Select Stamps - Scott #4-13: 1860-1875 "Serpentines"
Scott #4, LK Spacing, Deep Blue (Facit #3C1LK) [1860 5 kopek Serpentine, Roulette I] Used with VF appearance, looks like almost full teeth. Only one tooth missing and with very large margins on three sides and reasonable margin on the fourth side. There are a couple blunted teeth and a couple of the typical creased teeth. This example has Facit "LK" spacing between stamps (1.6 mm horizontally and 2.3 mm vertically). Even though only the horizontal distance (1.6 mm between stamps) can be measured on this example (in the right margin), both the top and bottom margins exceed 1.6 mm, thus this must have 2.3 mm distance vertically, thus this can only be LK spacing. Very attractive with remarkably deep color. Perfectly centered, but very light, TAMMERFORS 1865 "arc" style cancellation. A remarkably attractive example with great overall appearance. Examples of this stamp with such deep color are seldom offered.

Scott #4, K Spacing, Light Blue (Facit #3C1Kd) [1860 5 kopek Serpentine, Roulette I] Used with VF centering and FULL TEETH. The design is perfectly centered with small margins (excepted for K Spacing). This example has Facit "K" spacing between stamps (1.6 mm horizontally and 1.6 mm vertically). Even though measurement of the distance to the adjacent stamps is not possible because no adjacent framelines are present, the cancellation is dated 24 April 1864, which aligns with the Light Blue color of the Kd printing, and the small margins. Furthermore the LK Spacing was not distributed before 30 April 1864 and the L Spacing did not start until 5 September 1864, thus this can only be K spacing. Remarkably light color. Perfectly centered, with moderate "....FORS" 1864 "arc" style cancellation (which could be from HELSINGFORS or TAMMERFORS). There is an additional, typical, "x" (actually a double-x in one direction) manuscript cancellation that is not as neat as it could be. A nice example with good overall appearance. Facit 2024 value for FULL TEETH is SEK 1800.

Scott #5, L or LK Spacing, Carmine (Facit #4C1L or LK) [1860 10 kopek Serpentine, Roulette I] Used with F-VF centering, with a few short teeth (but the teeth are at least partially present). However, has large margins and a light town cancellation (plus the usual "x" manuscript cancel). This example probably has Facit L Spacing (2.3 mm horizontally and 2.3 mm vertically between the stamps), but it could also be LK Spacing. The bottom does show 2.3 mm spacing to the frameline of the stamp below it. The left margin is too close to show the spacing to the next stamp and the margin is smaller than 1.6 mm available to measure. However, the right margin is greater than 1.6 mm spacing, which suggests 2.3 mm spacing unless this is a right margin example. The bottom line is that the spacing cannot be definitively be determined. A very pleasing Carmine color. A very nice looking example at a great price.

Scott #5a Carmine Rose [1860 10 kopek Roulette II (1865)] Used with F-VF centering, large margins and ALMOST PERFECT LOOKING TEETH. There is one partially short tooth on the lower right side and there may be one tooth that is improved. There is a "microscopic" tear at the bottom near the right side -- it appears to have been caused by the pressure of striking the cancellation. There are a couple of typical, faint bends that are normal on this extremely thin paper. Neat ÅBO arc-style cancellation. An excellent looking example, far better than most. (Scott 2026 value $140.) This is a terrific-looking example of a stamp that is remarkably scarce. It is much scarcer than any of the catalogs suggest! This one is wonderful looking!

Scott #6b [1866 5 penni Roulette III (1871-1873), ORDINARY (Wove) PAPER] Mint NO GUM, with all teeth either short or missing. There are a couple of faint violet marks that make it look like it might be canceled, but those are ancient owners marks on the reverse that are showing through. Other than the marks and the teeth, there are no defects (no thins, creases, etc.). There are a couple partial teeth long enough to prove that this is NOT Roulette I. However, I cannot prove if this is Roulette II or III, but Roulette II would be a RARITY in Used condition and not even listed in Facit in Mint/Unused condition, thus I must assume it is the more common Roulette III. Even so, this stamp is "quite scarce" in Mint/Unused condition; in better quality it would sell for hundreds of dollars. Priced very low as an attractive space filler.

Scott #7 Green Paper, Facit #6v1C3 [1866 8 penni, Roulette III, Ordinary Green Paper (this paper -- not yellow green -- and roulette III produced 1867-1869) ] Used with Fine centering but much better overall appearance. Two shorter teeth, but also clipped teeth tips on right side. Extremely light cancellation. A very reasonable example at a very reasonable price.

Scott #8, Facit #7v3C3 [1866 (actually 1870 for this) 10 penni Ordinary STRAW-YELLOW Paper, Roulette III] Used with VF centering and very attractive, light, partial "arc" style cancellation. A few shorter teeth, but a remarkably nice example of a stamp that is hard to find with such nice appearance. While this is certainly not "full teeth", it is a very reasonable example at a great price. In my experience, in many collections, Scott #8 (scarcer, ordinary paper) and #13 (less scarce, laid paper) are mixed up, with a #13 (laid paper) in the place intended for #8 (ordinary paper).

Scott #12 Dark Lilac Brown on Pale Lilac LAID Paper, Facit #5v1C3a [1866 5 penni Laid Paper, Roulette III (this paper, color, and roulette 1867)] Mint, NO GUM, with Fine centering (typical for Mint / Unused examples of this stamp). Two teeth partially short (right side near top and bottom at left corner), but the initial impression is that this is a full-teeth stamp. Mint / Unused examples of this stamp are quite hard to find; with-gum examples are "very scarce". An attractive stamp in much better-than-usual quality. A nice example at a very attractive price.

13 [10p Laid Paper, Roulette III] Used with F-VF centering and unusual "squiggle" pen cancellation. A few short teeth at top -- typical for the Serpentine stamp issues -- but no other defects. The pen cancellation may be distinctive enough that it might be possible to determine where it was canceled; some of these pen cancellations can be traced to a specific postal clerk or postmaster. An attractive example; if it had 100% full teeth it would be around $300 but such examples are "rare".

Select Stamps - Scott #4-13: 1860-1875 "Serpentines" continued ...
13a [10p Laid Paper, Roulette II] Used with Fine centering and extremely light cancellation, but one pulled tooth on right side. Has the usual tooth problems, but on the right side, the teeth were not fully cut and thus the cuttings are removed (resulting in the pulled tooth as shown in the website image). The "pizza cutter" type of cutting wheel that was used was completely manually operated and required a lot of pressure -- when not enough pressure was applied, this incomplete cutting was the result. Overall a nice looking stamp, especially with such a light cancellation. If not for the one pulled tooth, this would be $70; if it had 100% full teeth it would be around $300 but such examples are "rare".
