The "Official National" Christmas Seals of Iceland are issued by the Thorvaldsen Society. I also stock the Christmas seals of all other Icelandic issuers, including regional issuers, Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, Scouting, etc., as well as blocks, sheets, imperforates, proofs, etc. from all issuers. All Icelandic Christmas Seals (and those of all the other Scandinavian countries) are available on approval. If you have specific topical/thematic interests, please let me know.
The local, regional, and other Christmas Seals are listed starting here.
The National (Thorvaldsen Society) seals for the years 1913-1918 and 1920 all have straight edges on one or two sides. Unless otherwise stated (hover mouse pointer over the image) the images are of a random straight edge position. If you desire a specific straight edge position, please send your want list.
1947 Christmas Seal Details: The 1947 seal exists in (at least) four importantly different versions. Most of this information is not shown in any of the Christmas Seal catalog listings that I am aware of. If this information has been published elsewhere, I am not aware of it and I welcome seeing any such published information.
1947 COLORS: The catalogs usually only state two colors (blue and gold), but there are FOUR colors: BLUE and GOLD, with a YELLOW or ORANGE underprint under the gold, plus a BLACK date printed in a separate operation. All elements are printed by typography. There are two distinctly different underprint (under the gold) colors -- this is NOT a matter of "color shade". It is clearly yellow vs orange. The orange underprint results in a richer-looking gold color. The yellow vs orange is known and recorded difference (for example, in the AFA Christmas Seal Catalog). NOTE: The GOLD ink is a metallic ink which can result in strange color effects when photographed or flat-bed scanned. The yellow underprint examples tend to look greenish and the orange underprint examples tend to look brownish. NOTE: The underprint color can be hard to see and often requires a 10x magnifier.
It should be pointed out that the year date "1947" is printed in black and was not part of the original design. There must be a story behind this. Either somebody forgot to include the date OR perhaps there was a thought about making a multi-year design which would be imprinted with a different year date each year. I do not know, but it would be interesting to find out what happened.
1947 PERFORATIONS: *NEW DISCOVERY* To the best of my knowledge (and memory), the fact that there differing perforations exist on the 1947 issue has not been recorded in the literature. Surely a few collectors must have noticed, but if so, I have not (or do not remember) encountered such details.
YELLOW UNDERPRINT:
Perforation 11.75 x 11 (previously called 12 x 11)
This is one of the more often seen
Perforation 11 x 11
This is a scarce variation. I have only recorded having one example, which I discovered ca. September 2020.
Perforation 11 x 11.75
This is a scarce variation. I have only recorded having one example, which I discovered in September 2025.
ORANGE UNDERPRINT:
Perforation 11 x 11
I have only recorded this perforation on this color. The orange underprint stamps are much scarcer than the yellow.
