Danish West Indies: Cancellations: Town Cancellations
DWI postmarks have been most recently cataloged and valued in the DAKA Dansk Vestindien Handbog 1997, of which I sometimes have used copies available (please inquire).

Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise indicated. These items and much more of all types of DWI cancellations are available for viewing on approval; please request approvals.

18, Facit 16a, Yellow-Brown and Greenish Blue [1901 4 Cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Normal Frame] Used horizontal PAIR with VF centering (right stamp with rounded corner perf) and nearly complete CHRISTIANSTED 6 July 1905 cancellation. On small piece with left stamp "marked off" by red crayon. This type of marking-off is usually seen when an invalid stamp has been used (such as an obsolete / demonetized stamp, foreign stamp, charity label, or a re-used stamp). In this case, the stamps were valid postage -- I can only guess that the marked-off stamp was considered excess (overpaid) and the postal clerk was "preserving" it for future use by marking it off. I do not recall previously seeing this type of situation from DWI or any country [I welcome further information]. Very attractive and interesting!

Christianssted - Double S  Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top
The Christiansted (Christianssted) Double-S postmark has only one type; it is in a sans-serif typestyle and thus can always be distinguished from Frederikssted Double-S which only exists in a serif typestyle.

There are two St. Jan DWI postmarks, both in serif typestyle. 26 mm, very rare. 22 mm, scarce. The 22 mm type is usually found on Frederik VIII stamps and sometimes on Cents postage due stamps; any other use is rare.

J1 Printing 1, AFA #P1.1, AFA Plate I (first printing) [1902 1 cent Postage Due] Used with XF centering and perfect perforations, but small thin spot in top margin. Neat, partial "ST. J(AN)" cancellation -- a very scarce postmark. AFA Plates I and II both have the "small dot over I of DIEN"; elsewhere all "small dot" stamps are often described as Plate I). This first printing (Plate I) is Dark Indigo Blue on Bright White Paper. (The second printing of this stamp, AFA Plate II, also with the dot, is Dark Grayish Blue on paper that is usually cream or grayish.) Most use of these stamps was on the back of envelopes, without cancellation; canceled examples are much scarcer than uncanceled (no gum). Only 10,000 of the 70,300 1 Cent stamps are from Printing 1, but the catalog values do not properly represent the scarcity. Furthermore, the catalog values do not properly reflect the value of ordinary postmarked examples ... the ST. JAN cancel is VERY scarce. Such attractive examples are hard to find.
