Includes plate variety "dents in left frame near top" in position #1. Centering varies as usual, however, wonderfully fresh and a great item to illustrate the watermark. The break-up value is about $75, but this is simply too pretty to break up.

89 Plate Variety [1911 6 aur Sigurdsson] Used VF+ with very neat, light (but correct type of) cancellation well away from the variety, with unlisted (in the AFA 2016 Specialized or any other catalog) plate variety: Large break in left frame opposite nose, with piece from the break out in the margin. A very distinct and clear type of constant variety. Because this is obviously major plate damage (and not just a piece of trash on the plate), it is by definition a constant variety. However, it is so obvious that it was probably repaired very quickly and thus few copies may exist (with the result that it has not come to the attention of the catalog editors). This is more obvious than any of the listed varieties on the Sigurdsson issue! A very special item that should become listed! Listed varieties that are nowhere near as obvious are listed at DKK 450!

The watermark is so pronounced (the paper is so thin in that area) that the printing of the design did not fully impress into the watermark area, thus you can see the faint outline of the watermark in the lower left quadrant of the stamp where the ink coverage is not quite complete. I have only previously seen a couple stamps (from any country) with such a feature!

91 PARTIAL DOUBLE PRINT [1911 25 aur Sigurdsson] Mint Fine+, with one shorter perforation. This example shows a very clear doubling, which is what is called a "kiss print" or "slide print" -- as the paper is coming into contact or leaving contact with the plate, it accidentally touches the plate a second time. This gives one the sense of a double impression, but it is not doubled over the whole stamp. This example shows strong doubling in the left margin and the "25". This type of variety is quite rare on Icelandic stamps (or Danish stamps; the same firm printed the stamps of both countries at the time). Very interesting and attractive.

This is perhaps the rarest of the Orlof overprints and is "rare" even with faults -- this just might be the nicest example any of us ever see! As of 12/2023, this is only the second example I have had (in any condition) in 50 years and the other example was in really terrible condition (but it still sold for $200). I believe this to be the rarest overprinted Orlof stamp.

103 [1918 6 aur Two Kings, Crosses Watermark] NH F-VF/F-VF+ upper left corner margin plate #93-H block of four. Unimportant tear in top selvage. This was the only plate number for the 6 aur with crosses watermark. A key early plate block; quite scarce, but especially so in such nice quality. Even NH single stamps of this one are hard to find.

103 [1918 6 aur Two Kings, Crosses Watermark, Perf 14 x 14.5] NH with Just-Fine centering. Unlisted (by AFA), but very obvious, plate variety: "very weak design inside top frame line". This really should be listed if it can be proved to be a constant variety. A normal NH Fine stamp would be $43 (and VF $84!).
