Scott #76-87 Scott listings imply that these stamps have ordinary paper, with #76a-85a as being explicitly listed on chalky paper. As of Scott 2023, #86-87 are included in the ordinary paper group. Scott 76-85 (76a-85a) were originally issued in 1938, with #86-87 first issued in 1947. Stanley Gibbons (SG) 2014, however, lists their basic numbers as being on chalky paper and states in a footnote "The ordinary paper, used as a substitute for the chalk-surfaced for printings between 1942 and 1945, is thick, smooth and opaque." This means that Scott #86-87 must be on (thinner) chalky paper NOT on (thicker) ordinary paper [as of January 2023 this information has been reported to Scott] and thus they CANNOT be used as comparison standards of what the ordinary paper looks like. The papers used by printer Harrison varied during the years over which this issue had repeated printings; the various chalky paper printings during 1938-1947 thus vary in appearance with heavier and lighter chalky coatings. The ordinary paper vs chalky paper can be quite difficult to sort out, however, under 10x to 20x magnification, the chalky paper does NOT show any paper fibers on the surface of the front of the stamps; under high-enough magnification it does show a coating being present; and it often has "shiny spots" under magnification.
