom (from upper panes) and another 18 at top (from lower panes). Four different corner positions, per 400 stamps, with corner-adjacent guidelines also exist. Despite the respective 4.5% of production, examples with a top or bottom straight-edge / guideline are now quite hard to find. I think that collecting guideline and straight-edges positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Examples with the straight-edges / guidelines are surprisingly hard to find, especially with such nice centering.

Scott #345 [1909 3c Washington, Type I, Imperforate, Double Line Watermark] NEVER HINGED with VF-XF centering and four ample to large margins. Top guideline example from one of the upper panes. This is from the top row of one of the lower panes. The printer sheets and panes of the 1-15 cent stamps of this issue all had the same format: The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, along central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 stamps of 400 had a guideline at the top (from lower panes) and another 18 at bottom (from upper panes). Four corner positions with corner-adjacent guidelines also exist. Despite this respective 4.5% of production, examples with a top or bottom guideline are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections). I think that collecting guideline (and straight-edges on perforated stamps) positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Scott #346 [1909 4c Washington, Imperforate, Double Line Watermark] Mint, very lightly hinged, with VF-XF appearance and large margins. Regardless of all that, examples with the guidelines are surprisingly hard to find. An attractive example. (Scott 2022 $15, not taking into account the scarcity of the guideline.)

Scott #344 [1908 TWO CENTS Washington, Imperforate, Double Line Watermark] VERTICAL PAIR WITH GUIDELINE BETWEEN, Mint NEVER HINGED, with VF centering and four ample to large margins. Horizontal guideline from between upper and lower panes. The printer sheets and panes of the 1-15 cent stamps of this issue all had the same format: The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, along central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 such pairs could exist from a sheet of 400 stamps, however in my experience very few VERTICAL PAIR with horizontal guideline must have been saved; such would have been saved from the full panes of 400 before they were broken up. I think that collecting guideline (and straight-edge on perforated stamps) positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, examples with the guidelines are surprisingly hard to find. An attractive example. (Scott 2022 $18.00, as two singles, for NH, not taking into account the scarcity of the guideline -- vertical pairs with guideline such as this are much scarcer.)

Scott #345 [1909 3c Washington, Type I, Imperforate, Double Line Watermark] Mint hinged, with VF centering and four ample margins, but light crease in upper right corner. Bottom guideline example from one of the upper panes. This is from the bottom row of one of the upper panes. Scott #343 Shermack Type III Vending Machine Perforation with Additional Perforated Punch Holes [1908 ONE CENT Franklin, Imperforate, Double Line Watermark] Used Fine single with Shermack III cuts only on right (the vending process cut off the left margin). Wide right margin is greater than 3mm, thus must be marginal example where sheets were pasted together. Has additional hole punch pattern "13579" [old system; identifies the holes NOT punched] used by J. L. Hawthorne Co. of New York City or according to the 1998 Perfin catalogue, Design 90-65, used by Julian Hawthorne of New York, N. Y. [Note that this category of punch hole patterns must be interpreted from the FRONT of the stamp. The hole pattern identifies the user of the stamps; holes were punched by an add-on unit on the affixing machine, at the option of the user; not all users did this.] The Scott Specialized value for the basic Shermack-cut stamp is nominal, but the 2022 value for the most common perforated punch hole version is $45!

Scott #9 [1852 1c blue Franklin, Imperforate, Type IV] Used (or perhaps Unused) with VF appearance. There is a tiny (10x magnifier required) dark mark on the nose of Franklin. I cannot be sure if the mark is a cancellation or just a tiny bit of soiling on an unused stamp. However, I must price this as canceled even though most people would think it is unused by the appearance. Huge margin at right; margin clear of the frame at top; and well clear of the frame at left (even though the margin angles in toward the bottom, it is still just clear of the design); and just in at bottom. Wonderful deep color, with bright and crisp impression, and unused appearance. (Scott Specialized 2022 value $100 for Used and $240 for Unused without gum.)

Scott #17 Black [1851 12c gray black Washington, Imperforate] The scarcer black color (instead of gray-black) listed by Scott. Used with VF appearance, but technically only F-VF. Large margin on right; the margins on the other three sides contact or cut the outer frame line, but are clear of the inner frame lines -- giving the appearance of having four clear margins. (The cliches were placed very close together in the plate, resulting in naturally small-margined stamps.) Black circular grid cancel containing several lines. Fairly stout, naturally yellowish paper -- I would not call it thick paper, but is definitely not thin. An attractive example of a stamp that is hard to find in nice quality. Scott #17 Black on Extremely Thin Paper [1851 12c gray black Washington, Imperforate] The scarcer black color (instead of gray-black) listed by Scott - this example almost seems to be slightly violet-black. Also, this is on extremely thin paper, which Scott lists. Used with F-VF appearance, but with large "flat" tear (i.e. within the plane of the paper, creating two overlapping flaps) as well as an ironed-out crease. The tear is not immediately obvious and at first just appears to be a tiny facial scrape visible between "TWELVE" and "CENTS". The iron-out crease is only found by close inspection. Large margin at left, ample at top, close/touching the outer frame line at right; and in at the bottom. (The cliches were placed very close together in the plate, resulting in naturally small-margined stamps.) Very light, neat black grid cancellation. While the defects do significantly reduce the value of this example, this extremely thin paper is so thin that it is amazing that the stamp has survived at all -- Scott seems to recognize this with a very high catalog value for the "very thin paper". An attractive example of a "rare" stamp that is seldom offered in any quality. Offered at a tiny percentage of catalog value! (Scott Specialized 2002 gray black value $260 and solid black $325, and with "very thin paper" $1750!!)

Scott #26 Dark Orange Red [1857 (red) 3c Washington, Perf 15.5, Type III] Mint, lightly hinged. with F-VF centering for this issue; margins well clear on two sides; nice for this stamp. NO defects. The gum may or may not be original; I was assuming it was regummed, but I discovered small hinge traces at locations which indicate that it had probably been separated from a larger block (which would suggest it has not been regummed). Furthermore, the brightness, freshness, and paper texture suggests the gum is original. The reddish color has a strong orange component which Scott does not recognize, but it is not the rare orange brown. I am pricing the stamp very low, but you may discover that it actually has original gum. Very nice and fresh looking for a 165 year old mint stamp! (Scott Specialized 2022 $65.)

Scott #324 SET OF TWO [1904 2c carmine Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Jefferson] Two stamps, two different color shades, Used F-VF, but one stamp with one missing perf. Set of two lower and upper horizontal guideline examples. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition printer sheets and panes all had the same format: The printer sheet of 100 was vertically divided, with a center straight edge, into left and right panes of 50. Because the top and bottom of the sheets/panes had selvage, there are no corner straight edge positions for this stamp. The printer sheet had a horizontal guideline between the 5th and 6th rows, as well as down the center along the straight edge. 8 stamps of 100 had a guideline at top and another 8 at bottom, with no straight edge at the side -- despite this 8% of production, examples with a top or bottom guideline are now quite hard to find. Note that normally these horizontal guideline examples have to be only F-VF centered (or less well centered) in order to clearly show the full guideline. VF or better centered stamps usually have the perforations through the guideline often making it hard to see. I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, Used examples showing the guideline on this common stamp are surprisingly hard to find!

Despite this respective 10% of production, examples with a right or left straight edge are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge). Scott #325 [1904 3c violet Louisiana Purchase, Exposition, James Monroe] Used with VF-XF centering, but with crease only visible from the back. Face-free cancellation. Upper horizontal guideline example. VF or better centered stamps usually have the perforations through the guideline often making it hard to see -- this example has a fully visible guideline. I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, Used examples showing the guideline on this common stamp are surprisingly hard to find! (Scott 2022 $27.50 for normal VF without a crease, but not taking into account the scarcity of the guideline.)

Scott #327 [1904 10c red brown Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Map] Used with VF centering. Natural left straight edge example. This is from the left side of the right pane. 10 stamps of 100 had a natural straight edge at the right (from the left pane) and another 10 at left (from the right pane). Despite this respective 10% of production, examples with a right or left straight edge are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge). I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, Used examples with the straight edge are surprisingly hard to find. An attractive example in very nice quality. (Scott 2022 $27.50 not taking into account the scarcity of the straight edge.)

Scott #311 [1903 $1 black Farragut] Used with XF-Superb centering, but with a tiny faint thin spot. With a neat cancellation that is virtually face-free on the portrait -- unusual for one of these high denomination stamps. Remarkably large margins -- nearly a jumbo sized examples. Unusually crisp and fresh engraving impression. This example has a guideline in the bottom margin (the $1 stamp did not have straight edges), from the bottom row of the upper 100-pane of the 200-subject printer sheet. Only 8 examples out of 200 (4%) of the stamps printed have this specific feature. I believe collecting such stamps (which have become scarce over time due to reperforating) could be a challenging and enjoyable endeavor. Such well-centered examples of this stamp are hard to find -- and even more so with a guideline. An outstanding looking example! (Scott 2022 $90 for VF; $215 for XF/90, and $550 for XF-Superb/95.)

Full height vertical crease through P of POSTAGE, likely with crack sealed by large hinge remnant. Large part original gum remains. Because Used is valued higher than mint for the green and greenish colors -- a manuscript cancel like this cannot be proven as Used -- I have priced this as if Mint. Very attractive and with very clear engraving impression. Priced correctly for the quality and cancellation.

Such straight edges were originally scarcer (the left and right were either each only 10% or 15% of the original issue quantity), however, it seems that the majority of them have long since been reperforated to make them look like perforated-4-side stamps. I think collecting the natural straight edges of the 1c-12c values of the 1869 issue would be a fun and challenging endeavor! Mint examples especially are now scarce with natural straight edges. Deep, rich color, with very clean and clear engraving impression with an unusual amount of detail -- a proof-like impression! (Scott 2022 $500.)

Scott #145 [1870 1c ultramarine Franklin, National (no secret mark), No Grill] Mint with VF centering and great appearance. I believe that this stamp has original gum, but the gum has been disturbed in the process of removing hinge remnants. However, it is also possible that it has been at least partially regummed, thus I have priced it as without gum or regummed. Terrific, delicate color, excellent perforations, and very fresh appearance. A handsome example. (Scott 2022 is $240 without gum or regummed, and $650 with original gum.)

Scott #336 [1909 6c orange Washington, Sheet Stamp, Watermark Double Line, Perf 12] Used with XF centering and JUMBO margins. Fairly neat town cancellation, probably (PHILA)DELPHI(A). Scott #157 [1873 2c brown Andrew Jackson, Continental Banknote printing, No Grill, With Secret Mark] Mint (NEVER HINGED) with full original gum but faint hint of a fingerprint on the gum. Fine+ centering. This is the brown color shade and has an extremely crisp and detailed engraving impression. The clear impression clearly shows (under 10x magnification) the seldom-visible secret mark (per Scott). Excellent perforations for this stamp. Though the stamp does not have a hinge mark, the faint fingerprint on the gum precludes it from being valued as a NH example -- however, note that in this early period Scott does not even attempt to list a price for NH. Scott #157a DOUBLE PAPER VARIETY [1873 2c brown Andrew Jackson, Continental Banknote printing, No Grill, With Secret Mark] Used with Average-Fine centering and very light cancellation, but with typical (for this fragile variety) quality problems: two small thins, and minor creasing. A previous owner has folded back the top layer at the lower right corner (as shown in the illustration) to demonstrate that the stamp paper is composed of two layers of extremely thin paper. While a U.S. classics specialist might have seen many of these over the years, this is the first example of this variety that I have had in 48 years. Despite the modest Scott value for Used, this is an extremely scarce stamp -- the value is probably suppressed by the quality problems typical for this stamp and the unusual nature of the variety (and because it does not have a space in any pre-printed stamp albums). An very reasonable example of a very scarce stamp! (Scott 2022 value $200.)
