34 [1902 3 aur Christian IX] Mint VF+ with INVERTED WATERMARK. Bright and fresh appearance. Though the catalog value of the inverted watermark variety of this stamp is quite modest, it is seldom offered and especially not with such nice centering.

35 variety, Facit #64v, AFA #36x [1902 4 aur Christian IX] NH VF-XF with the frame variety "AUP instead of AUR" from positions 95 in the sheet. This variety is the result of damage to the cliche, not because the engraver made a P instead of an R. However, any variety that changes the text of a stamp is of intense interest to collectors. This example is wonderfully fresh and bright. Facit 2020 value is SEK 1500 and AFA 2016 Specialized value is DKK 800. Seldom offered, in fact I have only had a couple examples of this variety in 46 years (and no others this nice!) which causes me to think the cliche damage probably occurred later in the printing process. I believe that this variety is significantly undervalued in the catalogs.

35 variety, AFA #36v [1902 4 aur Christian IX] Mint F-VF, lightly hinged with the frame variety "colored line in frame color between frame and portrait". Exists from positions 5, 8, 9, 20, 55, 58, 59, and 70, thus there are small differences between them: THIS EXAMPLE SHOWS A SHORT, THICK LINE ABOVE THE R of RD. Though this AFA-listed variety exists from several positions, is remarkably seldom found and is rarely offered for sale. Very fresh and attractive.

35 variety, AFA #36v [1902 4 aur Christian IX] Mint F-VF with the frame variety "colored line in frame color between frame and portrait". Exists from positions 5, 8, 9, 20, 55, 58, 59, and 70, thus there are small differences between them: THIS EXAMPLE SHOWS A VERY LONG THIN LINE ABOVE THE ENTIRE TEXT (more like the image in the AFA 1995/1997). Though this AFA-listed variety exists from several positions, is remarkably seldom found and is rarely offered for sale. Very fresh and attractive.

36 [1902 5 aur Christian IX] Used with XF centering and attractive, about 50% complete, violet BREIÐDA(ALSVIK) Type 2 (only type for this town) Crown and Posthorn cancellation. Facit C/P cancel #118 (2024 value SEK 400). Though this particular C/P cancel does not have a very high catalog value, this strike is remarkably nice and readable; it is especially nice to show the first letters of the town -- also, it is upright and on a well-centered stamp. An excellent example for this type of postmark! The stamp was issued 9 October 1902 and the use almost all (including this one) C/P cancellations ceased by summer of 1903, thus this cancellation on this stamp was only possible for about 8 months!

36 variety, AFA #37y [1902 5 aur Christian IX] Used with F-VF centering and extremely light cancellation, with the frame variety "dent in top frame line above upper left ornament". 36 [1902 5 aur Christian IX] Used F-VF+ horizontal pair with full 15 May 1906 bridge cancellation. The town name is hard to read, but it is NOT Reykjavik -- it is probably BLÖNDUÓS. Unusually dark color for the 5 aur. Very attractive.

37 [1902 6 aur Christian IX] Used Superb centered 4-BLOCK. Has some age discoloration on the backside, but front looks terrific. Single, neat centrally struck REYKJAVIK cancellation. Used blocks are not currently cataloged anywhere of which I am aware, but used blocks of the Christian IX issue are quite unusual, especially this nice looking.

37 [1902 6 aur Christian IX] Used with VF centering and proper, almost complete SEYDISFJORDUR single-ring provincial cancellation. Almost full cancel but sideways (this cancellation style did not contain a year date). This issue is hard to find with full single-ring town cancellations. Excellent example. Though not a very scarce stamp, examples this nice and this nicely canceled are seldom seen.

37 [1902 6 aur Christian IX] Used F-VF with light (partial numeral) cancellation. This example shows an unlisted plate variety in the central medallion: "diagonal, upper right to lower left, cuts in the right side of the medallion". This brings up a bit of a mystery. The 6 aur is not listed by either AFA or Regeling with any medallion (or frame) varieties. Yet the literature suggests that there were 100 medallion cliches (but only 50 frame cliches; the frame plate was printed twice per sheet), which were used for both the postage and official issues, but that the medallion cliches were not always in the same positions in the sheet (presumed removed for cleaning and reassembled differently). However, the 15 medallion cliche varieties listed by Regeling are not consistently recorded on all Christian IX (postage and official) issues ... when they recorded, they are not necessarily recorded in the expected order of production (either on all issues or from some point onward). Thus there are all sorts of unanswered questions about how the medallions were printed, how the medallion plates were assembled and re-assembled, if there were replacements of damaged cliches, etc. A stamp such as this one helps point out the questions, but by itself, does not provide any answers.

44B [1904 5 kr Christian IX] Used with XF centering. Very fresh appearance with great color, clean white paper, and perfect perforations. Neat lower corner cancellation almost "face free". An additional interesting feature of this example, though it does not increase the price, is that the crown watermark is horizontally split (shifted so that the right and left halves are on each stamp); this is not unusual on lower denominations, but I have seen very few such examples of the 5 kronur stamp. The centering and cancellation are exceptional for this stamp (it is usually very poorly centered). One of the nicest looking Used examples I have had in several years. A great example of a key Icelandic stamp that is quite scarce in nice Used condition.
