THE ULTIMATE TIED CHRISTMAS SEAL COVER? December 18 1948 registered airmail cover mailed with "KEFLAVIK / FLUGVÖLLUR" (Keflavik Airport) cancellation (part on front and dated portion on reverse of cover) to the U.S.. bearing a blank registered label with large boxed "KEFLAVIK / FLUGVÖLLUR" handstamp. The reverse bears a receiver: "NEW YORK, N.Y. / A.M.F. TOUR ?" December 22 1948 (the tour /shift number is present but not readable). Franked with Scott #227 on front [1943 50 aur Fish (had printings into 1948)] (Fine) and #C25 on reverse [1947 2 kr Airmail] (VF). This 250 aur franking is a typical convenience overpayment of the total rate of 245 aur: The all-in airmail rate 15 November 1949 through 20 March 1950 was 185 aur for 10 grams; the registration fee was 60 aur. That is all very nice, but the real story is the presence of THIRTY (30) DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS SEALS, completely filling both sides of the envelope! Some of the seals are tied to the cover by postmarks and/or the registration label / handstamp and/or are under the postage stamps and/or are under other seals that are tied. Even though that tying only accounts for about half of the seals, I do not think there can be any doubt that all the seals were present when the cover was mailed! The seals that are PRESENT are 1919-1948 complete! (That means the only National seals missing from the start through 1948 are 1913-1918, which were probably already quite hard to find by 1948.) It should not be necessary to say much more -- this is an incredible, and incredibly rare, piece of Icelandic Christmas Seal postal history. Some of the early seals on this cover would easily fetch $200-300 (or more) if alone tied on a cover; any of them would fetch at least $100 tied alone on cover. A very special item for the person who appreciates the rarest of the rare!
