Scott #278 4-block, 288, 297 [1953 10 aur Manuscript; 1955 1.25 kr Diver; and 2.30 kr Telegraph - Telephone] (VF) on 3 October 1956 surface, registered cover to Los Angeles, California, U.S., sent by the post office. Excellent REYKJAVIK bridge cancellation Type B5c. Receiving postmarks on the reverse are dated October 12, 1956. The 3.95 total postage appears to include a 20 aur convenience overpayment. 1.75 surface letter rate to all countries outside Scandinavia [1 October 1953 - 30 June 1958] and 2.00 registration fee [1 May 1950 - 30 June 1958]. The Scott #297 is remarkably hard to find on a postally used cover; the Facit Norden 2022 value is SEK on cover, but it seems to be even scarcer than that.

Scott #278 x3, 279 x3, 280, 281 [1953 10 and 70 air, 1.00 and 1.75 kr Old Manuscripts, Bible, Saga] (VF) on 24 October 1983 AIRMAIL REGISTERED cover from the postal headquarters in REYKJAVIK to the U.S., with receiver. Slight wear at the top edge which is typical on covers from this sender because their envelopes were slightly taller than typical. The total franking of 5.15 kr which correctly pays the 3.15 kr 5-10 gram (2nd weight level) airmail letter rate to the U.S. (1 Oct 1953 - 30 June 1958) and the 2.00 registry fee (1 May 1950 - 30 June 1958). The stamps were issued on 1 October 1953, thus this is a very timely use. In this time period, exactly correct frankings of airmail letters is a bit unusual (often there is a convenience overpayment) and the SAME-SET combination of stamps is remarkably unusual. This cover is a "bottom of bundle" cover -- the backside has some soiling which naturally occurs on the backsides of the covers that were on the bottoms of bundles. Interesting and attractive; also with tremendous topical appeal!

281 [1953 1.75 kr Old Manuscripts] (F-VF) solo use on 25 March 1955 airmail picture postcard with "KEFLAVIK / FLUGVÖLLUR" bridge cancellation, to the U.S. The 1.75 kr franking is a 5 aur convenience overpayment of the 1.70 kr rate -- there was never a 1.70 kr stamp in this rate period. The total 170 aur postal rate is the surface world (outside Scandinavia) postcard rate (100 aur) plus the minimum airmail surcharge amount (70 aur); 1 October 1953 - 30 June 1958 inclusive. Locally published postcard picturing Þórsmörk above the Krossá river. Minor wear at top of card. Surprisingly scarce solo use of this stamp, though a small convenience overpayment, this was typically how this rate was actually paid. This cancellation device is especially interesting to collectors of bridge cancellations: It has no lower bridge line; similar to type B5 which has no upper bridge line, but to my knowledge a type number has not been assigned to this one with no lower bridge line. However, Þorsteins in his 2003 bridge cancels book lumped this cancel into type B6; it seems to be the only such postmark with no lower bridge line (in that catalog the cancel is valued at 10 Euro.

Excellent REYKJAVIK bridge cancellation Type B5c. Receiving postmarks on the reverse are dated April 17, 1959. The 5.25 total postage exactly pays the postal rates: 2.25 surface letter rate (0-20 grams) to all countries outside Scandinavia [1 July 1958 - 28 February 1960] and 3.00 registration fee [1 July 1958 - 31 August 1961]. These two stamps are surprisingly infrequently seen on postally used covers.
