Scott #65 MISSING BACKGROUND / UNDERPRINT, Facit / Lape #50 Variety [1901 5p Russian Arms, Lithographed, Narrow Frame Line Gap] A MAJOR VARIETY, RARELY OFFERED, LISTED IN THE LAPE SPECIALIZED CATALOG. Used F-VF with three large margins and one close margin, with neat MIKKELI July 1901 cancellation. Faint bend/crease, however, many stamps from the early printings have pre-printing bends/creases due to the poor quality of paper used in those printings. The lithographed issue was "hastily prepared" under difficult conditions, due to the changed requirement that Russian-design stamps (or actual Russian stamps) had to be used in Finland on/after 14 January 1901. As with other stamps of this type, the foreground and background (or underprint) were printed in two operations, as an anti-counterfeiting measure. The Tilgmann company in Helsinki was pressed into service to produce these stamps, though stamp printing was not their area of expertise. As a result, there were many production problems. As stated in the LAPE Specialized Catalog 2012, "The underprint in penni-value stamps is often deficient. 5 penni and 10 penni stamps with no underprint [background] are also known." In 2012 Lape valued the missing background / underprint at 85 Euro, but it is very rarely offered and has a much higher actual market value. This lithographed stamp (Facit / Lape #50) can be confused with the typographed version (Facit / Lape #48), produced from "unauthorized plates" two weeks earlier, though the color shade is usually different. Though in different circumstances, it is usually not difficult to differentiate between lithographed and typographed stamps, in this case, because of the plates and printing conditions, these lithographed stamps can look typographed (with blobby framelines, etc.). However, appearance of this stamp exactly matches the type illustration in the Lape Specialized Catalog 2012. [Because the Tilgmann-printed stamps, stated to be lithographed in the literature, can look so much like typographed stamps, I have wondered if Tilgmann actually owned or used a lithographic press at the time the 5 penni stamps (Scott #65) were printed -- they did own a typographic press which was used to print the 10 mark Scott #69.] Facit does not list this variety or many of the other varieties that exist in the Russian-design stamps. I have examined this stamp carefully at high magnification, including under short-wave and long-wave UV light, and I do not detect any presence of background / underprint printing. At your own cost, you are quite welcome to send this stamp to the expertizer of your choice for their examination -- if you receive a different opinion about the missing background I will fully refund the price of the stamp. However, having seen thousands of stamps of this printing, I am very confident of my description of this item. This is the only example I have had in 52 years that has a missing background / underprint.
