Denmark: Bargains: Scott #35-56
These bargain-priced stamps are attractive, but many have described hidden flaws. You can save a tremendous amount of money when you add such stamps to your collection. Each stamp is one of a kind, so please let me know if I may substitute a different example (that looks as good or better, for the same cost) if the stamp you order has sold. If you have any doubts, all are available for approval viewing. If you are seeking stamps of this quality and price level from any of the Scandinavian countries, just send along your want list -- I will be happy to send bargains on approval. Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise stated.

39c PAIR Containing Scott #39a. Facit #51v2, AFA #35x [1885 (Print 6, 1888) 10 øre Arms with SMALL Corner Numerals, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint hinged with Just-Fine centering. Original gum, slightly disturbed, with hinge remnant in place to help stabilize the pair. Horizontal PAIR of Scott #39 and #39a (thus Scott #39c pair). The #39a, small corner numerals stamp, is on the right, and is from plate position 96. This pair is INTACT, but with some perforation separation, with the remaining intact perforations reinforced by a hinge remnant. This error came about when three reserve cliches from the 1882 postal card issue were accidentally placed among the cliches for printing stamps. The three error cliches exist from sheet positions 94, 96, and 97, all only in Printing 6. The three positions can be discerned by small details in the printing impression and by the small irregularities in the perforation teeth. The crisp paper and the fine, large-hole perforations result in pairs / multiples being fragile, with the consequence that most pairs have fallen apart many a very long time ago. Interestingly, Scott and AFA list this stamp as varieties of the large corner numeral issues, however Facit lists it with the 5 and 20 øre small corner numeral stamps (Scott #35 and 37). Due to the plate layout vs the cliche size, and how the printers registered the perforations (selected a place on the sheet where the stamps would be well centered), the bottom row -- where all these come from -- is virtually always only Fine centered or worse. This example is Just Fine centered, which is actually typical for this item. The perforations of the left stamp (normal 39) barely clear the design, but the right stamp (the 39a variety) is Fine with perforations completely clearing the design. A "rare" item that is missing from virtually all collections of Denmark. Facit 2024 value SEK 5000 (about $500 10/2023); AFA 2023 value is DKK 4000 (about $600 10/2023); and Scott 2023 value is $600. This pair is much scarcer than those catalog values would suggest. Accompanied by a Jay Smith certificate with "lifetime" guarantee.

Scott #41d, AFA #22Cy, Facit #38bb. INVERTED FRAME from Printing 24 from Positions 91-100. [1902 3 øre Bicolor, Perforation 12.75, Large Crown Watermark] Used with Fine centering and neat November 1904 bridge-style town cancellation. This example has the lighter color frame and oval, with smooth print, of Printing 24. The inverted frame on this watermark only exists from positions 51 and 91-100 of printings 22-25; the colors of Printings 22 and 25 are darker; Printing 23 has light colors, but a vertically-lined texture to the print. The position 91-100 inverted frame stamps from all four printings have the same value. A completely sound example, at a great price, of a stamp that is quite hard to find in such nice quality.

Scott #50c INVERTED FRAME, Printing 11 from Positions 91-100. Facit #43bb, AFA #29Cy [1903 25 øre Bicolor Perf 12.75, Large Watermark] Used with Fine centering, with fully dated 12 April 1911 cancellation that still clearly shows the upper left corner thus clearly showing the inverted frame. One small discolored spot on top center perforation (mostly hidden by the cancellation). For the 25 øre with this watermark, two printings can have inverted frames, the printing 10 with emerald oval and THIS Printing 11 with a more yellow-green oval. Both printings exist with isolated inverted frames in position 51 (with different identifiable oval characteristics), and in positions 91-100 (of which this example is one). Though this is the lowest catalog value stamp in the "Bicolor Large Watermark Inverted Frame" group, it is surprisingly difficult to find, especially at such a low price. From the J.A. Farrington Bicolor Collection and with Lasse Nielsen identification tag in his handwriting. Lasse Nielsen was the premier bicolor expert and author of the bicolor handbook.
