Sweden: Cancellations: By Town: S
Scott numbers have been used for the stamps unless otherwise indicated. The quality / centering of the stamp is stated separately from the quality / centering of the cancellation. In a postmark / cancellation context, the quality / centering of the cancellation is usually the dominant driver of the value. All these items and many thousands more are available for viewing on approval. Please request approvals; due to lack of time, the vast majority of my Swedish cancellation stock will never make it to the website or price lists.

Swedish cancellations starting with the letter "Å", "Ä" and "Ö" are at the end of the A-Z alphabet. Over time (and particularly as part of a major change in 1900) there have been changes in the spelling of Swedish town names and/or which letters are used for the same purpose. For the purpose of our cancellation listings, the spelling in the cancellation has been used, thus if you are looking for a particular town, look in the appropriate multiple places in the alphabet. As examples... W has changed to V: Varberg and Warberg are the same town, but in different periods of time. F has also sometimes changed to V: V(W)ifstavarf has become Vivstavarv. Q has sometimes changed to K: Qvibille has become Kvibille. [General information on other letter-use changes is welcome.]

Home County (Län) / Province (Landskap) collecting: The 21 Swedish Counties are current administrative units, while the 25 Swedish Provinces are historical, geographical, and cultural designations. The borders of each are sometimes the same, but are often different, with many inclusions, exclusions, and combinations and changes over time. It is too complicated a subject for discussion here. Collecting Swedish postmarks and cancellations is often done at the Province level, so-called "home town collecting". The Facit "Postal" Cancellations and Postal History Catalog (which is available from us) provides a map and a set of abbreviations for each County and Province. Using the abbreviations from the Facit Postal, in some case our descriptions will include the County and Province for a town in square brackets, such as "[F-SM]" (Jönköping County-Län / Småland Province-Landskap). A web page can be searched with "Control+f" or "Command+f". To find the COUNTIES, search using a square bracket, followed the County abbreviation, followed by a dash, such as "[F-". To find PROVINCES, search using a dash, followed by the Province abbreviation, followed by a square bracket, such as "-SM]".

Scott #23 PALE RED, Facit #22d [1872 20 öre red/orange shades Ringtype, Perforation 14] Used with Fine+ centering. A beautiful example of this scarcer color with delicate color, "perfect" perforations, and an XF-Superb SKÖFDE 26 November 1874 cancellation. Facit 2024 indicates that this color was produced in 1873 and 1874, which matches with the date of the cancellation. A very striking example of a color that is seldom offered and which is "remarkably scarce" with such a nice cancellation.

273a/273 (Facit #261BC) [1938 5 öre New Sweden (Settler and Indian), pair with straight-edge on left side only] Used BC PAIR with XF centering, Superb-centered, but with some blunted perforations on the right side. Neat SPENSHULT 10 May 1938 village cancellations. Quite attractive example despite the perforations. Otherwise would be $55 for this quality and cancellation; the #273a single is in perfect quality.

Scott #322 Very Light Greenish Blue, Facit #332cBB BOOKLET PAIR [1941 (1953-1957 Printing) 5 kronor Stockholm Royal Palace Booklet Issue] Used with VF centering. Crisp, Superbly centered 6 June 1957 "STOCKHOLM 16" town cancellation. The "BB" (booklet pairs with both stamps perforated on three sides) booklets were first issued 7 July 1953. Examples canceled in 1953-1957 are remarkably hard to find! The Facit Catalog numbers the 1953 (Dull) Light Blue printing as color "c" [for this printing, I do not agree with their word "Dull" in their color name] and the 1958 Dull Greenish Blue printing as color "d". However, as this 1957-canceled example demonstrates, there was ALSO a Very Light Greenish Blue color printed sometime in the 1953-1957 time period that either Facit does not list (or Facit should have used a 1957 year date instead of the 1958 year date for the their "d" color. Though this is common as a single stamp, attractive Used examples, without any defects, of the "BB" booklet pairs of THIS COLOR, CANCELED BEFORE the Facit-listed 1958 printing in Dull Greenish Blue, are remarkably hard to find.
