International Polar Year -- Items Selling Out Fast
2007 International Polar Year Price List
I mentioned this subject in the last issue, but judging from the number of phone calls and emails I am getting, this is a popular issue and many people are trying to find a source.
The 2007 International Polar Year joint issue consists of stamps released by Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, United States, and Canada. Each country issued a souvenir sheet. Denmark and Greenland also issued normal sheet stamps. Canada also issued normal sheet stamps in a small sheet format that is very attractive and which many people will prefer to collect as a mini sheet, but they don't know about it yet. (I have received multiple, but unconfirmed, reports that this mini sheet has sold out from the post office.)
A joint book was issued; it contains only the souvenir sheet from each country. Quite interesting, with text and pictures, this book has proven to be extremely popular. The U.S., Canada, and some other countries have sold out virtually immediately; if any still have not yet sold out, it is certainly only a matter of a few days. If you just get the book, you will not have a complete collection; you will also need the Denmark, Greenland, and Canada regular sheet stamps. I also highly recommend the Canada mini sheet.

Every collector of Danish postmarks, covers, used postal stationery, etc., from the 1860s up through the turn of the century, has encountered these postmarks, but has not been able to find a catalog of them -- because there was no catalog available. Now there is!
Lapidarstemplerne -- Danish Sans-Serif, Single-Ring Town Cancellations (2007, Bendix; Lapidarstemplerne) An extremely valuable, long-needed catalog of this major cancellation type. Set of Stender 1904-2004 Christmas Seal album pages (complete including most recent supplement). These pages have not been reprinted for quite some time, thus as supplements are issued, the appearance (shade of white) is slightly different, but the pages are brand new and normally sell for $21.95. #731208 United States Celebrate the Century Commemorative Stamp Collection 1990-1999
The complete set of the 10 Celebrate the Century full sheets in a very nice officially issued USPS black album with a padded cover and silver lettering. Album has one page protector for each sheet so that the front and back can be viewed. It seems that most of these books have been broken up and nearly impossible to find as a whole. Priced at just the value of the sheets. $110.00

#731218 Czechoslovakia Collection 1953-1990
A significant portion of all Czechoslovakian stamps issued from 1953 to 1990 - appears to be all the stamps needed to fill the Kenmore pages supplied. All stamps are cancelled and have yet to be mounted on the pages. Included is a nice deep red binder with collection name on front and spine. Previous owner paid $120. $39.00

#731211 West Germany "Bundesrepublik" NH VF Collection 1949-1995
Four green Lindner #1104 albums of Lindner-T pages [the really nice pages] with matching slip cases. It starts at Lindner page #1 for Bundesrepublik. The album pages actually go to 1996, but the stamps only to 1995. Lindner does sell individual pages, etc., so there should be no problem in adding from here. On the first four pages, we found 6 hinged stamps, but only NH after that. Otherwise it appears that everything is NH. It is incredibly clean and attractive and fresh. As I have looked through it, I noted that generally the quality (centering) and overall appearance was superior! The collector took great care in building this collection. The collection is nearly complete and is offered exactly as received -- absolutely nothing has been added or removed. The "Posthorn" and "Building" sets are not present (the previous owner had not acquired them). There are just a very few other stamps not present: I believe the few that are missing are from booklets or are machine stamps. We totaled the catalog value using a 2003 Michel Catalog. That may seem odd, but we used Michel because a) the album pages have spaces for a number of stamps that Scott does not list and b) Scott is very much behind the times. Michel values have gone up a bit since that 2003 catalog, but that is in your favor; we simply did not have a more recent edition handy. The total 2003 Michel value is EURO 5409 which currently equals $7300!! If you are looking for a SUBSTANTIAL collection of West Germany, this is it! The albums are "like new" in pristine condition. The current Lindner retail for them is $796 just for the pages, binders, and slip cases!! Such a remarkably high quality collection is rarely offered intact. A tremendous opportunity! $2750.00

#731213 East Germany / DDR Collection 1949-1990
A beautiful, tremendous collection in 6 Lindner-T albums with #1104 maroon binders and matching slip cases. The collection is virtually complete and is 99.9% NH VF. There are an extremely few hinged stamps (or stamps with suspect gum) on the first few pages, however, the overwhelming majority are NH VF. There are also just a couple stamps with some type of minor quality problem, but these have not been counted in the value. There are only a very few stamps missing from the collection. To evaluate the collection we used the 2003 Michel catalog (it was the most recent edition on hand; values have surely gone up a bit, but that is to your advantage). Where we could differentiate easily, we did count type, color, and paper varieties, if present. However, if there was any doubt or if a watermark was hard to see, it was just counted at the lowest basic value. The 2003 Michel value comes to over 5800 Euros or over US$7830!! As I said, this is a tremendous collection! The Lindner "T" pages, binders, and slip cases are all pristine. The Lindner page numbering is a little confusing. As shown in their price list, they published the album in 6 parts, but they started/restarted the page numbering over with volumes 1, 2, 3. Then, although volume 3 ended with page 63, they started volume 4 with page 58 (duplicating some page numbers, but not duplicating stamps). The page numbering then continues to the end. The page numbering is a little odd, but that is the way Lindner published it and appears to be totally complete pages for the period. (If there should be any problem, Lindner does sell individual pages.) The Lindner package price for the 6 volumes of "T" pages is US$839, plus US$414 for the binders and slip cases; for a total of US$1253 of retail value in the albums! There was a time, back in the "old days" when DDR stamps had the reputation of CTOs, incomplete sets, etc., etc. However, following German Reunification it has greatly increased in status and respect. Many stamps are now quite difficult to find in such nice quality and supplies of some NH VF seem to be surprisingly limited. This collection would be hard to duplicate and would require a long time and a lot of work -- and a LOT more money! (Based on information from the previous owner, it seems his cost was nearly $5000 quite a few years ago!) This is by far the best, most complete, and nicest quality collection of this area that I have ever seen in 34 years and will probably ever see. The collection is offered exactly intact as received from the previous owner and is priced for quick sale! $2895.00

#731217 Bohemia-Moravia under Nazi German Occupation 1939-1944
Complete country - virtually all NH. This World War II time period, including the Hitler issues, has great historical value. Stamps presented in an attractive Bohemia-Moravia bound stock book album (7 1/2 by 9 1/2). The set Scott #1-19 is on a separate stock page but there is room in the album to accommodate it. 80 stamps from the Russian occupation of Nazi Germany presented, along with interesting historical background write-ups, in an attractive bound stock book album (7 1/2 by 9 1/2). This post war time period and its sometimes-crude stamps has great historical value and interest. The previous owner paid $180. $59.00

#731212 Great Britain 1990-95 NH VF Collection in Lindner Album
This collection consists of NH VF 1990-95 stamps, virtually complete on pages that run through 1996. In maroon Lindner #1104 binder with matching slip case. Consists of Lindner-T album pages [the really nice ones] #65-99 plus R/10-13 (regionals) and III/3 (postage due). Everything is absolutely pristine. (Lindner sells individual pages, thus you can get whatever you desire to expand this.) The face value of the stamps is $272.33 including calculating the 1st and 2nd class at current rates, which normally indicates a Scott value of around $544. However, there are some premium items (Machins, postage dues, etc.) which appear to push the catalog value to the $580+ range the way that Scott is supposed to calculate it. The pages have a Lindner retail value of $117 and the binder is $69, for a total of $186. This collection is priced right at face value for the stamps (a quick sale for me at that level) and valuing the pages and album at a figure I know that they would sell very quickly (any time I have any Lindner items available they sell almost immediately). $355.00

#731214 The 100th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother
Total of 22 souvenir sheets (from 1 to 10 stamps each) and 22 stamps all issued to celebrate the 100th birthday of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Several of the souvenir sheets have the Queen Mother Royal Coat of Arms embossed in gold and several of the souvenir sheets are numbered limited editions. At least one issue from 21 different British Commonwealth countries. Complete with a Kenmore blue padded binder with the collection name on the front and spine. Previous owner paid $224.00 for this collection. $49.00

#731209 Russia Collection 1940-2000 Virtually Complete
Album pages and all the stamps needed to fill the Kenmore pages for the years 1940 through 2000 (except that 1992-94 are not present). It appears that most of the stamps are Never Hinged but can not guarantee that all are. Most are VF. Included are 2 red binders with "Russia" imprinted on the front and spine. For the years 1988-1991, the stamps have been mounted on the pages in stamp mounts, otherwise the stamps are yet to be mounted. The previous owner paid $750 for the 1940-56 group, and $1596.50 for 23 of the other years. There are 18 additional years for which the purchase price is unknown, but figuring at a low average, the cost for those was probably around $720. This totals $3066.50 in original cost. #731210 Independent Soviet Republics Collection 1992-1996
This varied collection includes stamps from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. It appears that most of the stamps are from 1992 through 1996 but a few may be from outside that date range. Present are Kenmore stamp selections #6-#54 (except missing #10, #12, and #17) on black stock pages. Many stamps have topical themes such as sports (including Olympic), costumes, art, wildlife (including some WWF), birds, politics, and much more. Included are 2 binders titled "Independent Soviet Republics of the Russian Empire". The previous owner paid $1669 for 41 of the selections. There are 5 additional selections for which the purchase price is unknown but figuring at a low average, the cost for those was probably around $200. This totals $1869 in original cost. Terrific base for further development and expansion. Offered at a fraction of that original cost. $425.00
