45 [1902 5 aur Perf 12.75 with Red I GILDI overprint] Mint Hinged with F-VF+ centering. Unlisted (by AFA) plate variety -- but listed by Regeling as Cliche Variety C5 -- "Dented-in upper right corner". This variety exists in all normal printings of the 5 aur stamp. The underlying stamps were printed in four quarters with a 25-subject plate, thus this variety occurs four times in the sheet. Each time the plate was disassembled for cleaning and reassembled, this variety ended up in a different position. There were three printings (Regeling 6, 7, and 8) of this perforation; this variety can thus exist from PLATE (not sheet) positions 21, 35, and 11 respectively (thus SHEET positions: Regeling Print 6: 21, 26, 71, 76. Print 7: 35, 40, 85, 90. Print 8: 11, 61, 66.). It is surprising that the AFA Specialized Catalog does not list this very obvious variety -- they list many similar varieties on other Numeral stamps. When AFA does list such a variety, Mint Hinged is assigned a value of DKK 200-250 (6/2024 US$ $30-$37) for the underlying stamp (AFA does not list the plate varieties at all for the overprinted stamps). 50 Full Sheet, Overprint Setting I, with plate varieties: AFA 1997 Specialized #23B with all four of the AFA-listed plate varieties (on underlying AFA #22) [1902 "I GILDI" black overprint on 3 aur Large Numeral, perforation 12.75] NH with centering varying from Superb to Fine as usual. Especially nice about such a sheet is that the four types of the I GILDI overprint (thickness of the zeros: thin-thin, thin-thick, thick-thin, thick-thick) is represented in TWO 4-STRIPS (positions 34-37 and 84-87) and TWO 4-BLOCKS (15-16/25-26 and 65-66/75-76). These highly significant 4-strips and 4-blocks containing all four overprint types have really only recently started to come to the attention of collectors. This was the only single-color "oval" issue for which the underlying stamps were printed in a single pass through the press, using a 100-subject plate (instead of a 25-subject plate, printed four times). Thus each of the underlying plate varieties only exist from one position in the sheet (making them scarcer than plate varieties from the 25-subject plates). The four varieties are (per AFA): "x" Sheet Position 17 "Defective R of POSTFRIM"; "y" Sheet Position 4 "color spot on M of POSTFRIM"; "z" Sheet Position 53 "Upper frame line cut off, becoming thinner toward left side"; and "æ" Sheet Position 16 "Color spot in A of ISLAND". The overprinting shows a horizontal and vertical shift between rows five and six, demonstrating that the overprinting was done in two operations, 50 stamps at a time. On the unoverprinted stamps, AFA values the varieties at 9 to 10 times the normal value! Wonderful quality! Very fresh and attractive; strong perforations, NO separations and NO creases. Priced well below the break up value of the listed varieties and stamps. ACTUAL item. |

51 [1902 "I GILDI" black overprint on 4 aur Numeral, Perforation 12.75] Used with F-VF+ centering and neat, partial (S)KAGAS(TRÖND) CROWN AND POSTHORN CANCELLATION. There is only one possible postmark for the letters showing in this cancellation. This postmark on the least costly stamp is listed by Facit 2024 at SEK 400. The stamp itself with an ordinary postmark would sell for $54. Crown and Posthorn cancellations are unusual on the I GILDI stamps. Very pretty stamp. ACTUAL item. |

Especially nice about such a sheet is that the four types of the I GILDI overprint (thickness of the zeros: thin-thin, thin-thick, thick-thin, thick-thick) is represented in TWO 4-STRIPS (positions 34-37 and 84-87) and TWO 4-BLOCKS (15-16/25-26 and 65-66/75-76). 60, Facit #45c [1902 5 aur Perf 14 x 13.5 with Red I GILDI overprint] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF+ centering. The overprint is from Setting V and is position 11 on the overprint plate (of 50) which correctly corresponds with the underlying sheet position possibilities of 11 or 61 (based on the cliche features of the underlying stamp). This overprint exists on all three printings / colors of the underlying stamp -- this is Facit #45c, the Light Green. The stamp is in outstanding quality for this issue, with wonderfully fresh color and with perfect perforations. One perforation tooth toward the left, at top and bottom, is very thin -- this is a natural feature of the perforation tool in that column of stamps of the sheet. AIEP member and preeminent I Gildi expert Ellis Glatt viewed a high resolution image of the stamp in October 2024 and commented that the overprint is genuine in his opinion. This stamp is accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with a "lifetime guarantee" from Jay Smith (details of the guarantee are available upon request). The Scott 2025 value is $2100 and the Facit 2024 value is SEK 19,000. An outstanding example of an extremely scarce stamp! [From the Frederick H. Campbell collection.] ACTUAL item. |
