Norway: Specialized Stamps: Bouvet Oya Stamps
Five values of Norwegian stamps overprinted "BOUVET OYA" (Bouvet Island) in 1934 by the visiting Milford Expedition. Located in Antarctic waters, the uninhabited island was annexed to Norway on 23 January 1928. Quantities overprinted range from 100 to 1000 each. I have these stamps (mint, used, or on cover) are available from time to time even if not listed here; please send your want list.
[Information from Facit Scandinavia Specialized Catalog 2007] Bouvet Island was discovered in 1739 by Frenchman Bouvet. The 1934 Milford Expedition to Antarctic regions obtained permission from the Norwegian Consul in Cape Town, South Africa, to overprint Norwegian stamps for mail sent by expedition members and the crew of the ship; the Consul supplied the stamps to the expedition. The stamps received a handstamped overprint in black, with the following quantities: 5 øre 400 (of which 268 were used on mail); 7 øre 100 (69 used); 10 øre 1000 (305 used); 20 øre 800 (261 used); and 30 øre 400 (243 used). Upon return of the expedition to Cape Town, the letters were canceled "CAPE TOWN PAQUEBOT" and forwarded on in the usual way. The Norwegian government in Oslo, upon learning of the overprints, refused to recognize the overprinted stamps, thus they have a semi-official status though they did serve on letters that were accepted in international mails.

Bouvet Oya overprint on 10 øre Lion. NH VF, terrific quality. Bouvet Oya (Bouvet Island), in the Antarctic Ocean, was annexed to Norway on 23 January 1928. The Milford Expedition visited Bouvet Oya in 1934. A set of five overprints were produced aboard ship, on stamps supplied by and with the permission of the Norwegian Consul in Cape Town, South Africa. The Norwegian government in Oslo retroactively denied permission after the stamps had been produced and letters mailed. A significant number of the stamps produced were actually used to mail letters -- I have sold a few examples of such mail -- thus rather few remain in mint condition. Only 1000 examples of the 10 øre were overprinted; 305 were recorded used, thus no more than 695 may still exist in mint condition.
