ICELAND DATE BLOCKS
Massive expansion of listings. The most complete listing on the Internet!

The Iceland Date Block listings have been massively expanded. with dozens of items that are the first examples I have had in 35 years! Printing date imprints only exist on the engraved issues from 1975 to about 1985. Icelandic date blocks are fun to collect and virtually are quite inexpensive. Most issues were printed on only a couple/few days, thus there are typically only a couple or a few blocks to be obtained per issue. However, some dates are certainly scarcer than others -- but we don't yet have a good idea of which dates are scarcest, thus they are all priced about the same for an issue. This is the time to get them before some become much more costly as more is learned about their scarcity. There are three pages of listings. Take a look.

SLANIA-ENGRAVED
RARE Princess Grace Memorial Souvenir Sheet Proofs

Princess Grace is a thematic of interest to many collectors, but the 1982 Slania-engraved memorial souvenir sheet issue is especially sought after. The issued, perforated, souvenir sheet has a black stamp and border with the rest of the elements in bright blue. For the first time since the stamps were issued, I have found three (only one example of each) imperforate color proofs of this souvenir sheet. Color proofs of any of the Monaco souvenir sheets are especially scarce. The three examples I have obtained have the black stamp and border (as does the final version), but the other elements are in various combinations of black or dark greenish blue. I have found only one of each and they will likely be the only examples I ever see! They are priced at $390 each and can be seen here (the listings are in Scott number order; this is #1367) along with three other pages illustrating Slania-engraved Monaco proofs that I have had over time. (I am recording these as a reference feature.)

If you enjoy the beautifully engraved stamps created by Czeslaw Slania, take a look at my full Slania-engraved listings. There is lots to see there. However, I don't yet have all Slania's stamps listed, so if you are seeking something you don't see, please email your want list to me.

UNITED STATES Mint and Canceled
Full Sheets, Souvenir Sheets, Booklets
Many New Items Added

Dozens of new mint and canceled U.S. full sheets, souvenir sheets, and booklets have been added. I even have the 2008 Journalists issue that everybody is looking for. Also the 2000 Submarines booklet (mint and canceled) and virtually all the Looney Tunes issues.

The MINT SECTION and USED SECTION are in separate sections, each in Scott number order. There are 21 pages in each section! For now the full sheets, souvenir sheets, and booklets are all in the same respective run of pages, by Scott number order of the basic stamp.

All of the canceled items have been actually used to pay postage and fees in controlled mail situations. They are all in VF quality with neat postmarks such as you see in the website pictures (the dates may vary somewhat). Many of these items are very scarce in VF quality with neat postmarks, and especially at such low prices!

If you are seeking Early U.S. Stamps, there are 40 pages starting here.

WORLDWIDE STAMPS

A wide range of worldwide stamps have been added, especially from (but not limited to) the following countries: Aden, Bahrain, Bechuanaland Protectorate, Colombia, Cyprus, Dominica, Falkland Islands, France, French Colonies, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, and Nigeria.

Please see the Worldwide Table of Contents for these countries and many, many more. Check for your favorite countries.

2.  Jay Smith & Associates Gift Certificates Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

There are few people harder to buy gifts for than collectors (whether they be collectors of stamps or something else). If you are reading this, I presume that you are a collector -- and you have probably experienced receiving gifts from well-meaning family members but which missed the mark of your collecting interests. The best way to get holiday gifts of items that you actually want is to ... ask for them!

I invite you to give some gift hints to your family members. It could be in the form of a specific stamp want list, or the name of a philatelic book, or perhaps a gift certificate.

If you know that I already understand your collecting interests and quality/condition criteria, then your gift want list can be fairly simple. Otherwise be sure your list includes information about the condition and quality desired. I am happy to help your family members with stamps (or other items) for your collection. As always, any such items are fully returnable so there is no risk whatsoever!

Another great idea is a philatelic book or catalog. Let your family members know which titles you would find most useful.

And, if you prefer to make your own selections at a later time and/or wish to have some spending money for approvals, etc., a gift certificate is the way to go. I am happy to provide gift certificates for any amount of $25 or more. Payment can be by credit card (or check, etc.). Gift certificates have NO limitations or expiration dates. We even keep track of unused gift certificates so that they can never get lost or forgotten!

Help yourself by helping others find the perfect gift for you!

We welcome phone calls [ask for Bonnie Smith] from your family members (or you!) at 1-800-447-8267 (toll-free in the U.S. or Canada) or emails at js@JaySmith.com or postal letters.

Faroe Book Back in Stock; Terrific Holiday Gift

More Stamps and Story of the Faroe Islands, by Don Brandt, is a terrific 360 page book intertwining the philately, culture, geography, and history of the Faroes. Completely in English with many illustrations, this book is one of those rare philatelic books that is fun to read. Obviously this book was designed and written for stamp collectors that would like to know the stories behind the stamps and more about these intriguing North Atlantic islands and their people. However, anybody interested in Faroe culture or history would find this book fascinating.

I have had trouble getting and keeping this book in stock, but I again have a small supply and recommend it as a wonderful potential holiday gift.

The price is only $79 (it is worth it!). Shipping in the U.S. is only $3 by media mail; a bit more if by Priority Mail, or if sent outside the U.S.

Order on-line or by phone [ask for Bonnie Smith] 1-800-447-8267 (toll-free in the U.S. and Canada).

Federal and North Carolina Duck Stamp Prints

A local collector has offered three very nice Duck Stamp prints, two of which are very scarce and sought after. They are priced to sell quickly; these are terrific deals!

(The pictures below were taken with a new digital camera, without reading the instructions, in poor lighting. The actual prints are beautiful and in excellent condition in all respects.)

U.S. Federal Duck Stamp Print: 1975, Scott #RW42: Artist (James P. Fisher) signed print with additional pencil sketching (remarque) at lower right (this was only done on a few and I am told that on this print it adds about $150 to the value) with deluxe linen matte in handsome frame, accompanied by matted artist signed mint stamp. This is one of the scarcest modern-era prints and artist-signed stamps. Major duck stamp dealers list the print "regular edition" at $695 (but with the remarque it is closer to $850) and the artist-signed stamp at $300-350. Total value from other sources (if they have it in stock) is at least $1000 and perhaps more if this is a scarcer edition of the print. Priced for quick sale at only $500! (Shipping is postpaid in the U.S. for this item only. If one or both of the other two are also ordered with this item, shipping on those will be postpaid in the U.S.)

U.S. Federal Duck Stamp Print: 1982, Scott #RW49: Artist-signed print matted and in handsome frame, accompanied by matted mint stamp. Major duck stamp dealers list the print, with stamp, at $135-175. Priced for quick sale at only $75! The framing probably cost nearly this much! (Shipping additional for this item.)

North Carolina Duck Stamp Print: 1983, #NC-1 First issue of North Carolina! Artist-signed (Richard W. Plasschaert) print matted (not framed) accompanied by matted mint stamp. This is a scarce issue; one reference indicates a catalog value of $1000! Major duck stamp dealers list the print, with stamp, at $249 (and the stamp alone for $70). Priced for quick sale at only $145! (Shipping additional for this item.)

Chicagopex 2008
November 21-23, 2008
Arlington Heights, IL
Sheraton Chicago Northwest Hotel (Arlington Heights)

This is the Scandinavian Collectors Club 2008 "convention show". Plan to attend for excellent Scandinavian exhibits and fellowship with Scandinavian philatelists. This show will have an emphasis on Scandinavian exhibits and presentations. An exhibition judge will be attending from Scandinavia.

If you collect Scandinavia and live within traveling distance of Chicago (or have travel plans that coincide with these dates) plan to attend. The hotel is located only about 13 miles from O'Hare Airport.

For more details, the latest information, and links to the stamp show websites, see our show schedule.

4.  Special Offers: Collections & Albums -- Great Buys Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

I am constantly buying large and small Scandinavian, U.S., and Worldwide collections. If you are considering getting into a new area and would like a "starter collection" (whether small or large), let me know about your interest. Also, if you are seeking used binders or used empty albums to match what you currently have, again, let me know. In the process of buying Scandinavian collections, many of my long-time clients (or their estates) ask that I assist in selling the non-Scandinavian portion of their collections. If there is something you are looking for, just let me know. Take a look at the current listings on the web site (but if you don't see your interest listed, please inquire -- most have not been listed on the web site yet).

I guarantee your satisfaction. Each item is one of a kind; orders will be filled in order of receipt. Payment by MasterCard or Visa suggested, but I will hold items for 10 days pending receipt of your check or money order if you prefer.

Most of these books are one-of-a-kind, thus be sure to order early. This is just a tiny glimpse of the used books available. Please take a look at the complete Literature Specials price list -- it has much more to offer. I welcome your want list for any Scandinavian books you are seeking. "New" books will be in brand-new condition. "Used" books will be used, though in attractive and serviceable condition; these books may contain minor owner's marks and have typical wear, but any significant defects will be noted in the description. Most "used" books are in much better condition than you might think; many are pristine.
