152 [1921 25 mark M-17 Saarinen Lion, Watermark Posthorn] Used VF with cancellation of the proper type and appearance, but not showing the year date, thus cannot be proven to be timely use. Tip: The watermark on used examples of this stamp is always hard to see (I can see it, but some people might not), however, both watermarked stamps are Perf 14.25 x 14.75 (which this example is) whereas the unwatermarked stamp is Perf 14.

Scott #152 [1927 25 mk M-17 Saarinen Lion, Posthorn Watermark] Used with VF centering and fully-dated 15 May 1928 "HELSINKI (/ HELSINGFORS)" cancellation that is genuine and correct for the time period. [The "3" following the "28" year date is the time indicator, probably "3-6" as in 3-6 PM.] This high-denomination stamp was only available for sale from 21 December 1927 through 31 December 1930 -- the Saarinen Lion stamp design was invalidated for postage use starting 1 January 1931. While Mint examples of this stamp are "common" (though surprisingly hard to find), Used examples with a proper in-period cancellations are "very scarce" (Facit 2024 value SEK 1800!). However, fully-dated examples such as this can be described as "extremely scarce" or even "rare". So-called "Used" examples are regularly seen on the market, but is extremely unusual for them to include a clear year date, to say nothing of the complete date; the vast majority were canceled well after the normal period of use (conveniently not showing the year date). It has been a long time since I was last able to offer an example with a clear year date within the 1927-1930 period. Do not underestimate the scarcity of this correctly used stamp! Accompanied by a Jay Smith color-image certificate with lifetime guarantee.

This set is somewhat difficult to find in nice quality, especially with the proper stamp show cancellations (and not bogus cancels applied later to increase their value). Missing from many collections.

156 [1929 1-1/2 mark Turku Cathedral] Used with F-VF+ centering and neat "...llskylahti" straight-line "postal stopping place" cancellation. This type of cancellation was used at small places that did not have an actual full post office, but where a mail carrier or train would pick up and drop off mail. Such letters would later receive the dated postmark of the next town (or railway post office car) it transited that had a full post office. This style of cancellation is rare seen on commemorative stamps, especially this very early commemorative issue, because there was very little distribution of the early commemoratives beyond the full post offices. Quite unusual!
