Select Stamps - Scott #97-134: 1913-1928 King Christian X
98, AFA #98x PLATE VARIETY [1918 7 øre "orange to yellow" Christian X] Used with VF-XF centering and 1919 cancellation. While on the yellowish side of the spectrum, this is not the scarce yellow printing. AFA-listed plate variety, AFA #98x: "E of ØRE with white line connecting center stroke and lower right corner". 2016 (most recent) AFA Specialized value DKK 250. An attractive example with the postmark clear of the variety.

99 [1920 8 øre gray Christian X] BLOCK OF FOUR, Used with F-VF centering, with crisp and attractive, well-centered 27 January 1921 "KJØBENHAVN / 9," single-ring cancellation. Because this stamp was issued specifically for the local post card rate, it was quite unusual for it to be used in multiples (at least not until at least several years later -- this block was used during the initial rate period). Canceled blocks of the King Christian X issue are seldom this attractive. The AFA 2017 (most recent edition) 4-Block Catalog lists this stamp in a canceled 4-block at DKK 250, however that is little more than four singles and it does not take into account when it was used; an early example, such as this one, is much scarcer. An exceptional example!

98 LIGHT YELLOW [1918 7 øre "orange to yellow" Christian X] Used with VF-XF centering and fully dated 25 October 1919 cancellation. (The "6-7..." in the cancel refers to 6-7 time block; the AM or PM indicator is not visible on this example.) Up to and including in the 1981-1982 AFA Specialized Catalog, this color was listed as AFA #98a and both Mint and Used examples were priced at approximately TEN TIMES the value of the normal range of orange colors. After that 1981-82, the listing was consolidated and #98a was dropped. However, this color does exist; it is not just a faded ink color. There is a space for this yellow color in many European-made albums. A very nice example of a scarce stamp, with a fully dated cancellation!

98 LIGHT YELLOW [1918 7 øre "orange to yellow" Christian X] Used with F-VF centering and a RINGKJØBING (11?) March 1919 cancellation. Up to and including in the 1981-1982 AFA Specialized Catalog, this color was listed as AFA #98a and both Mint and Used examples were priced at approximately TEN TIMES the value of the normal range of orange colors. After that 1981-82, the listing was consolidated and AFA #98a was dropped. However, this color does exist; it is not just a faded ink color. There is a space for this yellow color in many European-made albums. While the catalogs give the issue date for the first 7 øre stamp (orange, not yellow) as December 1918, the plate reference by Knud Juul states that stamps from the first 7 øre printing/plate were delivered 11 January 1919. There were 8 printings in 1919 and two more in 1920. I have not seen confirmation from which printing (plate number) this color comes, but I believe it to be from Print III (Plate #121-H, first delivery 8 March 1919) or Print IV (Plate #122-C, first delivery 22 March 1919). The DAY date of this cancellation could be 11 (March 1919), which fits with the first delivery (8 March) from Plate #121-H. This is the first MARCH-dated cancellation that I have observed. [I also have had examples of this color canceled in April and May; Print V was not delivered until 7 June.] The cancellation on this example is a little light, but is clearly "3. 19." (followed by the hours indicator). A very nice example of a scarce stamp!

98 PALE YELLOW-ORANGE [1918 7 øre "orange to yellow" Christian X] Used with XF centering and faint 1919 cancellation (that appears to be 22 January 1919, but I cannot be positive). Up to and including in the 1981-1982 AFA Specialized Catalog, the Light Yellow color was listed as AFA #98a and both Mint and Used examples were priced at approximately TEN TIMES the value of the normal range of orange colors. After that 1981-82, the listing was consolidated and #98a was dropped. Most collectors, never having actually seen the Light Yellow color, would likely consider this to be the Yellow color previously listed by AFA. This is a very reasonable substitute; regardless, this Pale Orange Yellow color is seldom offered. A very nice example of a scarce stamp!

116, Facit #150a, AFA #105 [1918 40 øre lilac and black Christian X] NH VF/F-VF upper left plate block #129-S. 128 Type II (wide R, long lines) [1922 1 kroner blue and brown Christian X, 1927 type] Mint, lightly hinged, with VF centering. Type II is Facit #161b, AFA #131 Type II. [Many people have difficulty sorting out the Type I and Type II, however there is a simple trick: There are three lines to the right of the R of KR; sometimes the top line looks more like a dot. In Type I, the bottom line extends to the left only under the lower right point of the R. In Type II, the bottom line extends all the way to the left to be under the left vertical edge of the right leg of the R.] Great color and wonderful freshness.

134 Dull Violet, AFA 110x [1920 5 kroner violet Christian X] Mint XF-Superb centered, very lightly hinged, with AFA-listed plate variety 110x: "wreath damaged in lower right quadrant, above the right 5", only from position 54 in the plate; AFA 2016 Specialized value DKK 800 for hinged with normal centering. This is the only AFA-listed plate variety for this stamp issue. It may look like a smudge in the image, but it is a very definite damage to the printing plate. This variety is very seldom offered and I have never in 46 years been able to offer an example this nice! Even normal examples of this stamp are scarce this well centered!
