80 SMALL PEARL FLAW Position 69, AFA #61æ [1912 35 surcharge on 20 øre Bicolor] Used F-VF+ with a clear example of the "small pearl flaw" variety. This example is defined by Lasse Nielsen as Pearl Flaw B37 which occurs in Position 69 of the underlying 20 øre stamp Print 7; the overprinting was only done on Print 7 stamps. The cancel is neat and light, allowing the variety to be seen. (This general postmark type was in use at the time, but this example is not year dated.) Wonderful, fresh and bright example of a seldom seen variety. AFA 2008 Specialized value DKK 1000 = $185 [12/2011] which is a very small premium over the normal-stamp value of DKK 600!

22 [1870 4 skilling Bicolor, Line Perforation 12.5] Mint F-VF / VF BLOCK OF FOUR. Extremely lightly hinged; just a single extremely light mark at the center of the block. Right two stamps are VF, left two are F-VF. The perforations are strong. Lower right stamp has a minor tone spot on one perforation (some people would probably not mention it). A classic multiple with wonderfully fresh appearance. Accompanied by 1974 S. Grønlund photo certificate and 2011 Jay Smith photo certificate with lifetime guarantee. 2012 AFA Catalog value for the four singles is DKK 4800 = $950, and the AFA 2012 prices the block at DKK 8000 = $1600! Even as singles, this stamp is undervalued by the catalogs; it is resident on almost all the want lists I see.

O4 [1871 4 skilling Official PERFORATION 12.5] Used F-VF centered, lightly canceled, however with perforations partially clipped at right and bottom. While the clipped perforations are a defect, it is not uncommon to see them on this stamp -- it seems that government office workers were too lazy to tear stamps at the perforations. This is one of the scarcest Danish stamps (only #21 is on more want lists). A very pretty and reasonably priced example.

O4 [1871 4 skilling Official PERFORATION 12.5] Used F-VF centered, on small piece, however with perforations clipped at bottom. The cancellation is "LØGTN" Esrom-type (precursor to the star cancellations) postmark from Løgten Kro. Esrom-type cancellations are scarce on any of the skilling-denomination stamps, however, they are much scarcer on official stamps; the Esrom-type cancellations were used at tiny places that handled very little official mail. While the clipped perforations are a defect, it is not uncommon to see them on this stamp -- it seems that government office workers were too lazy to tear stamps at the perforations. The presence of the LØGTN postmark makes this scarce stamp an extremely scarce example. This is one of the scarcest Danish stamps (only #21 is on more want lists). A very pretty and reasonably priced example.

The two stamps in the center row (which is row six of the sheet, confirmed by the marginal dot between the first two rows) are both the "Wide E" variety (all of row six has this variety) listed by AFA as #TJ16x and Facit #TJ23v. Very fresh and attractive position piece. AFA 2011 value just as the six stamps is DKK 2080 = $416 [9/2011] without the approximate 40% premium for the block! Wonderfully fresh and attractive.

NUMERAL CANCELLATION #53 (Randers, Type 1). This stamp is not normally found with numeral cancellations and is even scarcer with such cancels from the smaller cities. This 53-1 postmark was put into use approximately 1 December 1852, well after the March 1852 introduction of the Thiele printings (Scott #2). While several catalogs and handbooks price numeral cancellations on the usual FIRE RBS (Scott #2), none that I know specifically price their much, much scarcer use on the Ferslew printings (Scott #2a). Very attractive example!

Very attractive, with natural roulettes (i.e. not clipped off), wonderful rich color, and a #1 numeral cancellation that is a bit lighter than usual. An unusually nice example of a very scarce stamp. 1a (Facit #1I AFA #2a) [1851 2 RBS Greenish Blue, Ferslew Printing] Used Superb appearing with what looks like four huge margins. However, the margin on the left side has been expertly repaired/added (and thus the postmark in the margin has been painted in). All other aspects of the stamp are genuine. Neat #1 numeral cancellation which is unusual on this 1851 printing (normally adds 20% to the value, but in this case, it does not increase the cost at all). Despite the repair, this is a handsome example at a remarkably low price. AFA 2011 value for a normal 4-margin example is DKK 20,000 = US$3600, plus a premium for the numeral cancel. An extremely important consideration when valuing this stamp is that the repaired left margin could be simply removed (cut off), resulting in a perfectly normal and unrepaired 3-margin example that would command the price for a normal 3-margin example! Thus this stamp must be thought of and valued as a 3-margin example. Accompanied by a Jay Smith photo certificate with lifetime guarantee. [If the buyer wishes, the left side can be removed and the certificate re-issued, at no extra charge.]

The "bomb" variety is a diagonal line in the sky to the right of the tower, just below the top rim. The tower bears a Hebrew inscription which causes this basic stamp to also be sought after by Judaica collectors. This must be the nicest looking used example of this variety I have had in 37 years.

Appears to have been last sold in 1993 in a Christies auction where it was described as being from "the unique quarter sheet discovered by F.T.N. Caröe". Accompanied by Lasse Nielsen certificate stating "very fine item". An extremely scarce stamp as a single in Mint hinged condition and RARE as either a block or a single in NH condition. Value as singles: Facit 2007 SEK 36,000 = $5000. AFA 2007 DKK 34,500 = $5700. This block certainly has a break-up value of more than my price. This block is a showpiece with excellent investment potential as the value is supported by the four stamps which are constantly sought after by every serious collector of Danish stamps.
