1919 Perforated Bisect on Cover [(1919) Perforated 14x 14.5 Watermark Crosses 4 øre BISECT] Used VF+ upper right corner BISECT, with usual 5 øre Christian X stamp, on full envelope with neat THORSHAVN 13 January 1919 cancellation. Though use of the bisects was authorized 3-31 January, the vast majority were used in the 3-13 January period, only 10 days -- this is from that 10-day normal-use period. Appears to be non-philatelic use, which is particularly unusual. Approximately 1600 bisects were made, however, I doubt that more than 400 complete covers still survive; and most do not look this nice! Accompanied by Jay Smith photo certificate with lifetime guarantee.

1919 7 øre Orange Christian X -- Used Following Faroe Scott #1. Faroe #1, the locally applied 2 øre surcharge on 5 øre stamps, came into being because local postage rates changed from 5 to 7 øre before supplies of the newly issued 7 øre stamp could reach the Faroes. The surcharged Faroe #1 stamps were to be used along an unsurcharged 5 øre stamp to make the new 7 øre rate. It seems that most Faroe #1 covers/stamps were saved. However, as soon as the 7 øre stamps arrived on 24 January, people stopped saving covers because they were now “ordinary”. Very few such covers, bearing the 7 øre stamp, have survived; for example only two covers are known canceled between 24 January and the end of February. The rate changed again (to 10 øre) on 15 October, thus this 7 øre stamp had a limited life for the local rate. Any example properly canceled, even a used single or on piece, is extremely scarce and sells for hundreds of dollars. Covers are rare. This cover was used by a business (advertising on reverse) on 6 May 1919 from Thorshavn to Sand (which was local). The envelope is cut down at top, but that is insignificant given the rarity. This cover was last on the market in 1992 and sold then for $1520. Accompanied by Eric von Wowern certificate, the famous Faroe expert.

1941 10 øre FRANCO BETALT -- Postage Paid handstamp used to supplement the Faroe #2-6 surcharges. In addition to surcharging the stamps that became Faroe #2-6, the Faroe post office had "postage paid" handstamps locally made in 5, 10, and 20 øre denominations. These handstamps were applied to unfranked mail brought to the postal counters, usually when there was a quantity of mail. The town postmark was struck along side. (For increased flexibility, the denomination was removed from a couple of the handstamps.) Use of the 10 øre handstamp in Thorshavn ran 10 May through 10 June 1941. Because these did not "look like stamps" and because they were most often used on business mail and printed matter, they were apparently usually discarded and rather few examples were saved. This is a 30 May use on an extremely attractive commercial cover. Such nice examples are very scarce. Accompanied by Jay Smith photo certificate with lifetime guarantee.

Scott #1 [1919 2 øre overprint on 5 øre Christian X] Used F-VF on typical small piece with full, perfectly centered, TRANGISVAAG 19 January 1919 cancellation. An excellent example, seldom seen canceled outside of Thorshavn (the catalogs state a 30-50% premium for cancels outside of Thorshavn) as very few of the stamps were distributed to other post offices (instead such letters were sometimes paid, but sent to Thorshavn for application of the stamp and canceling). Furthermore, cancels were rarely center-struck because an additional 5 øre stamp was usually next to them. A handsome example. Accompanied by Royal Philatelic Society (London) photo certificate and Jay Smith photo certificate with lifetime guarantee.

2 Surcharge Type II [20 on 1 øre WWII Provisional Surcharge, Type II issued 28 May 1941] Mint F-VF example, extremely lightly hinged. In terms of relative rarity compared to the Type I surcharge of the same denomination, this is by far the scarcest of the three Type II surcharges. Very attractive and seldom offered.

3 [20 on 5 øre WWII Provisional Surcharge] Used VF on piece with THORSHAVN pictorial codfish cancellation (translates to "Eat Faroese Codfish"). This example is interesting because when viewed under 10x magnification, the surcharge appears to be slightly doubled in the way that the Type II surcharges appear, but they only exist on #2, 5, and 6, at least that is what we have long believed to be the case.

65 Olive COLOR ERROR [1981 10 oyru Rune Stone] NH VF single in Yellowish Olive Green instead of the normal Gray Green. Our late friend and Faroe modern-issues expert Art Quarles, who had many personal contacts inside the Faroe post office, was "absolutely sure" that this color difference existed when the Faroe post office received their supply from the stamp printer and that it was not a color changeling. I last had a few examples of this error back in 2007 and all very quickly sold for $250 each. I now have only four more examples.
