162-76 [1937 5-60 øre complete set of Watermarked Definitives] Matched set of NH VF+ 4-BLOCKS. Fresh and brilliant! This issue is surprisingly hard to find in NH with such nice centering. As four single sets, the price totals about $420 -- offered for less than the break-up value.

190 and 192 Gutter Pairs [1940 5 øre Posthorn and 10 øre Lion, Without Watermark]. From special sheets printed to make booklet panes; the central gutter provided the binding margin for the booklet panes. Though they have a low catalog value, they are seldom offered and are hard to obtain. NH VF.

Scott #218 [1941 50 øre V Overprint, With Watermark] Used with F-VF+ centering. Superbly centered -- and as complete as possible on this size stamp -- "OSLO / P.N." 30 August 1941 hand cancellation. This stamp was first available on 15 August, just 15 days earlier. The correct type/position of watermark clearly shows in watermark fluid and even faintly shows without fluid at the bottom of the stamp. If you are watermarking this or any photogravure-printed Norwegian stamp, you must use watermark fluid that is labeled as being "safe" for photogravure stamps. Clarity brand fluid is one (of several) such fluids that are "safe". This example, and one other but with a less complete postmark -- both with identical centering, identical watermark positioning, and seemingly the same style of postmark -- were found in the estate of a Norwegian collector who received them on mail (and soaked them many decades ago). I believe that they were from the same sheet of stamps and mailed by the same person to the collector who saved them. In addition to this stamp being one of the "key" Norwegian stamps that are missing from most Norway collections, it is "rare" with such a nice, complete, fully dated postmark. A wonderful example! Accompanied by a 2025 Jay Smith color certificate with "lifetime" guarantee (inquire for guarantee details). (Facit 2024 value SEK 5000 for Used in normal quality with normal cancellation that does not show a date -- this example is much nicer.)

Scott #218 [1941 50 øre V Overprint, With Watermark] Used with F-VF+ centering. Very neat, partial "OSLO" hand cancellation. Scott #238 [1941 5 kr V Overprint, Without Watermark] Used with XF centering and SUPERB OSLO 14 8 [August] 41 FIRST DAY CANCELLATION. A wonderful example with great centering, strong color, and excellent appearance. This 5 kr stamp is "very scarce" with cancellations in the proper period of use, and even more so with well-centered cancellations and/or fully dated cancellations. However, a FIRST DAY CANCELED example with such a "perfect" cancellation strike is truly exceptional! Facit 2024 value for a "normal" properly dated cancellation is SEK 1200. However this example is "rare" and outstanding quality! A superlative example!

515/516 ORIGINAL ARTWORK [1968 Aasmund Olavssund VINJE] The original 1967 artwork of the K. Løkke-Sørensen design for this important 1968 stamp issue commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Aasmund Olavssund Vinje. A beautiful 100 x 135 mm painting, in shades of brown, on illustrator board (115 x 145 mm). The design is almost identical to the issued stamps except that the denomination is 90 and is on the left instead of right. There is also a design error in the painting (corrected on the issued stamp) -- the artist used the initials OA instead of AO. Signed by the artist at lower left and dated "67". Vinje was a proponent of the use of the Nynorsk [New Norwegian] (Landsmål) language. This is the second Norwegian stamp issue to use the Nynorsk "NOREG" country name! (The first was the 1951 Arne Garborg issue.) Provenance: This was in the William Benfield collection (so marked on the reverse). Benfield bought it from auctioneer and stamp dealer Irwin Heiman (Metro Stamp Company), February 24, 1973 (see note on back of the Benfield album page; the reference to Memphis was because Benfield lived there at the time). I purchased it from Benfield in the late 1980s (?) as part of the Benfield non-Danish essay-proof collection. I sold it to a member of the Vinje family located in the U.S. (early 1990s?). That family later sold it to a western U.S. stamp dealer who noticed that the description was from me and the dealer sold it to me in July 2014. I then sold it again to collector MXZ in September 2014 and repurchased it from MXZ in September 2017 with other parts of his collection.
