Scott #74, Facit #100v YELLOWISH VERY THICK PAPER [1910 1 øre yellowish olive brown Posthorn] NEVER HINGED with JUMBO-SIZED MARGINS and SUPERB CENTERING. While this is not a "scarce" variety in normal quality, in my experience it is "rare" in this extraordinary quality! There are several colors and papers of this stamp; one can make a very interesting display of this lowest-denomination stamp. Look for different color shades, Mint and Used blocks, Plate Blocks (month-year date marginal blocks; these help to sort out the colors/printings), Used singles with interesting cancellations, and because this stamp was only used as a make-up-rate denomination look for the wide range of potential uses (along with other stamps, or rarely several of these stamps alone making up a rate) on covers and cards.

Scott #74, Facit #100v YELLOWISH VERY THICK PAPER [1910 1 øre yellowish olive brown Posthorn] BLOCK OF FOUR. NEVER HINGED with F-VF centering. This block is as fresh as the day it was printed. While this is not a "scarce" variety as a single stamp in normal quality, in my experience blocks are "rarely" seen. I can only recall having one other NH block of this paper variety in the last 53 years!

Scott #75 SET OF TWO PERFORATION, PAPER, AND GUM VARIETIES [1909 2 øre orange brown Posthorn] NEVER HINGED with SUPERB CENTERING on both stamps. One stamp has the "normal" CLEAN PERFORATIONS; it is an early printing with SLIGHTLY OFF-WHITE PAPER and SLIGHTLY YELLOWISH CRACKLY GUM. The other stamp has EXTREMELY ROUGH PERFORATIONS; it is a late printing with BRIGHT WHITE PAPER and WHITE GLOSSY GUM. The rough perforation stamps mostly came from later printings caused by worn-out perforation tools. While these variations on this stamp are not "scarce" in normal quality, they are seldom offered on NH stamps and are "rarely" seen with such nice centering! There are several colors and papers of this stamp; one can make a very interesting display of this low-denomination stamp. Look for different color shades, Mint and Used blocks, Plate Blocks (month-year date marginal blocks; these help to sort out the colors/printings), Used singles with interesting cancellations. Because this stamp only had one possible "solo" use -- for the "local printed matter circular rate" (in the U.S. we would call it a "circular" rate because "circulars" was the term for the printed matter items that were delivered to most or all possible recipients in an area); they were typical not addressed individually or were addressed in a generic way such as "to all citizens of [town name]" -- or as a make-up rate denomination, look for the wide range of potential uses (along with other stamps, or rarely several of these stamps alone making up a rate) on covers and cards.

Scott #76 SET OF FOUR PERFORATION, PAPER, AND GUM VARIETIES [1910 3 øre orange Posthorn] NEVER HINGED with VF or better (one is Superb) CENTERING on all four stamps. Three stamps have clean-cut perforations, on off-white to white paper, with slightly yellowish crackly gum (but slightly different gum appearance from stamp to stamp), and in THREE COLOR SHADES (Intense Orange, Orange, and Light Orange). The fourth stamp has rough perforations, bright white paper, and whiter gum though still not as smooth as the final printings. The rough perforation stamps mostly came from later printings caused by worn-out perforation tools. While these variations on this stamp are not "scarce" in normal quality, they are seldom offered on NH stamps and hard to find with nice centering! There are several colors and papers of this stamp; one can make a very interesting display of this low-denomination stamp. This was one of the "primary" stamp issues -- 415 MILLION printed -- and was the rate for local letters (which could include local post cards) and domestic printed matter (which could include post cards with 5 words or less of message). It was also heavily used as a make-up rate denomination. Thus there are lots of potential opportunities for varieties and printing, paper, and gum differences. Look for different color shades, Mint and Used blocks, Plate Blocks (month-year date marginal blocks; these help to sort out the colors/printings), Used singles with interesting cancellations. Look for the wide range of potential uses on covers and cards.

Scott #77 [1910 5 øre green Posthorn] NEVER HINGED with VF centering. Dark green color, clean-cut perforations, white paper, and white glassy gum (thus from a later printing). Wonderfully fresh and bright! This stamp is common in normal Mint Hinged or Used condition, but because the stamps were exhausted in normal postal use and later replaced with a dark lilac color of the same design, rather few NH examples remain. NH stamps, especially with such nice centering are "scarce". The Facit Classic 2024 Catalog assigns a 5.4 times value multiple (of the Hinged value) for NH examples -- but they are even scarcer than that with nice centering. This is the nicest example I have had in at least several years!

Scott #77 BOOKLET PAIR, Facit #103BB from booklet Facit #H9 [1910 (booklet also 1910) 5 øre Green Posthorn] Used VF booklet pair (straight edges on left and right) with two strikes of an (unreadable) traveling post office (probably a coastal ship) cancellation, that appears to be dated in 1915. There is one shorter perforation at the top, but otherwise the perforations are remarkably nice for one of these "very scarce" pairs. This example has small-hole perforations which indicates that the booklet from which this came was made from sheets of a slightly later printing, which fits with the apparent 1915 cancellation date. I have not previously had an example with perforation holes this small. The catalogs list the booklet having been issued in 1910, but it is very likely that production continued for several years, on an occasional as-needed basis, using whatever sheets (printing) of the 5 øre green stamps were currently available. This is from a "very rare" booklet with a Facit Classic 2024 value of SEK 20,000 -- very few examples of the booklet remain in existence. This example is very well centered for this type of pair and has remarkably large margins. This is much, much nicer than typically seen! Probably because such pairs are not well known -- most collectors have never even seen a picture of one -- the value stated in the catalogs is much lower than the rarity would suggest. Such pairs are "rarely" offered, but these pairs do have spaces in certain Norwegian albums, including at least one edition of the Lighthouse album.

Scott #78 GROUP OF THREE DIFFERENT COLORS / PAPERS / GUMS [1922 5 øre magenta Posthorn] NEVER HINGED with XF (two) or VF (one) centering. All three have clean perforations, but are different color shades -- but they are all three shades of the scarcer red lilac color group (not brownish lilac). Two stamps are on slightly-off white paper with slightly yellowish crackly gum, from earlier printings. The third stamp is on bright white paper (thus a later printing) with white/clear slightly crackly gum. This "workhorse" stamp is common in normal quality, but such nice NH examples are surprisingly hard to find. There were many printings of this stamp resulting in different papers, colors, and appearance of perforations, but the specialized catalogs do not provide any information other than Facit separating the color shades into "red lilac" and "brownish lilac". This denomination presents a great possibility for making a specialized collection and forging your own path.

Scott #78 Pale Grayish Lilac on Bright White Paper [1922 5 øre magenta Posthorn] NEVER HINGED with F-VF centering. Clean perforations and white/clear gum. Wonderfully fresh and quite an unusual color shade. Though there were many printings of this stamp, this is a very unusual example. This example has a much, much lighter and grayer color than usually seen. This "workhorse" stamp is common in normal quality, but such nice NH examples of unusual color shades are surprisingly hard to find; furthermore, this color/paper is particularly unusual (in any condition / quality). There were many printings of this stamp resulting in different papers, colors, and appearance of perforations, but the specialized catalogs do not provide any information other than Facit separating the color shades into "red lilac" and "brownish lilac". This denomination presents a great possibility for making a specialized collection and forging your own path.

Scott #78 Red Lilac [1922 5 øre magenta Posthorn] LOWER LEFT CORNER MARGIN VERTICAL BLOCK OF SIX. NEVER HINGED with Fine centering. The color shade is from the scarcer red lilac color group (not brownish lilac). The paper is slightly off-white and the gum is slightly yellowish (irregularly applied, but not especially crackly). The perforations are the small-hole type, somewhat rough. This "workhorse" stamp is common in normal quality, but nice NH blocks are nowadays surprisingly hard to find -- most blocks have been broken up for the single stamps. There were many printings of this stamp resulting in different papers, colors, and appearance of perforations, but the specialized catalogs do not provide any information other than Facit separating the color shades into "red lilac" and "brownish lilac". This denomination presents a great possibility for making a specialized collection and forging your own path.

Scott #78 Deep Lilac on Yellowish Paper [1922 5 øre magenta Posthorn] Mint, extremely lightly hinged (you may need a magnifying glass to find the hinge mark), with SUPERB centering. Though there were many printings of this stamp, this is an unusual example. This example has much deeper color than usually seen. Though this does not look "brownish lilac" to me, it may belong to the "brownish lilac" group that Facit lists. The yellowish paper (and slightly yellowish gum) is quite unusual on this stamp and suggests that this is either an early printing or a small printing of which I have seen very few examples. This example has smaller-hole perforations than typically seen. This "workhorse" stamp is common in normal quality, but such nice LH examples are surprisingly hard to find; furthermore, this color/paper is particularly unusual (in any condition / quality). There were many printings of this stamp resulting in different papers, colors, and appearance of perforations, but the specialized catalogs do not provide any information other than Facit separating the color shades into "red lilac" and "brownish lilac". Scott #79 Deep Yellow Green [1929 7 øre yellow green Posthorn] NEVER HINGED with XF-Superb centering. Very dark color for this stamp, with small-ish hole perforations (this stamp does not seem to come with truly small perf holes), on off-white paper, with yellowish-crackly gum. Wonderfully fresh and bright with huge margins. This stamp was created to meet the need of just-changed domestic printed matter rate and the samples/patterns rate, and it also served for a while for both Nordic and European printed matter rates. It would be a fun challenge to find on cover/card uses to different Nordic and European countries, as well as fairly scarce multiples of the 7 øre rate for heavier items. There were several printings of this stamp resulting in different color shades, slightly different appearance of perforations, slightly different papers appearance, and different gums. However, the specialized catalogs do not provide any information beyond a single listing. While not as diverse as some other of the stamps in this Posthorn issue, this denomination presents possibilities for making a specialized collection and forging your own path.

Scott #79 Bright Yellow Green [1929 7 øre yellow green Posthorn] NEVER HINGED with XF centering. Very bright, intense color for this stamp, with normal-hole perforations, on bright white paper, with white/clear gum. Wonderfully fresh and bright with large margins and "perfect" perforations. Scott #79 Light Yellow Green, Bright White Paper [1929 7 øre yellow green Posthorn] BLOCK OF FOUR, Used with VF-XF centering and single, central "OSLO / BR VII" cancellation (date hard to read). Unusually light color for this stamp, with normal-hole perforations, on bright white paper. Used blocks of this stamp are seldom seen. While the single used stamp is common, block are likely scarce because if used for printed matter or samples/patterns, it would have been a 4th weight class rate and thus bulky -- the stamps would likely either have gotten damaged or the package would have been discarded (as much printed matter was).

Scott #80, Facit #106D BOOKLET SINGLE (corner-cut) from H10, BRIGHT WHITE PAPER [1909 (booklet 1910) 10 øre Red Posthorn] LOWER LEFT CORNER SINGLE. Used with VF-XF centering and JUMBO sized margins! Extremely nice centering and with a wavy-line machine cancellation. The booklet stamps are MUCH SCARCER than the catalog values suggest. This exists on white and yellowish paper. (This is from a very scarce booklet; the Facit Classic 2024 Mint Booklet value is SEK 3,800!) Exceptional quality!

Scott #80, Facit #106B BOOKLET SINGLE from H10, OFF-WHITE PAPER [1909 (booklet 1910) 10 øre Red Posthorn] RIGHT STRAIGHT EDGE SINGLE. Used with VF centering and large sized margins! This example shows some "gum soak staining" from having gotten wet too long at some point, but that is only visible on the reverse and is hardly noticeable. Very nice centering and with a fully-dated, mostly-complete "O(SL)O / Br." 25 March 1936 round-part-only machine cancellation. The 1936 date is the latest that I can recall seeing; I suspect that somebody found they still had a booklet in their desk drawer and used it! The booklet stamps are MUCH SCARCER than the catalog values suggest. This exists on bright white and off-white (yellowish) paper. (This is from a very scarce booklet; the Facit Classic 2024 Mint Booklet value is SEK 3,800!) Very attractive!

Scott #83 Dark Red Brown [1910 brown (shades) 15 øre Posthorn] Mint, hinge remnant, with VF centering. Facit lists (#109a) a Reddish Brown, but this is NOT that. The Facit-listed "Reddish Brown" is a very light color, which I call "Light Red Brown". Instead this is Facit #83b which Facit describes in very general terms as a range of colors, "Dark Brown to Brown". The "Dark Brown" extreme of that spectrum is very dark and is NOT obviously reddish. However, the "Brown" end of that spectrum is actually this color -- which I call "Dark Red Brown" to clearly distinguish it from the Facit #83a. This stamp is remarkably difficult to find with nice centering; most examples seen are only Fine or perhaps F-VF. This example has nice perforations for this small-hole perforation issue. While this stamp has a modest catalog value, it is much scarcer with nice centering than the catalog value suggests.
