Denmark #59 [1905 3 øre Wavy Line - Numeral, crown watermark] (VF) on 24 August 1908 picture post card locally used with "KJØBENHAVN / K.*K.*B." postmark. The card is a dramatic printed photo scene of an unnamed Icelandic village on a spit of land extending into a mountain-ringed fjord; the card imprint (maker?) is "K. Rösinkranzson, Önundarfjöður" [Iceland]. The message is datelined 24 July, one month before the postmark; it was likely hand carried back to Denmark where it was mailed.

234117
Viking ship themed card commemorating events of year 874. Extremely ornate, produced in Iceland, the artwork (and probably the card) in 1912). However, the card has been twice repurposed, once for a 1958 stamp show (with tied stamp show labels which are actually quite scarce canceled), and again for a 1982 first day of a Viking theme stamp. Generally worn and with some foxing. The card in nice, original condition would be a valuable item.

Viking ship Ellidi, highly stylized painting. Real photo card (black/white) of painting, produced in Iceland, probably in the 1930s. Handwritten notation on address side says "Long Serpent", which is both the name of a real Viking ship and a more generic name for some Viking ships. A 2006 Faroese stamp issue commemorated a battle in which The Long Serpent was involved. In sagas, Ellidi shows up as the name of the ship of Thorstein Vikingson in "The Story of Frithiof the Bold". Mint Superb.

UMF 1917 5 Aur Imperforate Christmas Seal. Mint Superb, very lightly hinged. One of the rarest Christmas Seals of Iceland. AFA 2007 Seal Catalog value DKK 3000 = $585 [1/2010]. Rarely offered and very seldom in such attractive quality.
1911 Perforated ("C"ARITAS) without gray overprint on falcon. Full sheet of 20. NH with VF-Superb centering. An extraordinarily rare sheet; I have only recorded two examples of this full sheet in 36 years (I had both, this is one of the two). The break-up value of this sheet is around $1400, however, it should have much greater value due to its rarity.

Icelandic Christmas Seal Collection 1913-1958 Mint.
Icelandic Christmas Seal Collection 1913-1958. The complete set of 45 seals (there was no 1917 issue), from the first issue, all Mint. The vast majority are VF -- it is obvious that this collector carefully selected the best quality. Very fresh and neatly presented on album pages; virtually all appear to have light (peelable) first hinges. I note that the 1914 and 1925 seals lack gum (and the price has been properly adjusted) -- at a modest cost I can upgrade them upon request. Usually such collections have "clunkers" in them, but this collection is very nice! Individual retail totals over $440! Icelandic seals are among the scarcest -- this is a great opportunity to get the complete early collection. [233294]

Scott #3 Imperforate 1942 official reprint, without watermark, Black text on reverse "Nytryk til Standard-Katalog" issued without gum. Officially authorized by the post office for inclusion in a 1942 stamp catalog. All were hinged onto a small piece of paper with text and then placed inside a tiny glassine envelope. Listed by Facit as #3N and is the only official reprint of any Icelandic Skilling issue. Extremely difficult to find! Perfect condition as issued.

PÓSTSTJÓRNIN crown / posthorn letter seal. Oval, scalloped edges. Red on white paper, crown above, posthorn below. On piece from reverse of 1925 registered (tied by British blue lines) cover transiting Edinburgh 24 August 1925 and either transiting or arriving (probably) in København 27 August 1925. This may "just" be an official post office letter seal. However, often such were used to "officially seal" letters. I can only recall having one other such seal about 15-20 years ago. If anything, this price is on the low side for such an item from Iceland.

U.S. Military censorship of photographs and cards: "PHOTOGRAPH / PASSED BY / BASE CENSOR" double-ring circular censor handstamp in black on unused linen-finish, U.S.-made picture post card. The card was created in 1939 by/for the Icelandic Commission to the New York Worlds Fair and illustrates Hvanneyri, a model farm showing off Icelandic agricultural progress. The card was probably sold at the military base PX in Iceland for soldiers to use writing home. Examples of this censorship handstamp are extremely scarce; I have only seen them on unused cards.

193 [1935 10 aur Dynjandi Waterfall] design stamp-sized photographic essay model by artist Johannes Britze ca.1935. This version shows a design extremely similar to the issued stamp with double-lined outer frame and cross-lined background. (Other versions exist which are not as close to the issued design.) Photographic paper with image of design and perforations on a black background, with white outer border. Mounted on grayish green card stock. Such essays for Icelandic stamps are very rare. Though we know virtually nothing about the practices in this case, typically such items are produced in only a very few examples for presentation and approval of postal officials. I have only seen this one example of this essay in 33 years. Also a wonderful thematic item for the Waterfall collector.

A fantasy "Cinderella stamp" believed to have been privately made by American collector Brad Arch to resemble a non-existent 1 kronur AKUREYRI essay of a postage stamp or savings stamp or local revenue stamp. Very interesting production method: This is photographically printed directly onto thick photographic paper that has been perforated and gummed. The design itself is a model that shows it was assembled (prior to photographing) by cutting and pasting artwork, etc., as a stamp artist might do in the early stages of experimentation. The design includes the town emblem of AKUREYRI and the denomination "1" in lower left corner and "KR" in the lower right. No such genuine item has been recorded. However, examples of this fantasy stamp, offered as a essay or a savings stamp, have been sold at auction for considerable sums. (I have not seen the true story of this "stamp" published anywhere else.) Quite an interesting item regardless of its source.
U.S. Military censorship of photographs and cards: "PHOTOGRAPH / PASSED BY / BASE CENSOR" double-ring circular censor handstamp in black on unused real photo, locally-made picture post card showing part of downtown Reykjavík.
