In 1936, a Swedish-Icelandic Expedition spent a few weeks in May and June on the glacier and established a very short-lived post office that had an official postal cancellation and even sent registered mail. The postmark was apparently used only for that short time in May-June 1936 and is scarce. Subsequent expeditions took place in the summers of 1937 and 1938 but I have never seen any postal evidence from those years. I am interested in buying expedition items from this era.
From 1959 to 1964 annual research expeditions on the Vatnajökull Glacier were undertaken by the Icelandic Glacialogical Society (IGS). This glacier covers one-thirteenth of the total area of Iceland and is the largest glacier in the world between the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, with the exception of southern Greenland. The total area is approximately 3200 square miles and the highest peak is 6950 feet. Active volcanos under the glacier cause massive under-glacier lakes which can periodically discharge causing catastrophic flooding. During these expeditions, temporary postal service was maintained at Grimsfjall on a "1300 feet high precipitous crater rim, 5600 feet above sea level." The expedition "post office" had its own bridge-type cancellation and pre-printed registry labels. In 1963, the IGS stated that annually, from 1959-1963, 5000 cacheted covers were created. The cachet is different each year. Despite the quantity issued, these covers are very hard to find, with 1964 items being the scarcest. As of 1/2012, I have only had one item (non-postal) from a 1965 expedition. I am interested in buying items from the 1959-1965 expedition period.

1936 VATNAJØKULL Swedish-Icelandic Glacier Expedition official cacheted cover dated 14 June 1936, bearing a 4-block of the 5 aur 1935 Matthias Jochumsson issue (Scott #196), to Reykjavik. Vertical fold in center of cover; not obvious, well away from the stamps, cancels, and cachet. The bridge postmark handbook indicates that this postmark was used 1936-1938. The "post office" was operated by the expedition members and the postmark was used only during the short expeditions (summers only); the 1937 and 1938 expeditions were shorter with far fewer members. I do not recall ever seeing an example of the postmark used in 1937 or 1938. A wonderful example; one of only four expedition covers I have had in 44 years.
