Scott #22 (but design similar to #29-30) Essay in Blue on medium-thick, ungummed, unwatermarked, very white, 37 x 51 mm paper. The 1 and 5 Cent Arms stamps were the first issued and have only TWO rings around the large numbers; the later-issued 2 and 8 Cent stamps have THREE rings around the large numbers. It is believed that this essay was made from an altered 5 Cent die in the early stages of preparation for the 2 and 8 Cent designs. Not listed by AFA 2002 Specialized, but is listed and described, but not valued, in DWI Mails. A stunning and important essay of considerable rarity.

1904 Christian IX 5 Cents essay in OLIVE GRAY. Believed to be the work of Alfred Jacobsen and probably completed in 1904. Imperforate on cream colored, gummed, unwatermarked paper with huge margins. VF quality in all respects, very lightly hinged. An excellent example. According to my records, this is only the second example of this color that I have had in 48 years and this color, at least by this naming is NOT listed in DWI Mails.
