Norway: Gallery: Select Stamps - 1907-1935 Various Issues
Particularly attractive and scarce stamps that will make a wonderful addition to your collection. Most of these issues are not often offered! Unless otherwise stated, Scott Catalog numbers have been used. Mint stamps will have full original gum unless otherwise mentioned. All items are available for viewing on approval.
64 [1907 1 kr King Haakon VII, First Design] Used with Fine centering and neat, fully dated, virtually complete, circular (bridge style) 21 August 1909 LEVANGER (a mid-sized town) town cancellation. Such complete circular cancellations are quite scarce on these high-denomination Haakon VII stamps, especially from other than the largest cities.

67 [1909 1 kr King Haakon, Die II] Used with centering that is technically F-VF+, but it has four clear margins which is unusual for this small-margined stamp. Neat 1910 parcel cancel (as was normally used). Unusually strong, deep color. Much nicer than usually found!

Scott #68 [1910 1-1/2 kr King Haakon, Die II] Used with F-VF centering and neat, partial circular cancellation strikes (not parcel cancels). Very attractive example of a very scarce stamp, with a remarkably crisp and clear impression. NO defects of any kind. This is usually among the last two or three stamps most collectors need to complete their Norway collection! (Scott 2025 value $425!)

Scott #101 PLATE VARIETY, NK #127v2 "white hump at top of tail and color spot in tail just to lower right of the hump" [1922 20 øre red violet Lion with Line Below ØRE] Also ROUGH PERFORATION VARIETY. Used with XF centering, but has slightly bluish tinge on the left side (probably from writing on the mailing envelope). This NK-listed plate variety is "rarely" offered despite the modest catalog value; for this variety NK does not list the plate position or printing, but I believe that this only comes from one position in the sheet and only from one or two printings! This is only the second Used (or Mint) example I have been able to offer in 52 years -- very few examples seem to have survived and have been recognized for what they are. Despite the bluish tinge at left, this is a great looking example.

Scott #104 PLATE VARIETY, Facit #151v, NK #130v1 "missing vertical rudder on tail" [1925 2 øre Polar Bear and Airplane (Amundsen Polar Flight)] HORIZONTAL PAIR WITH VARIETY STAMP ON THE RIGHT. Used with VF centering and neat 12 May 1931 machine cancellation. This Facit-listed and NK-listed plate variety, the most prominent variety from this set, is "very seldom" offered. The catalogs state that this variety comes only from position 22 in the sheet. However, so few examples are seen in collections that I believe that either the variety developed during the printing process or that the variety is only present on one printing. (However, I do not know the printing details of the Amundsen issue. I have not been able to confirm it, but the press sheet size was apparently only 100 stamps; the issued sheet size was 100 stamps. I can find no record of "marginal date imprints" on the Amundsen issue, even though they are found on other stamp issues of this era, thus I do not know if there was more than one printing -- probably not. I welcome further information on this subject.) The 2024 Facit value is SEK 150, but the usually much lower NK collector-to-collector value is NOK 150 which is about 50% higher in US$.) Considering that I am only able to offer an example of this variety every 4-8 years, those catalog values seem to be very far too low. Furthermore, this is an outstanding example of the variety -- in a pair with the normal stamp for easy comparison -- in excellent quality with excellent centering, clean perforations, and a postmark that is clear of the variety. The stamps of this issue are eagerly sought by collectors of Norway, as well as topical / thematic collectors of Bears, Airplanes, and Polar Exploration.

123 [1927 35 øre olive-brown Standing Lion, typographed] NEVER HINGED with F-VF+ centering, but with a one short perforation. The 35 øre olive-brown is the scarcest (Mint, Hinged or NH) stamp in this definitive issue -- it is a key stamp missing from many collections, especially in NH condition. There were ten printings of this stamp resulting in several obvious differences in color and gum. This example is Greenish Olive with White Smooth Gum. NH examples are quite hard to find. Facit 2022 NH value SEK 3200 [about $380 4/2022].

149 Shifted Overprint Variety, Facit #176bv, NK #176vo1, Orange-Yellow [1929 "14 ØRE 14" Surcharge on "2 SKILL 2"] Used with typical Average centering a nice, light cancellation. To qualify to be this variety, the overprint has to be at least 1 mm above the "2 SKILL 2", leaving the original denomination completely clear -- this certainly qualifies. While the overprint on this issue normally shifts around somewhat, usually the reason that the overprint is this far off is because the underlying stamps are so poorly centered, not necessarily that the overprint was shifted. Thus examples of well centered stamps probably do not exist (or are extremely rare) with this shifted overprint variety. Examples with such a strong shift as this one are remarkably hard to find. Facit 2024 value SEK "from 400". [From the Hamerschlag collection.]
