1937 Irish Free State Hospitals Sweepstake Ticket: "The Cesarewitch" run at Newmarket, England, on October 27, 1937. "Mint" complete 10 shillings ticket with full stub including binding tab. Wonderful quality with only some minor bending at the binding edge, which seems appropriate. Wonderfully ornate and complex design, apparently to prevent counterfeiting (notice is given of a $1000 reward for the conviction of such persons). In the process of researching this ticket I determined that this one seems to be on the scarcer end of the spectrum. Furthermore, I was awestruck by the array of designs and images for the different drawings -- I could easily convince myself to collect such tickets! While such at ticket itself is non-philatelic, they do have postal history significance: This ticket is from a ticket book mailed to the U.S. in July 1937; it is my understanding that such mailings were (and are) forbidden by the U.S. post office and if the post office knew of the contents of the envelope, the envelope and contents would have been confiscated.
