Scott #RW7 [1940 $1 sepia black Mallards] Used with neat signature and F-VF centering, but thinned. Natural straight edge on left from one of the right panes. RW1-12 were printed in larger sheets that were divided by cutting along central guidelines into panes of 28 stamps, each pane consisting of four columns and seven rows. Ten stamps of each pane thus had natural straight edges on 10 stamps: 6 with SE on right or left side, 3 with SE on top or bottom, and one SE corner-cut stamp. Due to reperforating by unethical sellers, examples still with their natural straight edge are now somewhat hard to find, especially in nice quality. I think that collecting straight-edge and guideline positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Quite attractive and with very low price. (Scott 2022 $50.)

Scott #RW8 [1941 $1 brown carmine Ruddy Ducks] Mint (actually has never been hinged) with XF centering and large, even margins, but gum has been disturbed by moderate glazed spots from a stamp mount. The overall appearance and freshness is of a NH stamp, but it cannot be valued as NH. Wonderful appearance with great color and very crisp, detailed engraving impression. (Scott 2022 $95 for VF hinged and $120 XF/90 hinged.)

Though the stamp looks Mint from the front, it must be valued as Used. (Scott 2022 $35 as Used VF.)

This is a bottom row stamp from one of the upper panes. Due to fortunate cutting placement, the bottom guideline is showing. Note that usually only-Fine centering is "required" to show guidelines. The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, by cutting along the central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 stamps of 400 had a straight edge and guideline at the bottom (from upper panes) and another 18 at top (from lower panes). Four different corner positions, per 400 stamps, with corner-adjacent guidelines also exist. Despite the respective 4.5% of production, examples with a top or bottom straight-edge / guideline are now quite hard to find. I think that collecting guideline and straight-edges positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Examples with the straight-edges / guidelines are surprisingly hard to find, especially with such nice centering.

Great color with very crisp engraving impression. While this is an extremely common Used stamp in ordinary quality, examples this nice are seldom offered as demonstrated by the Scott 2022 graded values of $22.50 for XF/90 and $150 for XF-Superb/95. Scott #304 [1903 5c blue Lincoln] Used with XF-Superb centering and jumbo margins for this stamp, with neat cancellation, but couple perforations at top creased (requires magnification to see). Nearly perfectly centered with margins much larger than usual. While this is a common Used stamp in ordinary quality, examples this nicely centered are seldom offered as demonstrated by the Scott 2022 graded value of $225 for XF-Superb/95 (and $60 for XF/90), though the couple perforation teeth do affect the value despite the beautiful appearance.

This is from the top row of one of the lower panes. The printer sheets and panes of the 1-15 cent stamps of this issue all had the same format: The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, along central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 stamps of 400 had a guideline at the top (from lower panes) and another 18 at bottom (from upper panes). Four corner positions with corner-adjacent guidelines also exist. Despite this respective 4.5% of production, examples with a top or bottom guideline are now quite hard to find (most were used for postage rather than going into collections). The printer sheets and panes of the 1-15 cent stamps of this issue all had the same format: The printer sheet of 400 was vertically and horizontally divided, along central guidelines, into four panes of 100. 18 such pairs could exist from a sheet of 400 stamps, however in my experience very few VERTICAL PAIR with horizontal guideline must have been saved; such would have been saved from the full panes of 400 before they were broken up. I think that collecting guideline (and straight-edge on perforated stamps) positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, examples with the guidelines are surprisingly hard to find. An attractive example. (Scott 2022 $18.00, as two singles, for NH, not taking into account the scarcity of the guideline -- vertical pairs with guideline such as this are much scarcer.)

Hinged at top, plus large hinge (remnant) intentionally placed at middle to reinforce the center perforations (these pairs are typically fragile because of the perforation 12), some adhesions on gum from an album page, and tiny thin spot at very bottom. Scott #17 Black on Extremely Thin Paper [1851 12c gray black Washington, Imperforate] The scarcer black color (instead of gray-black) listed by Scott - this example almost seems to be slightly violet-black. Also, this is on extremely thin paper, which Scott lists. Used with F-VF appearance, but with large "flat" tear (i.e. within the plane of the paper, creating two overlapping flaps) as well as an ironed-out crease. The tear is not immediately obvious and at first just appears to be a tiny facial scrape visible between "TWELVE" and "CENTS". The iron-out crease is only found by close inspection. Large margin at left, ample at top, close/touching the outer frame line at right; and in at the bottom. (The cliches were placed very close together in the plate, resulting in naturally small-margined stamps.) Very light, neat black grid cancellation. While the defects do significantly reduce the value of this example, this extremely thin paper is so thin that it is amazing that the stamp has survived at all -- Scott seems to recognize this with a very high catalog value for the "very thin paper". An attractive example of a "rare" stamp that is seldom offered in any quality. Offered at a tiny percentage of catalog value! (Scott Specialized 2022 gray black value $260 and solid black $325, and with "very thin paper" $1750!!)

Scott #25 Rose Red [1857 3c (rose) Washington, Perf 15.5, Type I] Used with VF centering for this issue: large margin at left, frame lines visible top and bottom, and in at right. This stamp is quite scarce with nice centering: the Scott Catalogue states "25 is valued in the grade of Fine with perforations cutting or touching slightly on one or two sides." Neat, very light town cancellation. Great color and excellent perforations. An attractive example of a stamp that is missing from many collections (or if seemingly present, is often misidentified). This stamp is quite scarce with nice centering: the Scott Catalogue states "25 is valued in the grade of Fine with perforations cutting or touching slightly on one or two sides." Scott #324 SET OF TWO [1904 2c carmine Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Jefferson] Two stamps, two different color shades, Used F-VF, but one stamp with one missing perf. Set of two lower and upper horizontal guideline examples. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition printer sheets and panes all had the same format: The printer sheet of 100 was vertically divided, with a center straight edge, into left and right panes of 50. Because the top and bottom of the sheets/panes had selvage, there are no corner straight edge positions for this stamp. The printer sheet had a horizontal guideline between the 5th and 6th rows, as well as down the center along the straight edge. 8 stamps of 100 had a guideline at top and another 8 at bottom, with no straight edge at the side -- despite this 8% of production, examples with a top or bottom guideline are now quite hard to find. Note that normally these horizontal guideline examples have to be only F-VF centered (or less well centered) in order to clearly show the full guideline. VF or better centered stamps usually have the perforations through the guideline often making it hard to see. I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. Regardless of all that, Used examples showing the guideline on this common stamp are surprisingly hard to find!

Scott #297 [1901 5c ultramarine and black Pan-American, Niagara Bridge] Used with VF-XF centering and strong NEW YORK "H" horizontal oval killer postmark. (I guess that is why they call it a killer.) Natural top straight edge example clearly showing the horizontal guideline (cutting guideline), from the top row of the bottom pane. The Pan-American Exposition printer sheets and panes all had the same format: The printer sheets of 200 (10 x 20) were horizontally divided by cutting, along a horizontal guideline between the 10th and 11th rows, into upper and lower panes of 100. There are no corner straight edge positions for this issue, however there are corner (intersection) guideline positions. The printer sheet (and the panes) additionally had a vertical guideline between the 5th and 6th columns. 10 stamps of 200 had a natural straight edge at bottom (from the bottom row of the upper pane) and another 10 at top (from the top row of the lower pane). Many panes were cut with the horizontal guideline ending up entirely on one pane or the other, thus fewer stamps showing the horizontal guideline where produced than one might expect. Guideline-intersection examples, with the straight edge at top or bottom, are quite unusual, with each of the four possible intersection positions originally existing in only 1 out of 200 stamps. Both the horizontal and vertical guidelines terminated in the sheet margin with an arrow. Despite the respectively each 5% of production, examples with a bottom or top straight edge are now quite hard to find because most were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, in the last 50 years many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge. I think that collecting the guideline and straight edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. This is a scarce position. (Scott 2025 $17 for the more common normal position.)

Such quality and perforations are especially scarce on such thin paper which is easily damaged. An extraordinarily sharp, proof-like, impression. Very scarce ILLEGAL USE AS A REVENUE STAMP: Deep Violet-Carmine manuscript cancellation "W. M. Dec 2 1869". While such uses are known, they are very scarce. It was illegal to use postage stamps to pay for revenue taxes/fees, just as it was illegal to use revenue stamps to pay for postage. To my knowledge, these uses are not listed in any catalog, but very interesting articles with many illustrations can be found at the excellent Richard Frajola website or the fascinating, must-see Revenue-Collector.com website. (Thank you to both of these devoted philatelists for sharing their extensive knowledge.) The Scott U.S. Specialized prices manuscript cancellations to about 1860, however, those are POSTAL cancellations, not revenue cancellations. The revenue use of classic postage stamps occurred mostly in the 1862-1872 period. Revenue-use cancellations will typically bear the taxpayers name or initials, along with a full date. On the other hand, postal manuscript cancellations are usually either just obliterations of some sort or are parts of town names, usually without a full date. Though some collectors scoff at manuscript cancellations, manuscript REVENUE cancellations are very scarce and deserve to be included in specialized collections. This example is remarkably attractive with terrific stamp color and sharply contrasting cancellation color. [Lest somebody think that such a cancellation could be added to an unused stamp, even a no-gum stamp lists for $825 in the Scott 2021 Specialized Catalogue.]

However, grading is an art not a science, and in my opinion this example is XF-Superb/95 and it might get that grading from another of the expertizing services. Scott #1CVP106 VARIETY $5.00o "US POSTAGE CORRECTION" [2009 Stamps.com, Scott picture code CVPA73 variety] NH VF. This is a variety in two respects. This "CORRECTION" text/feature was a simplistic term for users who had already printed stamps prior to a postage rate change and then the user needed to print an additional value after a postage rate change to meet the new rate. However, a user could use this feature to print any value within the limits of the software. These particular stamps were printed by a user who mailed high-cost packages and who wanted the convenience of having high-value stamps available. The other variety aspect is that this Scott number was for the Stamps.com-supplied die-cut stamps with pre-printed frame, etc. However, per the introduction in Scott for this catalog section, the user could print on anything (blank paper, blank label stock, envelopes, etc.) that they could run through their printer. This example is printed on self-adhesive full-page imperforate (no die cutting) label stock. Each stamp in such a sheet is unique, with a different serial number extension (i.e. B08675.xx where xx is different on each stamp); this serial numbernig is also expressed by differences in the lower right corner of the the QR-type code. This item offered is a SINGLE imperforate stamp from a particular partial sheet (see website image) -- interesting strips or blocks from this partial sheet may be available pro-rata. Though such varieties are perhaps still too modern to be called scarce, they are rarely seen offered.

It is genuine previously hinged with redistributed part O.G. [original gum] over a light horizontal crease at bottom." The certificate image of the stamps shows a not-mentioned weakness of the lower right corner perforation; that tooth has since separated and thus the lower right corner is slightly rounded. The mentioned light crease is not visible from the front and is even difficult to see from the back. The appearance of the gum is slightly disturbed, but within the normal range of what sees on this issue. Based on how I acquired this stamp, I suspect that it was lost in the back of a desk drawer for one hundred years or more before coming into the hands of a collector. Though the left margin leaves something to be desired, it is an example of how people had difficulty separating these imperforate stamps back in the early 1850s. A reasonably priced example of an unused stamp that is 168 years old! (Scott 2021 value $725 for full gum and $225 for no gum.)

J52 Carmine Lake [Postage Due 1914 1 cent Perf 10, Single-Line Watermark] NH F-VF 4-block, as fresh as the day it was printed. The color is intense and the engraving extremely crisp and proof-like. The Scott Specialized Catalogue refers to 2 vs 3 mm spacing; this is explained in the regular stamp listings after #330. On only some plates, the Bureau laid out the plate with greater (3 mm instead of 2 mm) width between stamps in the outer vertical columns of the sheet; this was done to combat paper shrinkage after printing when the damp paper dried. (The distance between rows was kept at 2 mm.) This block example shows an oversized 3.5 mm gap between the two columns of stamps! Scott 2020 lists this stamp at $80 for a hinged single, $220 for a NH single (thus $880 for four), and $360 for a hinged 4-block -- but Scott does not price a NH 4-block. A reasonable comprise NH 4-block catalog value is $1000. Wonderfully fresh and attractive!

Scott #1706-9 [1977 13c Pueblo Pottery, American Folk Art series] NH VF set of four singles with TAGGING VARIETY. The tagging is shifted horizontally about 50% so there is a vertical untagged stripe through the middle of each stamp (they had been attached at one time). Shifted tagging is not so unusual -- and is nearly invisible without a short-wave UV light (this one IS visible in daylight if held at an oblique angle) -- but when it is this extreme, it is collectible if you enjoy such varieties.

Much rarer than the catalog value suggests! Another dealer, who I respect greatly and who specializes in this type of material, saw this and commented that it is extremely rare, much scarcer than the catalog value indicates, and that a thin is typical on these because of how some of them were utilized for specimen use (such as UPU distribution and placing into the specimen books in other countries). A RARITY! Scott 2021 value $2500, but in reality this inverted overprint is much scarcer than that value suggests! Accompanied by 2019 Philatelic Foundation certificate.
