FAROE "(TH)ORSHAVN" 1902 F-VF bridge-style town cancel Daka #01.03 on ICELAND Scott #27 [1897 16 aur Numeral, Perforation 12.75]. A wonderful early example, most likely from Icelandic "fishing boat mail" that was dropped off at the post office in Thorshavn, Faroe Islands. Icelandic-flagged fishing boats were to use Icelandic stamps on mail posted on the high seas. Sometimes, instead traveling all the way from Iceland to Denmark or the United Kingdom, Icelandic fishing boats stopped at the Faroes to obtain supplies and drop off mail. The stamps on such letters were thus postmarked at Thorshavn. The mail, if not actually intended for the Faroes, was then typically carried by other ships onward to Denmark or the UK. The 16 aur denomination correctly paid a special basic-letter (up to 3 kvint; 1 kvint = 5 grams) postage rate specifically for mail to either the Faroes or to Denmark (1 Aug 1876 thru 31 Dec 1907). This 16 aur stamp is VF centered, without any defects. It is a "scarce" Used stamp in its own right; a normal Used VF example, canceled in Iceland would sell for $89! Examples of this stamp canceled in the Faroes are very seldom encountered, particularly showing the year date and particularly not on such a nice example of the stamp. It is hard to find nice examples of this FAROE postmark on Icelandic stamps. This fits perfectly into either a Faroe collection or an Iceland collection. ACTUAL item. |

Scott #2 Type I, Facit #4I, AFA #2A, Daka GF10 2017 #4 [2 May 1941 (1st Printing) 20 øre overprint on 1 øre Wavy-Line Numeral] NEVER HINGED with Fine centering. Very fresh and bright. The Type I overprint was issued 2 May 1941 (the second printing was issued 28 May 1941). Type I has 12 mm spacing between the 20s, measured from right side to right side of the "0" numerals in the overprint (Type II has 13 mm spacing). The Type II stamps are scarcer. Completely NH and absolutely no defects, but offered at a very low price because of the centering. For comparison, Type I NH VF would be $70! ACTUAL item. |
