Sepia-printed-photo mint picture post card showing a view from Norderøerne (North Island) with cattle on a steep hillside. (Cards picturing cattle are unusual; sheep are more typical.) Printed by E and S of København, with the statement "Sælges til Fordel for Fonden til Hjælp for Døvstumme" (Sold for the benefit of the Fund to Help the Deaf and Dumb [hearing impaired and non-speaking].) While I am not a post card specialist, I have not before seen any Danish or Faroese cards for this organization. The printing style of the card suggests that it dates from the last 1930s to the early 1950s.

Set of 2: Modern, color, printed-photo mint picture post cards, published in 2002, of the Faroe-based ship MV SMYRIL at Torshavn, carrying mail, passengers, and freight on the Torshavn-Suðuroy Faroe route. Card #8 published by the Faroe Islands Study Circle. Two identical cards, one completely mint and the other unaddressed, but franked with Scott #355 [1999 13 kr MV Smyril] canceled at TVØROYRI in 2005, SIGNED by the ship master (I cannot quite make out the name). The stamp pictures the 4th Smyril as of 1975 when the 4th hull by that name came into service. The card does picture the same hull, but after alteration sometime in or after the 1980s -- thus the stamp and card look a little different. The 4th Smyril was retired in 2005 and replaced by the 5th hull by this name on 15 October 2005; the 5th Smyril was significantly larger, requiring building a new harbor area. The 5th Smyril has a similar hull line to the altered 4th Smyril, but the superstructure is much different. The cancellation date is 31 October 2005, a couple weeks after the 5th Smyril went into service. The pair of cards would make a great album page. [Note that the stamp itself is a bit scarcer, with used selling for around $5.]

F43 [ca.1935 50 øre brown] Used VF upper left corner single (this issue had straight-edge sheet edges) with a typical minor crease ON A CARD (bill of lading) for carriage of 12.5 kg of saft (juice). Carried aboard the ship Dugvan, from ??? to Eide (Ejde). In 40 years, I have only seen a couple examples of such a card (instead of fragtbrev form); this is a very scarce use!

F26, F34, F35 [ca.1927 5 øre green; ca.1929 25 øre green and 1 kr ORANGE RED] Used VF: 5 øre lower right corner margin, 25 øre upper right corner margin, and 1 kr perforated all four sides singles (these issues had straight-edge sheet edges) with a typical minor creases, ON A FRAGTBREV (freight letter = bill of lading), dated 31 August 1934, for carriage 100 kg of melis (sugar), 15 kg of sveksker (prunes), and 15 kg of cream kiks (cream biscuits). Carried aboard the ship Dugvan to Eide. The document has only very light typical creases and wear. (Daka 2010 mentions color shades on this stamp, but Daka does not yet list them in detail). An exceptional example spanning two different issues and three denominations. In my opinion, the 5 øre stamp is considerably undervalued in the catalog.

1994 20 Kr Horses stamp design "Postcard Puzzle". An officially issued postal product consisting of a post card onto which a puzzle is attached (and wrapped in plastic so the pieces will not get lost in the mail). A rather odd type of postal product. Only one other was issued at about the same time, picturing the Sheep Dog stamp design. The puzzles were last listed in the 2000 Daka GF10 catalog. I have known about them since the late 1990s, but this is (in 2012) the first time I have ever actually seen one. The catalog value was nominal -- I doubt the catalog publisher had ever actually seen one either -- but it is a very scarce item.
