Stampless cover, unpaid, with "6" Postage Due, with 12 October 1856 STUBBEKJÖBING one-ring cancellations. No contents. Very ornate addressing and with bold red crayon "6" postage due marking. While unpaid letters were still accepted for mailing at this time, the practice had become uncommon and by now recipients were typically expecting the sender to pay the postage. This small town was the hometown of early Lutheran missionary Hans Egede, well known for his work in Greenland (he is pictured on Danish and Greenlandic stamps). Very attractive. ACTUAL item. |

Though does not appear to have the typical markings of official mail, this is likely to be such. Unfranked and on the front (and also on reverse) only a "1" marking in red. Very attractive and fresh.
