Royal Palace Official Postal Christmas Card. The design was later used in 1980 for a lithographed art image on a Monaco aerogram; it is also known in the form of a frameable art engraving. The date of engraving, or first printing, or of the first use of this official postal Christmas card is not known to me, however, I believe it to be from the mid-1970s. I had not (prior to 2015) recorded having any examples of the Christmas Card, though I may have had one or two that I failed to record. This is the first example that I have formally recorded. It is accompanied by the original 1977 mailing envelope to Ernest A. Kehr, a well-known (now deceased) American philatelic journalist. This example is a card that is folded to 183 x 128 mm, with the Slania engraving on the front in an area that is slightly inset/depressed. The second and fourth sides are blank. The third side has text in the center (typographed, not engraved) "Meilleurs Voeux" and in the lower right corner "Principaute de Monaco / Office de Emissions de Timbres-Poste". The front (engraved) is printed in black with a bluish tinge. Page three is typographed in black. The paper is yellowish white with a small watermark that appears to read in script "Arrches", but is probably "Arches" a famous old French art paper maker. The watermark appears to be positioned only occasionally in the larger sheet of paper, thus I suspect that some/many examples do not include the watermark. While such an item, used as a Christmas card, cannot reasonably be called "rare", many/most were probably discarded (the recipients not realizing their importance or that the front image was engraved by Slania); they are certainly "scarce".

1985 Stamp Centenary Souvenir Card / Deluxe Proof. Scott #1500 Souvenir Card / Deluxe Proof for the Centenary of Monaco Stamps. The same central design issued as a normal perforated souvenir sheet, Scott #1500; an imperforate version on normal stamp paper also exists. However, this has an added line of engraved text in green at bottom right, "IMPRIMERIE des TIMBRES-POSTE _ FRANCE", and is printed on a white, heavier, ungummed card stock similar to that used for other Monaco souvenir cards. It is without watermark (some other souvenir card issues exist both with and without watermark, thus it is possible that a watermarked version of this may eventually be discovered). The text at the bottom includes the word "FRANCE" because Monaco stamps have been (perhaps with a few exceptions) printed by the French post office stamp printing works. I suspect that this item may have been a "gift" from the French printing works to the Monaco post office, but that is just conjecture. The printer imprint is typical of how the French printing works labels their so-called "deluxe proofs". The engraved impression on this special paper (which I believe was specifically used for proof impressions) is deep and rich, with tremendous detail and vibrant colors. My source for these, a long-time client and Slania collector, stated the he obtained them "way back" and that his source only referred to them "deluxe proofs". My understanding is that the collector had sold or traded away a very few (perhaps 5-10) over the years, but that he had never seen any other examples beyond his original acquisition. One thing is quite clear about this beautiful item: It is very scarce if so few -- just this one group -- have come to my attention in the 37 years since they were issued! My entire supply consists of only 15 examples -- and I have no expectation that I will ever be able to find any further examples. This is a "NEW SLANIA DISCOVERY" at least for me. I have to be very careful when I say "new discovery" because surely somebody, somewhere in the world, knew about this item. About 20 years ago I had heard a rumor that this item may exist, but to the best of my recollection, I had never seen an example until now. I cannot find any mention of this item in the literature or websites that I have checked. So, I can at least say this is a new item to me! I am surely going to regret offering these so inexpensively!

2004 Portraits of Princess Grace, Black/Redprint Souvenir Card. 2349/2367 Blackprint MonacoPhil 2004 Souvenir Card. The upper part of the card has the same design as Scott #2349 and 2367 but in red and black, while below are the signatures of the four engravers (Albuisson, SLANIA, Mörck, and Catelin). The entire design, including the signatures, is engraved. The paper is thick, ungummed, and the upper area slightly inset. This card is extremely scarce, though issued in 2004 and despite a lot of searching, I had not been able to acquire example until 2011! The card was included with the "catalog" for MonacoPhil 2004 stamp show, an extravaganza of philatelic rarities. [The 192 page, large format, full color, velvet-covered hardbound book is offered separately for $25 plus shipping (quite inexpensive; it must have cost nearly $100 each to produce) as not all Slania collectors may want a copy of the book or pay shipping for it. The book includes an Ultramarine and Red (instead of Black and Red) picture of this souvenir card, as well as dozens of color pictures of many of the greatest philatelic rarities. Please specifically ask for the book (item #731840) if you wish to have it.]
