Scott #163 COIL PASTE-UP PAIR WITH NUMBER "023" IMPRINT [1930 50 penni yellow M-30 Lion] NEVER HINGED with SUPERB CENTERING. An extraordinarily fresh and bright paste-up pair with truly exceptional centering. Though this coil stamp is only shown in the specialized catalogs with fairly modest catalog value -- because so few collectors know they exist -- examples this nice are "rare". Though I do not have images of the very few examples that I have had been able to offer over the last 53 years, I am "quite sure" that this must be the nicest example that I have ever been able to offer. Coil stamps exist for the 10 penni Violet, 50 penni Yellow, and 1 mark Orange stamps of this "M30" issue; they are listed in the specialized catalogs for Finland. The Facit Classic 2024 states: "In 1930-1932 there were Swiss-made slot-machines [coin operated dispensers] with four coin inlets [for different coin denominations] for stamp coils in use in Helsingfors/Helsinki and Åbo/Turku. The stamp rolls were produced from ordinary sheets of 100 stamps, which were divided vertically to strips of 10. 100 such strips were joined [using one of the sheet margins] to make one coil of 1000 stamps. On each joint between the strips (on [the] reverse) there was printed a 3-digit number between 001 and 100 Coils without [the printed] numbers also exist." The number imprints were to assist the postal staff in determining, for inventory purposes, how many stamps remained on the roll. These paste-up pairs are seldom offered in any condition or quality and thus few collectors even know that they exist! The price of this example may seem high compared to the catalog values, but the quality is even higher!

The upper right stamp has an inconsequential rounded corner perforation tooth. This stamp is "scarce" even as single stamps (this quality sells for $75 each), but it is "rare" in Used blocks.
