U.S. 2 cent Washington Perf 10, used 1919 with CHARLOTTE AMALIE SAINT THOMAS, V.I. duplex cancel with killer #1 on picture post card (b/w sunset scene) to Denmark. Appears to be Danish family correspondence; one does not see too much of this type of correspondence after the transfer to U.S. ownership.

U.S. 1 cent on ca.1920 picture post card with VF "SAINT THOMAS, V.I." FLAG machine cancellation. The card is an unusual type I have not previously seen from DWI/VI: sepia printed-photo scene of "St. Thomas. Town and hills." The message mentions that the writer is on board the U.S.S. Delaware.

Carried outside the mails: SET OF TWO March 21, 1925, covers to the same addressee (an attorney) each with 2 cent franking, and bearing identical New York postmarks. Both covers have clear Virgin Islands return addresses of commercial enterprises. Hand carried to New York, and there posted. Such carriage outside the mails is quite unusual by this time and this pair of covers is the first I can recall seeing that demonstrates such from DWI/VI in the 20th Century.

U.S. Scott #859 [1940 1 cent Washington Irving] on 1940 picture post card (Grand Hotel and view of Charlotte Amalie) with U.S. Naval ship cancellation "U.S.S. / HERNDON" with 3 bars and text "ST THOMAS / VIR ILS" between the bars. Genuine personal message from a sailor to family back home, NOT philatelic. The ship was DD-198, a Clemson-class destroyer, commissioned in 1920 and transferred to the Royal Navy as HMS Churchill on September 9, 1940. Herndon served in the United States Coast Guard from 1930-1934 as part of the Rum Patrol. She was recommissioned into the Navy on 4 December 1939. Following trials and shakedown, she reached Guantanamo Bay on 23 January 1940 to join the Caribbean Neutrality Patrol -- this card is from this period. In July-August, she operated out of the Panama Canal Zone on tactical and antisubmarine maneuvers. A different Herndon was commissioned in 1942.

"CHARLOTTE AMALIE, V.I. / Sub Base St. Thomas Br." 3-bar handstamp postmark with "FIRST DAY / COVER" between the bars on June 2, 1941 cover to the U.S., with philatelic cachet. This is the first day of use of the postmark, not the stamps. It seems that few people know that a principal U.S. interest in buying DWI from the Danish in 1917 was to prevent the Germans from getting it and building a submarine base. Then the U.S. built a submarine base there. This is the only official postal evidence that I have encountered that mentions the submarine base -- and in the WWII era at that!
