Finland: Stamps: Scott 6-13 -- Serpentines
Scott numbers have been given for these listings. If you would prefer to examine the stamps before purchasing, or you are any seeking stamps (or any condition or any quality) not listed here, please send your want list using your choice of Scott or Facit numbers.
Unless there is a 6-digit item number in the left-most column, the images shown in this section are standard images of the issues from my image library; they are presented to show the designs of the stamp issues and not to show the specific individual stamps being offered. The centering of the stamps in the images is usually Superb or VF quality; again these are not images of the individual stamps being offered. Most early stamps had multiple printings, thus color shades vary greatly; the colors in the images are random printings/colors. If there is a 6-digit item number in the left-most column, the image is of the actual item being offered.
All the listed conditions and qualities were in stock at the moment this list was prepared and I endeavor to maintain them in stock and to keep this website updated. However, my stock changes daily and (to paraphrase) good stamps are hard to find. If you are willing to accept a different grade or quality if an item is temporarily out of stock, please let me know when ordering (add a comment at the conclusion of the shopping cart process) and please also let me know of any alternates you will consider. Furthermore, new stamps are being put in stock every day; if the quality and/or condition you are seeking is not listed, please send your want list.
Certain stamp issues have exceptional quality / centering criteria due to their method of production. For detailed descriptions of those criteria, see the following pages:
Scott #4-13: Serpentine Roulettes
Scott #17-24: 4-Numerals Perforation 11
Scott #46-82: Russian Designs
Scott #111-8: Vasa Lions
M-30 Lions: Scott #158-176I, 195-6, 212, 221-2, 243, 250, 257-62, 270-5, 291-6, 302-4, M2-3
The publication of this list is a "first effort" in quite a long time. It surely includes a few errors; I will be grateful if you would inform me of any errors. Stamps "missing" from the list simply might not be included because they are not in stock or are singles which are normally only listed in full sets. Just the same if it seems like something obvious (and not a single from a set) is missing, please let me know. If you can offer for sale items that are not listed here, please do so; I especially need sources of pre-1930 mint (hinged or never hinged) stamps and recent used complete sets. Prices are subject to typographical error and change, but I will do my best to honor the listed prices to the extent of available stock.

The stamps of Scott #4-13 have exceptional quality criteria and descriptions due to their method of production. Serpentine rouletting was done by hand and resulted in stamps of varying size and wildly varying centering. It is completely normal and acceptable for the roulette teeth to cut the design. In practical and realistic terms, the quality (VF, F-VF, etc.) is defined as a combination of overall appearance and the number of teeth missing. A repaired tooth is counted as a missing tooth since the repaired tooth can simply be removed. Other defects (than missing teeth) to the stamp must be described.

Full Teeth: Complete teeth without any short, clipped, missing, or repaired teeth. Such stamps are very scarce to rare. Most of the stamps offered in the general market as having "full teeth" do not in fact really have full teeth.
VF: One or two teeth missing, short, or repaired. Attractive appearance. Such quality is scarce.
F-VF: Three to five teeth missing, short, or repaired.
Fine: Six to nine teeth missing, short, or repaired.
Average: Ten or more teeth missing, short, or repaired.
SD (slight defect, usually not obvious from the front) refers to defects other than missing teeth. An "SD" stamp might in fact be a very attractive example only a couple short teeth, but has a hidden defect such as a pinhole or crease.

Scott #7, Facit #6v3C3 [1866 (this paper 1873-1875) 8 penni, Roulette III, Ordinary Yellow-Green Paper] Used, extremely well centered, with VF-XF overall appearance, with just a couple minor tooth problems. The bottom tooth on the left side is partially missing (but it is not noticeable) and two teeth have been expertly repaired. The overall all appearance is of "full teeth". There is a very neat single-thin-line pen cancel. This example is borderline into Roulette III; the bottom teeth may have been made with a different device (there was more than one device in use at the time and perhaps more than one person doing the work) and almost looks like the scarcer Roulette II at the bottom -- but it must be described as Roulette III. A very fresh and attractive example that is much nicer looking than most examples one encounters. (Scott 2025 value $160.)

Scott #10 [1866 40 penni, Roulette III, Stamp Type I (normal), Normal Paper] Used, with VF+ centering and VF overall appearance. This example has only one missing tooth, but has the usual creased teeth and a small pinhole (only visible from the reverse). Extremely light cancellations -- both black and blue. A nice looking example at a very low price. (Scott 2025 value $60.)

13 [10p Laid Paper, Roulette III] Used with F-VF centering and unusual "squiggle" pen cancellation. A few short teeth at top -- typical for the Serpentine stamp issues -- but no other defects. The pen cancellation may be distinctive enough that it might be possible to determine where it was canceled; some of these pen cancellations can be traced to a specific postal clerk or postmaster. An attractive example; if it had 100% full teeth it would be around $300 but such examples are "rare".

13a [10p Laid Paper, Roulette II] Used with F-VF centering and extremely light cancellation. Some of the usual short teeth. The teeth on the right side are not fully cut out particular (this stamp -- and many of the Roulette II of this denomination -- is on remarkably thick paper, thus much greater pressure was required to fully cut the teeth out). The "pizza cutter" type of cutting wheel that was used was completely manually operated and required a lot of pressure -- when not enough pressure was applied, this incomplete cutting was the result. A very nice looking stamp, especially with such a light cancellation. If this had 100% full teeth it would be around $300 but such examples are "rare".

13a [10p Laid Paper, Roulette II] Used with Fine centering and extremely light cancellation, but one pulled tooth on right side. Has the usual tooth problems, but on the right side, the teeth were not fully cut and thus the cuttings are removed (resulting in the pulled tooth as shown in the website image). The "pizza cutter" type of cutting wheel that was used was completely manually operated and required a lot of pressure -- when not enough pressure was applied, this incomplete cutting was the result. Overall a nice looking stamp, especially with such a light cancellation. If not for the one pulled tooth, this would be $70; if it had 100% full teeth it would be around $300 but such examples are "rare".
