Scott #RW5 [1938 $1 light violet Pintail Ducks] Mint, without gum, with Average centering, but minor crease in bottom margin. Scott #RW7 [1940 $1 sepia black Mallards] Used with neat signature and F-VF centering, but thinned. Natural straight edge on left from one of the right panes. RW1-12 were printed in larger sheets that were divided by cutting along central guidelines into panes of 28 stamps, each pane consisting of four columns and seven rows. Ten stamps of each pane thus had natural straight edges on 10 stamps: 6 with SE on right or left side, 3 with SE on top or bottom, and one SE corner-cut stamp. Due to reperforating by unethical sellers, examples still with their natural straight edge are now somewhat hard to find, especially in nice quality. I think that collecting straight-edge and guideline positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Quite attractive and with very low price. (Scott 2022 $50.)

Scott #RW10 [1943 $1 deep rose Wood Ducks] Used, but signed on the back instead of on the front -- still with full gum (actually never hinged, but the gum is slightly disturbed from a stamp mount). The centering is XF with large margins, but this example has the usual natural diagonal paper bends that are normally found on this particular issue. Though the stamp looks Mint from the front, it must be valued as Used. (Scott 2022 $35 as Used VF.)

Scott #367 [1909 2c carmine Lincoln, Perforated 12, Normal Paper] Used with VF-XF centering and large margins. Lower straight-edge / guideline example. This is a bottom row stamp from one of the upper panes. Due to fortunate cutting placement, the bottom guideline is showing. Note that usually only-Fine centering is "required" to show guidelines. The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, by cutting along the central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 stamps of 400 had a straight edge and guideline at the bottom (from upper panes) and another 18 at top (from lower panes). Four different corner positions, per 400 stamps, with corner-adjacent guidelines also exist. Despite the respective 4.5% of production, examples with a top or bottom straight-edge / guideline are now quite hard to find. I think that collecting guideline and straight-edges positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Examples with the straight-edges / guidelines are surprisingly hard to find, especially with such nice centering.

Scott #345 [1909 3c Washington, Type I, Imperforate, Double Line Watermark] NEVER HINGED with VF-XF centering and four ample to large margins. Top guideline example from one of the upper panes. This is from the top row of one of the lower panes. The printer sheets and panes of the 1-15 cent stamps of this issue all had the same format: The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, along central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 stamps of 400 had a guideline at the top (from lower panes) and another 18 at bottom (from upper panes). Four corner positions with corner-adjacent guidelines also exist. Despite this respective 4.5% of production, examples with a top or bottom guideline are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections). I think that collecting guideline (and straight-edges on perforated stamps) positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Scott #344 [1908 TWO CENTS Washington, Imperforate, Double Line Watermark] VERTICAL PAIR WITH GUIDELINE BETWEEN, Mint NEVER HINGED, with VF centering and four ample to large margins. Horizontal guideline from between upper and lower panes. The printer sheets and panes of the 1-15 cent stamps of this issue all had the same format: The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, along central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 such pairs could exist from a sheet of 400 stamps, however in my experience very few VERTICAL PAIR with horizontal guideline must have been saved; such would have been saved from the full panes of 400 before they were broken up. I think that collecting guideline (and straight-edge on perforated stamps) positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, examples with the guidelines are surprisingly hard to find. An attractive example. Scott #346 [1909 4c Washington, Imperforate, Double Line Watermark] NEVER HINGED, with VF centering and four ample margins. Bottom guideline example from one of the upper panes. This is from the bottom row of one of the upper panes. Scott #17 Black on Extremely Thin Paper [1851 12c gray black Washington, Imperforate] The scarcer black color (instead of gray-black) listed by Scott - this example almost seems to be slightly violet-black. Also, this is on extremely thin paper, which Scott lists. Used with F-VF appearance, but with large "flat" tear (i.e. within the plane of the paper, creating two overlapping flaps) as well as an ironed-out crease. The tear is not immediately obvious and at first just appears to be a tiny facial scrape visible between "TWELVE" and "CENTS". The iron-out crease is only found by close inspection. Large margin at left, ample at top, close/touching the outer frame line at right; and in at the bottom. (The cliches were placed very close together in the plate, resulting in naturally small-margined stamps.) Very light, neat black grid cancellation. While the defects do significantly reduce the value of this example, this extremely thin paper is so thin that it is amazing that the stamp has survived at all -- Scott seems to recognize this with a very high catalog value for the "very thin paper". An attractive example of a "rare" stamp that is seldom offered in any quality. Offered at a tiny percentage of catalog value! (Scott Specialized 2022 gray black value $260 and solid black $325, and with "very thin paper" $1750!!)

Scott #25 Rose Red [1857 3c (rose) Washington, Perf 15.5, Type I] Used with VF centering for this issue: large margin at left, frame lines visible top and bottom, and in at right. This stamp is quite scarce with nice centering: the Scott Catalogue states "25 is valued in the grade of Fine with perforations cutting or touching slightly on one or two sides." Scott #324 SET OF TWO [1904 2c carmine Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Jefferson] Two stamps, two different color shades, Used F-VF, but one stamp with one missing perf. Set of two lower and upper horizontal guideline examples. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition printer sheets and panes all had the same format: The printer sheet of 100 was vertically divided, with a center straight edge, into left and right panes of 50. Because the top and bottom of the sheets/panes had selvage, there are no corner straight edge positions for this stamp. The printer sheet had a horizontal guideline between the 5th and 6th rows, as well as down the center along the straight edge. 8 stamps of 100 had a guideline at top and another 8 at bottom, with no straight edge at the side -- despite this 8% of production, examples with a top or bottom guideline are now quite hard to find. Note that normally these horizontal guideline examples have to be only F-VF centered (or less well centered) in order to clearly show the full guideline. VF or better centered stamps usually have the perforations through the guideline often making it hard to see. I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, Used examples showing the guideline on this common stamp are surprisingly hard to find!

Scott #324 [1904 2c carmine Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Jefferson] Mint with Fine centering, moderately hinged. 10 stamps of 100 had a natural straight edge at the right (from the left pane) and another 10 at left (from the right pane). Despite this respective 10% of production, examples with a right or left straight edge are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge). I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, Mint examples with the straight edge on this common stamp are surprisingly hard to find!

Scott #113 [1869 2c brown Post Rider] Mint with F-VF+ centering, full original gum with reasonable hinge remnant. This example has a wide natural straight edge on the right side. Such straight edges were originally scarcer (the left and right were either each only 10% or 15% of the original issue quantity), however, it seems that the majority of them have long since been reperforated to make them look like perforated-4-side stamps. I think collecting the natural straight edges of the 1c-12c values of the 1869 issue would be a fun and challenging endeavor! Mint examples especially are now scarce with natural straight edges. Scott #297 [1901 5c ultramarine and black Pan-American, Niagara Bridge] Used with VF-XF centering and strong NEW YORK "H" horizontal oval killer postmark. (I guess that is why they call it a killer.) Natural top straight edge example clearly showing the horizontal guideline (cutting guideline), from the top row of the bottom pane. The Pan-American Exposition printer sheets and panes all had the same format: The printer sheets of 200 (10 x 20) were horizontally divided by cutting, along a horizontal guideline between the 10th and 11th rows, into upper and lower panes of 100. There are no corner straight edge positions for this issue, however there are corner (intersection) guideline positions. The printer sheet (and the panes) additionally had a vertical guideline between the 5th and 6th columns. 10 stamps of 200 had a natural straight edge at bottom (from the bottom row of the upper pane) and another 10 at top (from the top row of the lower pane). Many panes were cut with the horizontal guideline ending up entirely on one pane or the other, thus fewer stamps showing the horizontal guideline where produced than one might expect. Guideline-intersection examples, with the straight edge at top or bottom, are quite unusual, with each of the four possible intersection positions originally existing in only 1 out of 200 stamps. Both the horizontal and vertical guidelines terminated in the sheet margin with an arrow. Despite the respectively each 5% of production, examples with a bottom or top straight edge are now quite hard to find because most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge. I think that collecting the guideline and straight edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. This is a scarce position. (Scott 2025 $17 for the more common normal position.)

Scott #157a DOUBLE PAPER VARIETY [1873 2c brown Andrew Jackson, Continental Banknote printing, No Grill, With Secret Mark] Used with Average-Fine centering and very light cancellation, but with typical (for this fragile variety) quality problems: two small thins, and minor creasing. A previous owner has folded back the top layer at the lower right corner (as shown in the illustration) to demonstrate that the stamp paper is composed of two layers of extremely thin paper. While a U.S. classics specialist might have seen many of these over the years, this is the first example of this variety that I have had in 48 years. Despite the modest Scott value for Used, this is an extremely scarce stamp -- the value is probably suppressed by the quality problems typical for this stamp and the unusual nature of the variety (and because it does not have a space in any pre-printed stamp albums). An very reasonable example of a very scarce stamp! (Scott 2022 value $200.)

Scott #(78/78b) Bluish Gray [1866 24c "lilac" Washington, without grill] Used with VF centering and nice, large margins, but with thin spot. Unusually light target cancellation to one side, leaving Washington "face free". Though Scott does not list a bluish gray color, the R.H. White color "bible" of classic U.S. stamps does recognize the color. (Many worldwide classic lilac or violet stamps underwent color changes due to chemical reactions within the ink as it dried. A well-known example is Sweden Scott #15, originally printed in reddish violet, but which became gray overnight when the ink dried. The color of this particular example of #78/78b is almost identical to the final color of Sweden #15!) Scott #71 [1861 30c orange Franklin, without grill] Mint, expertly regummed, lightly hinged, with Average centering. Bright color and perfect perforations. A fresh and attractive example of an unused stamp that lost its gum -- examples still with gum are very scarce. No defects or problems other than the regumming. Despite the money somebody spent to add gum to this stamp, I value it as a no-gum example. (Scott 2022 $950 for no gum; for comparison, $2600 with original gum.)

Scott #112P3-122P3 [1869 1c-90c Pictorials] COMPLETE SET OF 10 (#112P3-117P3, 119P3-122P3) Plate Proofs on India Paper. XF appearance, all with vibrant colors and all with large to huge margins. [India paper plate proofs of #118, the 15c Type I, do not exist, thus this is the complete set of 10.] The 6c has an internal natural bend; the 24c has a couple "sand holes", pinholes caused by natural inclusions such as grains of sand in the paper that have since fallen out; the 90c has a natural translucent inclusion in the top margin. That range of minor problems is not unusual on these plate proofs. A beautiful set showing just how wonderful these stamp designs and engravers art were intended to look. A seldom offered set; the only such set I have had in 48 years. (Scott 2022 value $855.)

Scott #554 [1923 2c carmine, Flat Plate, Perf 11] Mint VF right margin 4-block with plate number 17312 and large 5-pointed star. For this plate number, the star only appeared in the right margin of the upper right pane (of the press sheet containing four panes). Reinforced with hinge, some separation. Very attractive with intense color. Normally collected in a plate block of six, but scarce enough that a 4-block is still desirable. Pristine example with brilliant color, but natural gum bend on left stamps resulting from a slight gumming skip. (Scott 2022 total value for four NH VF singles is $60). Scott #96 Deep Blue Green, Extremely Thin Paper [1867 10c green Washington, F-Grill] Used with Fine centering. Very distinct grill impression. Wonderfully deep color with perfect perforations. Such quality and perforations are especially scarce on such thin paper which is easily damaged. An extraordinarily sharp, proof-like, impression. Very scarce ILLEGAL USE AS A REVENUE STAMP: Deep Violet-Carmine manuscript cancellation "W. M. Dec 2 1869". While such uses are known, they are very scarce. It was illegal to use postage stamps to pay for revenue taxes/fees, just as it was illegal to use revenue stamps to pay for postage. To my knowledge, these uses are not listed in any catalog, but very interesting articles with many illustrations can be found at the excellent Richard Frajola website or the fascinating, must-see Revenue-Collector.com website. (Thank you to both of these devoted philatelists for sharing their extensive knowledge.) The Scott U.S. Specialized prices manuscript cancellations to about 1860, however, those are POSTAL cancellations, not revenue cancellations. The revenue use of classic postage stamps occurred mostly in the 1862-1872 period. Revenue-use cancellations will typically bear the taxpayers name or initials, along with a full date. On the other hand, postal manuscript cancellations are usually either just obliterations of some sort or are parts of town names, usually without a full date. Though some collectors scoff at manuscript cancellations, manuscript REVENUE cancellations are very scarce and deserve to be included in specialized collections. This example is remarkably attractive with terrific stamp color and sharply contrasting cancellation color. [Lest somebody think that such a cancellation could be added to an unused stamp, even a no-gum stamp lists for $825 in the Scott 2021 Specialized Catalogue.]

Scott #17 Black [1851 12c gray black Washington, Imperforate] The scarcer black color (instead of gray-black) listed by Scott. Mint, regummed (never hinged). Right sheet margin example, but no margins on other three sides (cut just at or inside frame lines). Possible tiny expert repair (it is sometimes difficult to be absolutely sure on a regummed stamp), but has sound appearance. I cannot detect any indication of faint cancellation or removed cancellation on this example (it can be very difficult on a black stamp). This appears to be an unused (no gum, then regummed) example. Offered without a certificate; returnable for full refund if a certificate from a recognized authority, obtained within one year of purchase, is contrary to this description, however the cost of such certificate is not refundable in this particular situation. (Scott 2021 Specialized VF No Gum values are $2100 for the gray black and $2500 for the black color.)

Right stamp has a facial tiny black spot near the A of POSTAGE, but is otherwise without any problems. Wonderfully fresh overall appearance with great color and correct gum. Mint multiples of these early issues have become quite scarce as they are broken up for sale as singles. (Scott Specialized 2021 value $280 as two singles or $300 as a pair.)

Scott #C2 [1918 16c green Jenny Biplane] Mint, very lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. Wonderfully fresh and attractive, with deep color! Left guideline example from the 6th vertical column of stamps in the sheet/pane.The first three airmail stamps, Scott #C1-3, were printed in sheets of 100 and were available at post offices in panes of 100. The plate layout is unusual (and different from C4-6). There is only a single plate number for the sheet, located above column 7; there is no plate number in the left margin. The top and left have perforated sheet margins. The right and bottom margins are not perforated; they have natural straight-edges usually very closely cut to the design of the stamps (no additional sheet margin). There is a vertical guideline between columns 5 and 6 and a horizontal guideline between rows 5 and 6. The guidelines terminate in a marginal arrow at the top and left side. Straight-edge positions quantities: 9 stamps out of every 100-pane had the natural straight edge only on the right; another 9 only on the bottom and 1 bottom right corner position. Guideline position stamps, depending upon their centering (location of perforations), may or may not share guidelines with the adjacent stamp. Intersection guideline examples (i.e. from a cross-line block) are seldom seen now. Examples with guidelines and especially examples with straight-edges, seem to be scarce, likely due to such stamps either being reperforated or, especially in the case of straight-edge stamps, not being saved by collectors at the time of issue. Examples with straight-edges or guidelines of this stamp were often discarded by early collectors before their significance and relative scarcity was understood. I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. (Scott 2024 $60 for normal, more common, examples.)

Scott #RW20 [1953 $2 deep rose brown Blue-winged Teal] Used Fine on reverse of "VIRGINIA COUNTY RESIDENT License To Hunt and Fish -- $1.00". Though the license has the usual "wallet creases", the duck stamp has not been creased! Virginia did not start using actual waterfowl hunting stamps until 1988; this license is the equivalent of a State stamp. (Virginia did have "bear and deer" hunting stamps this early.) While this Federal duck stamp is not scarce (Scott 2021 $15 for Used), it is quite hard to them on intact licenses in decent quality.

Wooten (2006) VIRGINIA Big Game (Bear and Deer) Hunting Stamp #31 [1953-54 $1 black on blue "Bear and Deer" Resident (pictures deer)] Used VF, with red serial number, on reverse of "VIRGINIA STATE RESIDENT LICENSE TO HUNT ONLY -- $3.50" for 1953-1954. Not being familiar with the Virginia system, I do not know why the license was $3.50 but the stamp only $1.00; I assume both amounts had to be paid. Though the license has the usual "wallet creases", the hunting stamp has only very minor creasing (since unfolded) of the perfs at top and left! The 2006 Wooten catalog prices this stamp Mint at $30 and Used at $12, but makes no effort to price uses on license (though the author notes in the 2006 introduction that collecting on license has "grown in popularity"). A very attractive, pictorial stamp design which greatly helps the marketability, thus the value. A very nice and very scarce-on-license item from the era well before the "philatelicization" of hunting stamps.

Scott #C4 [1923 8c green Jenny Propeller] Used with F-VF centering with bold #5 "killer" cancellation. Left straight-edge example from the left column of right pane in the printer sheet. (The guideline is not visible on this example.)The plate layout of Scott #C4-6 is different from C1-3. C4-6 were printed in sheets of 400 which were divided by cutting into panes of 100 for sale in post offices. (C1-3, were printed in sheets of 100.) Each of the four panes has a plate number in both the horizontal pane margin and in the vertical pane margin. The sheet images I have seen show only a vertical guideline line, terminated by a marginal arrow in the pane margin (either at the top or bottom, whichever margin is present) between the two left panes and the two right panes. (I would like to know if horizontal guidelines exist.) The panes were divided by cutting; the resulting natural straight edges are usually very closely cut to the design of the stamps (no additional sheet margin). Straight-edge positions quantities: 18 stamps out of every 100-pane had the natural straight edge only on the right; another 18 only on the left; plus the four corner positions where the panes intersect. Guideline position stamps, depending upon their centering (location of perforations), may or may not share guidelines with the adjacent stamp. An attractive example of a position that is surprisingly seldom offered. (Scott 2025 value is $15 for a more common normal position.)

A handsome example of an often-overlooked scarce stamp that is seldom seen in such nice condition. Accompanied by a 2021 Philatelic Foundation certificate that grades this example at XF/90. However, grading is an art not a science, and in my opinion this example is XF-Superb/95 and it might get that grading from another of the expertizing services. Scott #C3 [1918 24c carmine rose and blue Jenny Biplane] Mint with F-VF centering, but with hinge remnant and disturbed gum. Bottom AND Right guideline example from postion 45 in the pane; the 5th horizontal row and 5th vertical column of stamps in the sheet/pane.The first three airmail stamps, Scott #C1-3, were printed in sheets of 100 and were available at post offices in panes of 100. Straight-edge positions quantities: 9 stamps out of every 100-pane had the natural straight edge only on the right; another 9 only on the bottom; and 1 bottom right corner position. Guideline position stamps, depending upon their centering (location of perforations), may or may not share guidelines with the adjacent stamp. Intersection guideline examples (i.e. from a cross-line block) are seldom seen now; this position only originally occurred once per 100 stamps, but is much scarcer now.. (Scott 2025 value $65 for a normal, more common, example.)

Scott #1CVP106 VARIETY $5.00o "US POSTAGE CORRECTION" [2009 Stamps.com, Scott picture code CVPA73 variety] NH VF. This is a variety in two respects. This "CORRECTION" text/feature was a simplistic term for users who had already printed stamps prior to a postage rate change and then the user needed to print an additional value after a postage rate change to meet the new rate. However, a user could use this feature to print any value within the limits of the software. These particular stamps were printed by a user who mailed high-cost packages and who wanted the convenience of having high-value stamps available. The other variety aspect is that this Scott number was for the Stamps.com-supplied die-cut stamps with pre-printed frame, etc. However, per the introduction in Scott for this catalog section, the user could print on anything (blank paper, blank label stock, envelopes, etc.) that they could run through their printer. This example is printed on self-adhesive full-page imperforate (no die cutting) label stock. Each stamp in such a sheet is unique, with a different serial number extension (i.e. B08675.xx where xx is different on each stamp); this serial numbernig is also expressed by differences in the lower right corner of the the QR-type code. This item offered is a SINGLE imperforate stamp from a particular partial sheet (see website image) -- interesting strips or blocks from this partial sheet may be available pro-rata. Though such varieties are perhaps still too modern to be called scarce, they are rarely seen offered.

Scott #165 [1873 (1874) 30c gray black Alexander Hamilton, Continental Banknote printing] Mint, with VF centering. Accompanied by a 2002 Philatelic Foundation certificate that states "165 ... It is genuine previously hinged with redistributed part O.G. [original gum] over a light horizontal crease at bottom." The certificate image of the stamps shows a not-mentioned weakness of the lower right corner perforation; that tooth has since separated and thus the lower right corner is slightly rounded. The mentioned light crease is not visible from the front and is even difficult to see from the back. The appearance of the gum is slightly disturbed, but within the normal range of what sees on this issue. (If you wish to yourself obtain a new certificate, of course I guarantee the stamp to be as I have described it. If the new certificate gives a lower opinion, upon return to me of the stamp and the new certificate, I will provide a full refund and pay for the new certificate.) Scott #O24 [1873 90c vermillion Perry Interior Official, Thin Hard Paper (Continental)] Used with F-VF centering and light, face-free cancellation. The stamp is only described as F-VF instead of VF because the left margin is an oversized wing margin; had it been a normal-sized margin, the stamp would be graded as VF. Scott #C1 [1918 6c orange Jenny Biplane] Used with F-VF centering and wavy-lines cancellation. Top guideline example from the 6th horizontal row of stamps in the sheet/pane.The first three airmail stamps, Scott #C1-3, were printed in sheets of 100 and were available at post offices in panes of 100. Intersection guideline examples (i.e. from a cross-line block) are seldom seen now. Very attractive with nice color (without the usual oxidation) and perfect perforations. (Scott 2025 value $30 for a normal, more common, example.)

Scott #C3 [1918 24c carmine rose and blue Jenny Biplane] NEVER HINGED stamp with Average centering. Left sheet margin example, showing bottom half of the arrow, and with the guideline fully in the upper margin of the stamp, from row 6. Note that to show the line fully on the stamp, the stamp has to be centered low as this one is. Lightly hinged only in the sheet margin; stamp is NH. For plane position collectors, this example shows the plane perfectly centered. Brilliant color and wonderfully fresh. The first three airmail stamps, Scott #C1-3, were printed in sheets of 100 and were available at post offices in panes of 100. The plate layout is unusual (and different from C4-6). There is only a single plate number for the sheet, located above column 7; there is no plate number in the left margin. The top and left have perforated sheet margins. Scott #9 [1852 1c blue Franklin Type IV] Mint with partial gum, hinge remnant. Enormous margin at top, but in at right and bottom, and large incursion at left. Very slight bend and slight aging. Based on how I acquired this stamp, I suspect that it was lost in the back of a desk drawer for one hundred years or more before coming into the hands of a collector. Though the left margin leaves something to be desired, it is an example of how people had difficulty separating these imperforate stamps back in the early 1850s. J52 Carmine Lake [Postage Due 1914 1 cent Perf 10, Single-Line Watermark] NH F-VF 4-block, as fresh as the day it was printed. The color is intense and the engraving extremely crisp and proof-like. The Scott Specialized Catalogue refers to 2 vs 3 mm spacing; this is explained in the regular stamp listings after #330. On only some plates, the Bureau laid out the plate with greater (3 mm instead of 2 mm) width between stamps in the outer vertical columns of the sheet; this was done to combat paper shrinkage after printing when the damp paper dried. (The distance between rows was kept at 2 mm.) This block example shows an oversized 3.5 mm gap between the two columns of stamps! Scott 2020 lists this stamp at $80 for a hinged single, $220 for a NH single (thus $880 for four), and $360 for a hinged 4-block -- but Scott does not price a NH 4-block. A reasonable comprise NH 4-block catalog value is $1000. Wonderfully fresh and attractive!

Scott #1706-9 [1977 13c Pueblo Pottery, American Folk Art series] NH VF set of four singles with TAGGING VARIETY. Scott #118 [1869 15c brown and blue Landing of Columbus, Type I] Mint, regummed, Average-Fine centered, with small/tiny thins, gum soaks, and a few short perforations. The "gum soaks" are the result of the regumming soaking into the paper at the location of the thins. Despite that negative description, this is an attractive looking example of a stamp that is very scarce in any mint/unused condition. The Type I stamp is seldom offered in mint/unused condition! Scott #O47Sb, 1875 1c Black Post Office Official with INVERTED "SPECIMEN" overprint in carmine. VF appearance. Large margins with natural sheet-margin straight edge at right. Thin. Much rarer than the catalog value suggests! Another dealer, who I respect greatly and who specializes in this type of material, saw this and commented that it is extremely rare, much scarcer than the catalog value indicates, and that a thin is typical on these because of how some of them were utilized for specimen use (such as UPU distribution and placing into the specimen books in other countries). A RARITY! Scott 2021 value $2500, but in reality this inverted overprint is much scarcer than that value suggests! Accompanied by 2019 Philatelic Foundation certificate.
