Scott #1 [1847 5c Red Brown Franklin] Used VF+ with very large, even margins and very neat, very light red grid cancellation. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation GRADED certificate stating that it is genuine and giving it a grade of "VF 80". Why this stamp "only" received an "VF 80" grade I do not understand -- it is really super nice and far better than most VF examples offered.

Scott #1 [1847 5c Red Brown Franklin] Used VF PAIR, very large margins all around, with bold blue grid cancellations. Left stamp with very faint additional red cancel. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that it is genuine, but that the right stamp has a vertical crease. No other defects. I suspect that 98% of collectors or dealers carefully examining this pair would NOT have found the crease -- it is extremely faint -- only just a faint bend really -- but it must be mentioned for complete accuracy! Very attractive and colorful. Nice large-margin pairs are not often seen. (Scott 2017 $850 for a pair, plus $50 per stamp for the blue cancellations.)

Scott #1 [1847 5c Red Brown Franklin] Deep Red Brown shade (per certificate), Used VF with large margins, one fully clear and three very large. Crisp, neat, light red grid cancellation. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that it is genuine. No defects. This is a superior example, with a very attractive postmark, a far better example than usually seen.

Scott #1 [1847 5c Red Brown Franklin] Used VF with large to very large margins and neat, light red grid cancellation. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that it is genuine, but that "manuscript offset on the back shows faintly through to the front, across Franklins forehead." The "offset" is from writing on the envelope upon which the stamp was placed. The show-through is extremely faint and is only seen if the stamp is set on white background -- if it is a black mount, for example, you simply cannot see any show-through. No defects. A very handsome example, with a very attractive postmark!

Scott #1 [1847 5c Red Brown Franklin] Used Fine appearance with two large margins, one closer, one just touching. Well-centered red grid cancellation. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that it is genuine, but that it has been "cleaned, significantly affecting color, and with tiny nick at upper left." No other defects. In my opinion, something has affected the color (making it darker), but if there was cleaning in an attempt to remove the cancel, the cancel was unaffected. The so-called "nick" is out in the margin and could be simply cut off, still leaving a full margin. (Scott 2017 value $375.) Very low price for a #1!

Scott #1 [1847 5c Red Brown Franklin] Used VF appearance with four full to large margins. Neat, light red grid cancellation. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation "WARNING STATEMENT" certificate stating that "It is a used Scott 1, the stamp cleaned to remove a manuscript cancel, affecting color." No other defects. While the color may have been affected according to the PF, the color seems, to me, to be within the range of color shades of several others I have in stock with "good" certificates. Without a deep study of the stamp, one would not know about the problem. With the light red cancel and full margins, this is a nice looking stamp! (Scott 2017 value $375.) Very low price for a #1!

Scott #1b [1847 5c Orange Brown Franklin] VF, with four full margins, three of which are large, on folded letter with very neat red grid cancellation that ties the stamp to the folded letter. Attractive red "CUYAHOGA FALLS O." (Ohio) May 14 (4 is in manuscript) postmark. To Bucyrus, Cranford County, Ohio. Accompanied by 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that the stamp is tied and that the use is genuine. No defects. The letter discusses insurance matters. This attractive example would sell for about as much off cover! (Scott 2017 $850 for on-cover and $750 off cover.)

Scott #1a [1847 5c Dark Brown Franklin] The much scarce Dark Brown color. Used VF+ with very large, even margins and very neat, very light red grid cancellation. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that it is genuine, but that it is "lightly soiled". No defects. Though under normal viewing the stamp looks typical, under 10x magnification, I can see what the certificate refers to; however it looks to me like it could just as easily be a little excess printing ink as anything else. Quite attractive and seldom offered. (Scott 2017 value $800!) Very reasonably priced at less than half Scott!

Scott #1b [1847 5c Orange Brown Franklin] The scarcer Orange Brown color. Used F-VF+ with three large margins and one closer. Blue grid and pen cancellations. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that it is genuine, but "with small creases". (I can find one "crease" that is out in the margin and could actually be cut off, but that is it.) No other defects. Very affordable because of the additional pen cancel. (Scott 2017 value $750 for a normally canceled stamp, plus a small premium for a blue cancel; however, less, but not specified, for a pen canceled #1b stamp.)

Scott #1d [1847 5c Brown Orange Franklin] The scarce Brown Orange color. Used F-VF+ with three full to very large margins and one just touching. Bold blue grid cancellation. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that it is genuine. No defects. This is quite a scarce color that really needs to be confirmed with a certificate. Wonderful bright color with the strongly contrasting blue cancel. (Scott 2017 value $1000 for a normally canceled stamp, plus a small premium for a blue cancel.)

Very neat, light red grid cancellation. Accompanied by a 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that it is genuine. No defects. Scott #2 [1847 10c Black Washington] F-VF, top sheet margin example, with huge margin at top, large margin at bottom, just barely touching at right, and in at left. On folded cover to Philadelphia, tied by red 7-bar grid cancellation, with red "U.S. [EXPRESS M]AIL [B]OST[ON] Mass. FEB 7" side dated postmark. There is an additional blue manuscript "10 Due" marking. Accompanied by 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that the stamp is tied and that the use is genuine; the PF declined to opine on where the "10 Due" was applied. No defects. This first issue stamp is not often available on cover, especially an "Express Mail" cover. (The Scott 2017 value is $1050 for on-cover and $825 off cover; and also gives an on-cover addition of $500 for the Express Mail postmark, for a total value of $1550.) Very reasonably priced at just under half catalog value!
