Essay for Postal Card: 1914 5 kr (!!) Eidsvold / Parliament Postal Card essay submitted to the post office for consideration by the Kristiania Philatelic Society. Due to the extremely high (for the time) face value, this seems to be a very odd essay for a postal card. Perhaps the idea was that a more reasonable postage value would be used on an issued card. Seemingly using the Wergeland painting (which was used for the issued stamps), the design is reminiscent of the issued stamp design, but larger, the small text at top vs bottom reversed, etc. 5 kr denomination (which is many multiples of any postal card rate) in dark blue, measuring 140 x 90 mm, with text "CARTE POSTALE / BREVKORT". This is the only example of such an item that I have had (I know of another one in a private collection) in 42 years. From the Norman Gary collection. |
