The Danish purpose-specific parcel post stamps were overprinted "POSTFÆRGE", meaning postal ferry; the ferries were operated by the post office. These stamps were only used for parcels carried on a few ferries between the mainland and nearby islands. After 1942, thus by the era when the vast majority of "on cover" (on fragtbrev) use can be found by collectors, all of the use was between the mainland town of Esbjerg and the town of Nordby on the island of Fanø. After about 1925, the vast majority of uses were canceled with various types of double-oval cancellations. The stamps were virtually always applied to "fragtbrev" (freight letters) which are analogous to the parcel cards used in Denmark (and throughout much of Europe) for normal domestic parcel mail. (Normal postage stamps were used for all other parcel mail in Denmark.) The fragtbrev "cards" from the 1950s onward were printed on fairly thin paper -- usually yellowish or brownish -- not on card stock. While the POSTFÆRGE stamps were occasionally applied to tags tied to the parcels, examples of the stamps on actual envelopes are quite rare because the service was for parcels and freight, not for correspondence. "On cover" (on fragtbrev) uses are rare before 1936; quite scarce from 1936 to 1948; but more available from 1949 through the end of service in 1977. I have not found any rate or calculation information in the literature, nor have I been able to parse out the rate structure. I welcome suggestions about where this information can be found.
