Drama in the Arctic: S.O.S. Italia: Polar Search for Nobile and Amundsen (Goldberg, 2003) Fascinating story of the search for and rescue of the crew of the dirigible Italia (a Zeppelin-like lighter-than-air craft). In 1928 the Italia flew from Svalbard / Spitzbergen to the North Pole. On the way back to Spitzbergen, it crashed with 16 souls on board. This book tells the story of the search for and rescue of the crew, through the use of history and postal history. The rescue included 23 aircraft, 16 ships, and 1400 men. In the process, 17 men died, including the famous explorer Roald Amundsen. Beautiful 144-page book IN ENGLISH, heavily illustrated.
