Sweden: Bargains: Stamps - Scott #17-38

These bargain-priced stamps are attractive, but most have lesser centering or perhaps hidden flaws. You can save a tremendous amount of money when you add such stamps to your collection. Each stamp is one of a kind, so please let me know if I may substitute a different example (that looks as good or better, for the same cost) if the stamp you order has sold. If you have any doubts, all are available for approval viewing. This is just a small sampling, thus if you are seeking stamps of this quality and price level from any of the Scandinavian countries, just send along your want list -- I will be happy to send bargains on approval. Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise stated.

18 Gray [1876 4 öre Ringtype, Perf 14] Mint, original gum slightly disturbed (from hinge removal), with Fine+ centering, but tiny thin speck. Very fresh appearance, with perfect perforations, and excellent color. Unusual plate variety: Large white spot to left of "4". This is a very scarce stamp in Mint condition. From the Haggstrom collection. (Facit Classic 2024 SEK 4,500 with nothing added for the plate variety.)

18 [1872 4 öre Ringtype, Perf 14] Used with F-VF centering but one corner perforation expertly "improved" (very few people would be able to detect it even with magnification). A very attractive example at a great price. This centering would otherwise be $89.

19, Facit #19a Dull Bluish Green on Yellowish Paper [1872 5 öre Ringtype, Perf 14] Mint, original gum, with F-VF centering, but rounded lower right corner perforation. Very fresh appearance, otherwise excellent perforations, and great color. #19 is a scarce stamp in Mint condition though this particular color/printing does not carry a premium. From the Haggstrom collection. (Facit Classic 2024 SEK 3,200.)

20 (Dark) Violet [1872 6 öre Ringtype, Perf 14] Used with F-VF centering and neat cancellation, but with a tiny tear between two perforation teeth (you will need a magnifying glass to see it). This is a very striking, dark color, but it is not the "dark violet" which is much deeper. However, in my opinion, it is too dark to call "dark lilac". A very attractive stamp at a great price.

20a, Facit #20b Ultramarinish Violet on Yellowish Paper [1872 6 öre violet Ringtype, Perf 14] Mint, original gum, with Fine+ centering, but with tiny bend (appears to be pre-printing) and small natural paper inclusion. Very fresh appearance, with perfect perforations, and excellent color. This color exists on both yellowish and white paper (Facit #20b vs #20c); this the least costly printing of dark violet. This is a scarce stamp in Mint condition though this particular color/printing does not carry a premium. From the Haggstrom collection. (Facit Classic 2024 SEK 3,500.)

21 SILVER GRAY [1872 6 öre Ringtype, Perf 14] Used with Average centering and very well centered SÖDERTELJE 4 September 1874 cancel. Very pretty and with unusually nice color for this printing. Other than the centering, this is a remarkable example. If this stamp had F-VF centering, it would easily fetch $150!

23b DOUBLE PRINT [1876 20 öre Ringtype, Perf 14; originally printed in pale yellow and then printed again in shades of orange-red. The original print is ALWAYS extremely difficult to see.] Used Average. Original print slightly below and to the right of darker print.

27, Facit #27d Orange Brown and Blue [1872 1 rd orange-brown and blue Ringtype, Perf 14] Mint, regummed, with F-VF centering. Perfect perforations and excellent color. The 1 riksdaler stamp is very scarce in Mint condition regardless of the particular color/printing and even regardless of the gum condition; no-gum examples are scarce too! From the Haggstrom collection. (Facit Classic 2024 SEK 12,000 for original gum.)

32 Medium Blue [1877 12 öre Ringtype, Perf 13] Mint (actually has never been hinged) with Fine centering, but has small thin and creased at lower left. Otherwise very fresh with attractive. Interesting plate variety with eroded right side of central circle. The hand-mixed and hand-applied gum of the different printings varies greatly in appearance, thickness, and how it air-dried as the sheets were laid out to dry; this example has thick, partly crackly, naturally yellowish gum with thicker areas. This would otherwise be $69 for NH in this centering.

35 [1877 30 öre Ringtype, Perf 13] Mint with F-VF centering, but without gum. 2012 Facit with-gum value SEK 3700 = $560 [10/2012]. Very fresh and attractive appearance. Great price.

37 [1877 1 RIKSDALER Perforation 13 Ringtype] Used with Average centering, heavily repaired. Somebody did a lot of work on this stamp, not all of it very smart, but the result looks nice. The left side has genuine 13 perforations, thus this has to be a Scott #37. However, the top has been slightly reperforated/improved 13. But the right side is perforated 14. The bottom must have been completely missing because part of a perforation 14 stamp was very expertly joined to it -- this makes no sense because the "doctor" should have transplanted on from a perforation 13 stamp. The cancellation date of 1878 is correct and appropriate for Scott #37. An example with this centering, but without the doctoring, would sell for about $170. This example is offered for a small fraction of that figure.

38 Light Blue Center [1877 1 Krona Perforation 13 Ringtype, Without Posthorn On Back] Mint with F-VF centering but without gum and paper is slightly aged. Facit 2024 value for normal mint hinged quality is SEK 5500 = about $550! A nice looking example at a very low price.
