Iceland: Bargains: Bargain Stamps - Scott #8-20: 1876-1895 Perf 14x13.5 Numerals

These bargain-priced stamps are attractive, but most have hidden flaws. You can save a tremendous amount of money when you add such stamps to your collection. Each stamp is one of a kind, so please let me know if I may substitute a different example (that looks as good or better, for the same cost) if the stamp you order has sold. If you have any doubts, all are available for approval viewing. If you are seeking stamps of this quality and price level from any of the Scandinavian countries, just send along your want list -- I will be happy to send bargains on approval. Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise stated.

11 PERFORATION ERROR, Facit #12d variety, AFA #8.7y variety, Clear Carmine Red, Thick Paper [1876 10 aur Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5 (1895 printing)] This perforation "error" variety -- blind perforation in 5th horizontal hole -- is one of four possible varieties resulting from missing horizontal row pins in the perforating machine -- they are constant varieties on the 7th (1895) printing of this stamp (and the 1895 printings of the 3 and 6 aur stamps). Each of the different perforation errors affects that vertical column in the sheet. Additionally this example has one of the several versions of the AFA #8y plate variety: "Chunk missing from upper right frame line". Similar, but different versions of this variety exist in the sheet; at least two different exist with this particular perforation error. Mint with F-VF centering with only modest hinging, but small thin spot in hinge area. Very attractive appearance with brilliant color. Mint examples of the perforation errors can be quite hard to find. A normal example of this mint stamp, without the thin spot and with this centering would be $204 -- the perforation errors are much scarcer.

12 Grayish Brown, Facit #13d [1876 16 aur brown Numeral, perforation 14 x 13.5, 1891 printing] Mint, reasonably hinged, with Average centering. A nice looking example at a great price. [This 1891 grayish brown "unclean color" printing can be hard to distinguish from the 1886 yellowish brown printing (color names per the catalogs). When directly compared, the 1891 color does look a bit grayish (and sometimes muddy), but in my opinion it looks more yellowish than the 1886 printing. If I had selected the color names, I would have called the 1891 yellowish brown and the 1886 either brown or reddish brown.] With VF centering, this would otherwise be $170!

12 Dark Brown Grainy Print, Thin Paper, Facit #13a [1876 16 aur brown Numeral, perforation 14 x 13.5, 1876 printing] Mint, no gum (as usual for this printing), with Average centering (which is typical for this printing). Excellent color showing the grainy print. Though undamaged examples of this printing are scarce, any Mint/Unused examples of this printing are very scarce -- to emphasize this point, the specialized catalogs do not even price NH examples! (Facit 2021 SEK 4500 with gum = approx US$540 7/21.)

13a, Facit #14a (Print 1: Light Violet, Blurred Print on Thin Paper) [1876 20 aur light violet Numeral] Used with VF centering and appearance, but with minor faults: tiny pinhole, ironed out filing crease, and rounded upper left corner perf. Neat and correct AKURE(YRI) town cancellation. This printing was on such thin paper that examples are usually defective. This stamp is missing from most Iceland collections. Offered at a very low price. Facit 2022 value SEK 4400.

Small defect on reverse at upper left corner. A very reasonable looking example of Scott #15 at a very low price. Would otherwise be $72.

15 Golden Yellow [1882 3 aur, Small 3, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint with VF centering and large margins, but no gum and with a small crease that could perhaps be flattened out. This is a complicated and controversial stamp color; it was the subject of an extensive article, by expert Lasse Nielsen, in one of the Danish journals around 2013-2017; I cannot find my copy of the article at this moment. For many years Facit did not list this color, but they do now as Facit #8v3. Facit describes it as being on "thick soft white paper from Printing 2 or 3, not yet determined which". I agree with that except that in my opinion, the paper is "medium (but close to thin), very crisp (not soft), and it is white." AFA lists this color as #12.3b, being from Printing 3b and describes the paper as "medium". Regardless, this is an extremely scarce stamp. Facit and AFA only price it (as they always do) with gum, but the three Mint examples I have recorded having in the last 25 years have all been without gum; I do not think I have had an example with gum in my 48-year career. Facit 2022 value is SEK 8000 = $960 [12/2021] and AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) value is DKK 6000 = $1020 [12/2021]. Well centered examples of this color are "rare". Despite the small crease, which is hard to see, this is by far the best looking example of this stamp that I have had in 48 years. It is really stunning with wonderful centering, brilliant color, and perfect perforations. An exceptional stamp that will help to build an exceptional collection.

AFA 1997 value DKK 6000 = US$1000 [1/2013] and Facit 2013 value SEK 8000 = US$1280 [1/2013]. Very fresh and attractive with wonderful color.

17a Ultramarine [1882 20 aur ultramarine Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5] Mint, with only partial (disturbed) gum remaining. F-VF centering . Wonderful, intense, ultramarine color and perfect perforations. This ultramarine printing is quite scarce with any gum at all. The Facit 2022 value for with gum is SEK 7000! To further emphasize the point, Facit does not even attempt to price never hinged. A wonderful looking example. If an example with this centering had full gum (hinged), it would fetch $590.

17a, Facit #15a, AFA #14.3 [1882 20 aur ultramarine Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5 (1882 AFA Printing 3)] Used with VF centering and neat, light single-ring cancellation from a smaller town (not Reykjavik). A couple blunted perforations, but such light cancellations and great appearance are quite unusual for this scarce stamp. PLATE VARIETY not listed by AFA, but obvious enough that it would normally be listed by AFA: "dent in bottom frame line near right corner". A wonderful looking example that would otherwise (without the couple blunted perfs) sell for $290!
