| 3. Secret Denmark Cold War Emergency Stamps |

In 1963, at the height of the Cold War, the Danish Post Office, working with civil defense authorities, created a secret "Emergency Stamp" (Nødfrimærke) that was for use in the event of a major crisis, such as a nuclear war. Approximately 200,000,000 of the the stamps were crudely printed in secret and placed in sealed packages at 8 post offices (and perhaps also in secret civil defense caches) around the country where their nature and purpose remained a secret, even from the postmasters. With the stamps, printing plates were stored so that more stamps could eventually be locally printed.
In 1991 it was decided that these stamps were no longer needed. The stamps were made available to Danmarks Filatelist Forbund (DFF), the Danish Philatelic Federation, for sale to support DFF work and the Danish Postal Museum. The stamps were only sold between 14 March and 31 December 1991. Only 150,000 of the stamps were sold; all remaining supplies were destroyed. The stamps were supplied to the DFF only in blocks of 10 (2 rows of 5 stamps) -- this is the largest size unit that can theoretically exist in private hands. [But it seems that even these blocks have since mostly been broken down into smaller blocks and singles.] When sold, the stamps were accompanied by a small folder illustrating a 4-block on the cover and providing background information. Folders versions exist with (at least) text in Danish and German. [The folders are now scarce.]
Because the stamps were printed secretly and thus it was not possible to use all the usual printing facilities and equipment, the stamps were crudely printed by letterpress (typography). The paper has invisible gum (to reduce the possibility of sticking while in storage under poor conditions). They usually have rough perforations (this is not a defect). The centering is highly variable; Fine or F-VF is normal, whereas VF or better is quite scarce! Within a 10-block the centering will vary; I cannot recall ever having a 10-block in which all 10 stamps were VF.

#731290 Bulgaria Mint Postal Stationery Collection 1879-1931
A surprisingly complete and attractive collection of 47 early Mint Bulgarian single and double postal cards 1879-1931, with emphasis on the earlier issues. With a couple inconsequential exceptions, condition is at least F-VF with the remarkable majority fresh and VF. Cataloged by Michel 2004-5 Eastern Europe postal stationery catalog as follows: P1-7, P8a-b, P9a-b, B12I-II, P13aA-B, P13bA-B, P14, P15aA-B, B15bB, P16, B19-24, P26, P28, P29 (2 color shades), P30-1, P34a-b, P52, P54, P56a-b, P57a, P61, K1, K2 (2 color shades), K6, and K7. If there was any doubt about type or color, I used the lowest possible value. Total Michel value of 215.50 Euros = $290! This is very unusual material; it would be quite a challenge to assemble a collection this large. $174.00

#731291 Eastern Rumelia (South Bulgaria) Mint Postal Stationery Collection 1881-1885
A fascinating and large (for this area) collection of 16 early Mint Eastern Rumelia (South Bulgaria) single and double postal cards 1881-85. These interesting cards actually bear officially applied stamps. With one exception (P13a card with tear, but stamp not damaged), condition is uniformly VF. (The prior owner spent many years searching these out and he was very fussy about quality.) Cataloged by Michel 2004-5 Eastern Europe postal stationery catalog as follows: P1-9, P9 DOUBLE CARD NOT LISTED BY MICHEL!!!!, P10a-b, P11a, P13a, P14a, and P17I. For valuation purposes, these cards are divided into two groups. P2-9 do NOT have any problems with possible forgeries; their Michel value is 102 Euros = $137, PLUS the value of the UNLISTED P9 Double Card! The P10-17 cards are known to exist with forged stamp security overprints; they are probably much less likely to be forged on postal cards, but I am not expert on these and have to offer them as-is. The Michel value of this second part is 295 Euro = $398! Thus total value as much as $535 PLUS the unlisted card (which itself could be quite valuable). This is an extremely unusual offering; such cards are seldom seen and certainly not in such nice quality. $250.00

#731300 Japan 1955-1994 NH VF Virtually Complete Collection
A beautiful and virtually complete collection of these attractive (and usually quite artistic and historical) stamps from 1955 through 1994. Handsomely presented in black Showgard mounts on fresh and clean White Ace pages. Housed in three binders, two of which are like-new Japan-imprinted White Ace binders. Condition is uniformly NH and VF; we only noticed five stamps that were not NH VF. In Japan proper we only noted 9 stamps missing; in the Prefecture stamps, #Z23-69 were not present, but they are inexpensive. The 2007 Scott value is $2063! This is by far the freshest, nicest, most complete modern-era Japan collection I have had in 34 years! $775.00

Subjects include: pre-stamp postmarks, stamps up to 1940 and definitive stamps thereafter, varieties and specialized listings, pricing for various types of cancellations (numerals, stars, etc.) on stamp and on cover for different early stamp issues, coil stamps, advertising pairs, L-number plate blocks, etc., etc. Other countries not as specialized, but still very useful. #731304 Facit Swedish Cancellation And Postal History Catalog 1985
(Facit Ortstämplerkatalog Postal History 1985) An older edition (latest 2004 edition is in stock for $69.50), but still very useful for those starting out in collecting Swedish cancels. Lists and prices cancellations and postmarks from the pre-stamp era, through the modern types, with pricing for each era. Also lists ship, railway, rural letter carriers, postal agencies, foreign cancellations on Swedish stamps, etc., etc. In its day, this book was considered to be an incredibly great reference. While you will eventually wish to have the 2004 edition, this book is a great way to get started with Swedish cancels. If you just collect used Swedish stamps or have only a passing interest in postmarks, you will still want this book; just one "find" will pay for it many times over! (Facit Frimärkskort Europa Stamp Cards 1985) The first, last, and only edition of this very useful catalog. Lists, pictures IN COLOR, and prices stamp cards of Sweden, Scandinavia, and the rest of Europe (Europe, not "Europa" organization). Stamp cards are post office officially printed picture post cards that picture stamps or extremely closely related images of stamps. The British call them PHQ cards. They are NOT valid for postage themselves (that would be postal stationery postal cards). About 40% of the catalog is of Swedish stamp cards (many of which picture SLANIA stamps) and is the best priced listing of this type up to that time. New copy, but with front cover slightly damaged in shipping. $5.50
