Iceland: Stamps: Scott 8-20: 1876-1892 Perforation 14 x 13.5 Numerals
Scott numbers have been given for these listings. If you would prefer to examine the stamps before purchasing, or you are any seeking stamps (or any condition or any quality) not listed here, please send your want list using your choice of Scott or Facit numbers.
Unless there is a 6-digit item number in the left-most column, the images shown in this section are standard images of the issues from my image library; they are presented to show the designs of the stamp issues and not to show the specific individual stamps being offered. The centering of the stamps in the images is usually Superb or VF quality; again these are not images of the individual stamps being offered. Most early stamps had multiple printings, thus color shades vary greatly; the colors in the images are random printings/colors. If there is a 6-digit item number in the left-most column, the image is of the actual item being offered.
All the listed conditions and qualities were in stock at the moment this list was prepared and I endeavor to maintain them in stock and to keep this website updated. However, my stock changes daily and (to paraphrase) good stamps are hard to find. If you are willing to accept a different grade or quality if an item is temporarily out of stock, please let me know when ordering (add a comment at the conclusion of the shopping cart process) and please also let me know of any alternates you will consider. Furthermore, new stamps are being put in stock every day; if the quality and/or condition you are seeking is not listed, please send your want list.
The publication of this list is a "first effort" in quite a long time. It surely includes a few errors; I will be grateful if you would inform me of any errors. Stamps "missing" from the list simply might not be included because they are not in stock or are singles which are normally only listed in full sets. Just the same if it seems like something obvious (and not a single from a set) is missing, please let me know. If you can offer for sale items that are not listed here, please do so; I especially need sources of pre-1940 mint (hinged or never hinged) stamps and recent used complete sets. Prices are subject to typographical error and change, but I will do my best to honor the listed prices to the extent of available stock.
See additional examples of Icelandic Stamps in the following Sections:
    New Arrivals.
Specialized Stamps many pages starting here (Varieties, Blocks, Cancellations, and other interesting items).
"Gallery" offering scarcer stamps such as Skllings, Prir overprints, and scarce I Gildi overprints.
Several "Bargains" pages offering inexpensive examples of stamps, usually with hidden defects.
Stamps with Tollur (customs revenue) cancellations.
TIP: These price list pages are in Scott number order. To most easily navigate these stamp price list pages, use the "drop down" menu located above this text (and at the bottom of every page). You can also hover over the numbered page links and read the name of the page in the bottom status bar of your browser.

10, Facit #11d, AFA 7.4 [1876 6 aur gray, blurred print Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5, Fourth Printing] NEVER HINGED with F-VF centering. Wonderfully fresh -- this must be from a recently broken block. An interesting feature of stamps from this printing is that when viewed under 10x magnification at an oblique angle to a point-light source, the ink has a silvery metallic sheen. NH examples of this stamp (Scott #10) are very scarce and seldom offered. (The 4th and 5th printings have the same NH value, no premium for the printing.) Terrific color, perfect perforations, and perfect original gum. [Facit 2022 value SEK 4000 (about $440 2/2022).]

11, Facit #12d (Print 7) Thick Paper, with Perforation Variety. [1876 10 aur, Perf 14 x 13.5, 1895 printing] Mint with original gum, VF centering! Catalog listed perforation "error": blind hole 4 on top and bottom; on this denomination, only exists on the 1895 printing. On this example, the rough perforation also shows that the perforator was really wearing out by this time. Also with unlisted plate variety: Bottom frame line with dent at center and thinning to the left corner. A very handsome mint example of this workhorse stamp of which supplies were exhausted in normal postal use.

11 PERFORATION ERROR, Facit #12d variety, AFA #8.7y variety, Clear Carmine Red, Thick Paper [1876 10 aur Numeral, Perf 14 x 13.5 (1895 printing)] This perforation "error" variety -- blind perforation in 5th horizontal hole -- is one of four possible varieties resulting from missing horizontal row pins in the perforating machine -- they are constant varieties on the 7th (1895) printing of this stamp (and the 1895 printings of the 3 and 6 aur stamps). Each of the different perforation errors affects that vertical column in the sheet. Additionally this example has one of the several versions of the AFA #8y plate variety: "Chunk missing from upper right frame line". Similar, but different versions of this variety exist in the sheet; at least two different exist with this particular perforation error. Mint with VF centering with only modest hinging. Very attractive appearance -- exceptionally well-centered example. Mint examples of the perforation errors can be quite hard to find. A normal example of this mint stamp would be $270 -- the perforation errors are much scarcer.

11, Facit #12a-II (Print 2) Early Printing, Light Reddish Carmine, Thin Paper. AFA #8.2 [1876 (1878 Printing) 10 aur, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with Fine centering and neat, light single ring cancellation. Facit #12a represents printings 1-4 (but the AFA lists them individually); the individual printings are of course scarcer than the combined quantity of all four printings. Examples of the early printings in attractive quality are surprisingly hard to find. The AFA Specialized 2016 (the most recent edition) value is DKK 300 [about US$45 10/2023] while the Facit 2024 value for all four printings combined is SEK 400 [about US$40 10/2023]. An excellent example of this early color.

12 Grayish Brown, Facit #13d [1876 16 aur brown Numeral, perforation 14 x 13.5, 1891 printing] Mint, lightly hinged, with SUPERB centering. Excellent color, perfect centering, and perfect perforations. [This 1891 grayish brown "unclean color" printing can be hard to distinguish from the 1886 yellowish brown printing (color names per the catalogs). When directly compared, the 1891 color does look a bit grayish (and sometimes muddy), but in my opinion it looks more yellowish than the 1886 printing. If I had selected the color names, I would have called the 1891 yellowish brown and the 1886 either brown or reddish brown.] Such nice looking Mint examples of the 16 aur are quite hard to find. This must be the nicest Mint example of this stamp that I have had in 47 years!

Each of the different perforation errors affects that vertical column in the sheet. Mint with F-VF centering. There is some gum loss where a hinge was removed (and the gum went with the hinge), but it does not have a thin and does not show any defect in watermark fluid. Very attractive appearance. 15 Golden Yellow [1882 3 aur, Small 3, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint with VF centering and large margins, but no gum and with a small crease that could perhaps be flattened out. This is a complicated and controversial stamp color; it was the subject of an extensive article, by expert Lasse Nielsen, in one of the Danish journals around 2013-2017; I cannot find my copy of the article at this moment. For many years Facit did not list this color, but they do now as Facit #8v3. Facit describes it as being on "thick soft white paper from Printing 2 or 3, not yet determined which". I agree with that except that in my opinion, the paper is "medium (but close to thin), very crisp (not soft), and it is white." AFA lists this color as #12.3b, being from Printing 3b and describes the paper as "medium". Regardless, this is an extremely scarce stamp. Facit and AFA only price it (as they always do) with gum, but the three Mint examples I have recorded having in the last 25 years have all been without gum; I do not think I have had an example with gum in my 48-year career. Facit 2022 value is SEK 8000 = $960 [12/2021] and AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) value is DKK 6000 = $1020 [12/2021]. Well centered examples of this color are "rare". Despite the small crease, which is hard to see, this is by far the best looking example of this stamp that I have had in 48 years. It is really stunning with wonderful centering, brilliant color, and perfect perforations. An exceptional stamp that will help to build an exceptional collection.

17a Ultramarine [1882 20 aur ultramarine Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5] Mint, with only partial (disturbed) gum remaining. F-VF centering . Wonderful, intense, ultramarine color and perfect perforations. This ultramarine printing is quite scarce with any gum at all. The Facit 2022 value for with gum is SEK 7000! To further emphasize the point, Facit does not even attempt to price never hinged. A wonderful looking example. If an example with this centering had full gum (hinged), it would fetch $590.

20, Facit #19, AFA #17 INVERTED FRAME [1892 100 aur brown and lilac Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5] Mint, moderately hinged, with F-VF centering. [The Bicolored Numeral stamps of Iceland do have frame differences (the quantity of vertical background lines broken by the upper right or lower left corner triangles that identify the frames as upright or inverted. By chance the quantities are even; the plate consisted of 51 upright vs 49 inverted frame stamps, thus there is no price premium. For details, see this article with illustrations on my website. However, this difference is unknown to most collectors; if the difference was more obvious and better known, the extant quantity of stamps would be divided in half, with each half being assigned different catalog numbers -- half as many stamps (of each number) would result in higher catalog values / prices for each of the two types.] This example is very fresh and bright, with nice centering, and perfect perforations. Priced just as a basic stamp with this centering.
