The Karelian 1922 issue has been heavily forged, however, the genuine stamps are easily identifiable. I only sell 1922 Issue Karelian stamps and covers that have been properly examined. I do not consider it necessary that collectors incur the cost of certificates for these issues, if they are purchased from a knowledgable specialist. However, in my experience, a large proportion of the 1922 Issue stamps offered by non-specialists or through general auctions and especially Internet auctions, are not genuine. Caution is advised.

1-8 [5p-1m] eight values on 3 February 1922 REGISTERED cover with VIOLET UHTUA cancellations, to Helsinki, with 17 March backstamp. Additional Finnish 2 mk stamp on reverse, canceled SUOMUSSALMI (border mail exchange location) 13 March and Suomussalmi registry label affixed, needed since the Karelian stamps were not recognized in Finland. 3 February is the last normal day of use. Since the stamps were only used for four (or perhaps six) days before Uhtua fell to the Russians, such covers are rarely offered. The stamps and cancellations are genuine. The violet cancellation is extremely scarce. The stamps alone sell for about $500!

2, 4, 7 [10p, 25p, 75p] three values on 31 January 1922 FIRST DAY COVER with UHTUA cancellations, to Suomussalmi, with 13 February backstamp. Apparently no additional Finnish postage was needed because the cover only went as far as the Suomussalmi border mail exchange location. Since the stamps were only used for four (or perhaps six) days before Uhtua fell to the Russians, such covers are rarely offered. The stamps and cancellations are genuine.

2-11 [10p-5m] ten values on 31 January 1922 FIRST DAY COVER with UHTUA cancellations, to Kuusankoski, with 20 February backstamp. No additional Finnish postage was added. Since the stamps were only used for four (or perhaps six) days before Uhtua fell to the Russians, such covers are rarely offered. The stamps and cancellations are genuine. The denominations above 1 mark are extremely scarce on cover; I do not remember previously having any examples on cover in 38 years. The used stamps alone would sell for about $960 off cover!
