Iceland: Stamps: Scott 45-68: 1902-1903 I Gildi Overprints
Scott numbers have been given for these listings. If you would prefer to examine the stamps before purchasing, or you are any seeking stamps (or any condition or any quality) not listed here, please send your want list using your choice of Scott or Facit numbers.
Unless there is a 6-digit item number in the left-most column, the images shown in this section are standard images of the issues from my image library; they are presented to show the designs of the stamp issues and not to show the specific individual stamps being offered. The centering of the stamps in the images is usually Superb or VF quality; again these are not images of the individual stamps being offered. Most early stamps had multiple printings, thus color shades vary greatly; the colors in the images are random printings/colors. If there is a 6-digit item number in the left-most column, the image is of the actual item being offered.
All the listed conditions and qualities were in stock at the moment this list was prepared and I endeavor to maintain them in stock and to keep this website updated. However, my stock changes daily and (to paraphrase) good stamps are hard to find. If you are willing to accept a different grade or quality if an item is temporarily out of stock, please let me know when ordering (add a comment at the conclusion of the shopping cart process) and please also let me know of any alternates you will consider. Furthermore, new stamps are being put in stock every day; if the quality and/or condition you are seeking is not listed, please send your want list.
The publication of this list is a "first effort" in quite a long time. It surely includes a few errors; I will be grateful if you would inform me of any errors. Stamps "missing" from the list simply might not be included because they are not in stock or are singles which are normally only listed in full sets. Just the same if it seems like something obvious (and not a single from a set) is missing, please let me know. If you can offer for sale items that are not listed here, please do so; I especially need sources of pre-1940 mint (hinged or never hinged) stamps and recent used complete sets. Prices are subject to typographical error and change, but I will do my best to honor the listed prices to the extent of available stock.
TIP: These price list pages are in Scott number order. To most easily navigate these stamp price list pages, use the "drop down" menu located above this text (and at the bottom of every page). You can also hover over the numbered page links and read the name of the page in the bottom status bar of your browser.

Scott #48a, Facit #62bv1 INVERTED OVERPRINT [1902 25 aur Bicolored with GREENISH-BLUE OVAL, Perf 12.75 with Red I GILDI INVERTED Overprint] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF+ centering. AIEP member and preeminent I Gildi expert Ellis Glatt viewed a high resolution image of this stamp in July 2025 and commented that the overprint is genuine in his opinion. Glatt preliminarily noted that the overprint appears to be from Setting I and appears to from position 34 in the overprint plate (of 50) and that the underlying stamp appears to be from position 17 in the stamp plate (of 100, in the bicolors), which would be consistent with the overprinting of a full inverted sheet. The overprint plate was always of 50 subjects, five rows and ten columns, struck twice to overprint a full sheet of stamps. The underlying BICOLORED stamps were printed with a plate of 100 subjects, whereas all the single-color stamps (except the Large-3 of 1901 which was printed with a plate of 100 subjects) were printed with four impressions of a plate of 25 subjects. Because of this, on the Bicolored stamps, if enough of both the overprint and underlying stamp features can be seen, the exact plate position can often be determined and thus it can often be determined if the inverted overprinting was done on a full sheet VS a partial or reconstructed sheet as occurred sometimes. There are two printings / colors of the 25 aur stamp (both listed by Facit) and the inverted overprint is known to exist on both colors, but none of the references break-out the potentially-different catalog values for the two printings / colors with inverted overprint. While the total quantity of inverted overprints on the 25 aur is not known, when divided between the two printings / colors, there are fewer of each of the two than might otherwise be assumed. An excellent example of a stamp that is not often offered! [From the Frederick H. Campbell collection.]

Scott #48 with CLEAR BLUE OVAL, Facit #62a [1902 25 aur Perf 12.75 with Red I GILDI overprint] NEVER HINGED with XF-Superb centering (which many people might call Superb). Wonderfully fresh with brilliant color, "virtually perfect" centering, "perfect" perforations, and gum as nice as the day it was printed. While this is not a "scarce" stamp with normal centering, it is amazingly hard to find such a nicely centered example in NH condition.

51 [1902 "I GILDI" black overprint on 4 aur Numeral, Perforation 12.75] Used with F-VF+ centering and neat, partial (S)KAGAS(TRÖND) CROWN AND POSTHORN CANCELLATION. There is only one possible postmark for the letters showing in this cancellation. This postmark on the least costly stamp is listed by Facit 2024 at SEK 400. The stamp itself with an ordinary postmark would sell for $54. Crown and Posthorn cancellations are unusual on the I GILDI stamps. Very pretty stamp.

55 [1902 16 aur Perf 12.75 with Black I GILDI overprint] NEVER HINGED, but with Average centering and rounded lower right corner. Just for comparison, #55 with slightly better (Fine) centering and without a perforation issue, would be $55 for NH Fine or $21 for Mint Hinged Fine. This example is priced very low.

60, Facit #45c [1902 5 aur Perf 14 x 13.5 with Red I GILDI overprint] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF+ centering. The overprint is from Setting V and is position 11 on the overprint plate (of 50) which correctly corresponds with the underlying sheet position possibilities of 11 or 61 (based on the cliche features of the underlying stamp). This overprint exists on all three printings / colors of the underlying stamp -- this is Facit #45c, the Light Green. The stamp is in outstanding quality for this issue, with wonderfully fresh color and with perfect perforations. One perforation tooth toward the left, at top and bottom, is very thin -- this is a natural feature of the perforation tool in that column of stamps of the sheet. AIEP member and preeminent I Gildi expert Ellis Glatt viewed a high resolution image of the stamp in October 2024 and commented that the overprint is genuine in his opinion. This stamp is accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with a "lifetime guarantee" from Jay Smith (details of the guarantee are available upon request). The Scott 2025 value is $2100 and the Facit 2024 value is SEK 19,000. An outstanding example of an extremely scarce stamp! [From the Frederick H. Campbell collection.]

Scott #68 [1902 100 aur with I GILDI overprint, Perforation 14 x 13.5] NEVER HINGED with VF centering, but with a couple tiny age/tone spots on the gum that just barely show on the front. Very attractive with great color, "perfect" perforations, and otherwise excellent NH original gum. Both nicely centered and NH examples of this stamp are hard to find, but this example is priced very low! NH with this centering would otherwise be $170 (and Mint NH with this centering would otherwise be $95)!

Scott #68a, Facit #44v1 INVERTED OVERPRINT [1902 100 aur Bicolored Perf 14 x 13.5 with Black I GILDI INVERTED Overprint] Mint hinged with F-VF++ centering. AIEP member and preeminent I Gildi expert Ellis Glatt viewed a high resolution image of this stamp in July 2025 and commented that the overprint is genuine in his opinion. Glatt preliminarily noted that the overprint appears to be from Setting II and appears to from position 28 in the overprint plate (of 50) and that the underlying stamp appears to be from position 23 in the stamp plate (of 100, in the bicolors), which would be consistent with the overprinting of a full inverted sheet. The overprint plate was always of 50 subjects, five rows and ten columns, struck twice to overprint a full sheet of stamps. The inverted overprint on the 100 aur stamp is remarkably difficult to find relative to its value in various catalogs, especially in such nice quality. An excellent example of a "very scarce" stamp!
