1.  New Items on the Website Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

An interesting group of Greenland items have been added to the website:

     Slania-engraved Queen Inverted Overprint.
     Liberation Issue Inverted Overprint.
Other American / Liberation issue items including with plate numbers and with village postmarks.

Thule Local Post complete set of proofs in issued colors -- extremely rare!

Rockwell Kent Semi-Official Airmail Stamps: signed, unsigned, and a low-cost example with a thin.
1938-39 Northeast Greenland Expedition post cards; different card types, postmarks types, and arrival postmark types.
1950 definitive issue cover that is probably first day of use at Upernavik.

Iceland has quite a few more 1900-1940 era mint stamps (select from the list) and many new super-high quality stamps in the Iceland Gallery pages (starting here, quite a few pages).

United States stamps to 1930 and also the airmails are well represented with many new attractive mint and used stamps.

A really nice group of Canal Zone stamps including both the early overprints and later better issues have been added. These don't come along often!

Canada (several pages starting here)is also represented with quite a few attractive "better" stamps added.

Quite a few more interesting worldwide stamps have been added from the following countries: British Antarctic Territory (BAT), Christmas Island, Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand including many very nice perforated and imperforate souvenir sheets, Vietnam, Romania. Take a look at the Worldwide Table of Contents for those and other countries.

2.  New Printed and PDF Price Lists Now Available Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

Completely updated and revised versions of printed price list sent by postal mail or downloadable PDF price lists are now available.

My downloadable and printed/mailed price lists have been newly updated to reflect the many new additions to the website. These include the complete "regular" stamp price lists for Åland, Danish West Indies, Denmark, Faroe, Greenland, and Iceland. (Finland, Norway, and Sweden are under development; in the meantime, send your want list.)

Five separate updated lists are available:
   Scandinavian Stamps
   Scandinavian Specialized
   Slania-Engraved & Greta Garbo
   United States & Worldwide
United States Only (same as the U.S. listings in the United States & Worldwide price list)

These lists ONLY include items that are listed on the website. Not included in the downloadable / printed price lists are items from those few web pages that do not yet have "shopping cart ability".

[Printed lists of Specials Collections & Used Literature sections are available separately by request; they change very frequently -- it is best to check the listings on the website.]

The easiest and fastest way to get these price lists, or the most recent philatelic literature price list, is to download them as PDF files.

Alternatively, you can obtain them as printed copies by postal mail, however, there is a limit on how many times I can send such mailings without receiving an order in return. For overseas mailings, due to the high postage costs, there is a charge for the lists (but a credit memo is supplied in return). For complete information and to email your request to get the lists, go: HERE.

3.  The 2007 Year Books (and earlier issues too) Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

Scandinavian Year Books

The 2007 Scandinavian Year Books are in stock and are now on the website. This year Åland issues their biannual book (2006-07) and the other five year-book-issuing countries continue their annual issues. You can find the 2007 year books listed under the countries: The books have been issued by Åland, Denmark, Faroe, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

Furthermore, I recently purchased two collections that included excellent runs of the beautiful annual year books. Combined with my existing stock, I think I can offer virtually complete coverage.

These are handsome, large, hardbound books (not the smaller year packs) that are packed with wonderful color pictures and interesting text about the subjects of the stamp issues. Oh, and they include the NH VF stamps too! These books really enhance the experience of collecting a country's stamps. I have had several people tell me that they leave one out on the coffee table when guests are coming -- when the guests see the book, they suddenly understand that there is more to stamp collecting than "little bits of paper".

The books have been issued by Åland, Denmark, Faroe, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. (Greenland has issued some thematic books, but I don't have those on the website yet.) The first books from a Scandinavian country came out in 1987, thus it is quite reasonable to build a complete set from one or all the countries. (And I can offer a discount on a run of years.)

To view the listings, click on the country links in the paragraph above.

LAPE Finland Specialized Catalog 2008
The LAPE Finland Specialized Catalog 2008 is now in stock and ready to be shipped. I had previously announced the catalog in recent E-News editions, but I had not actually seen it yet. Now two events cause me to convey the urgency of the situation to you.

First, I have seen the catalog and it is outstanding! It has been completely revised and expanded, with both a larger page size and more pages. Now at 784 pages, this catalog is more useful than ever. The production quality is outstanding and there is more English text than ever before, usually where you especially need it (but still not 100%).

Secondly, the publisher has informed me that the catalog has been extremely well received and that only about 200 copies remain. Their original plan was to issue the next edition in 2012, but this early near-sellout has raised the possibility of the next edition perhaps coming out in 2011. But, the remaining copies will certainly be gone very soon and 3-4 years is a long time to wait!

In case you are waiting for the next NORMA Specialized catalog, that publisher has informed me "We have not yet made a final decision about when the next large [specialized] Norma will be issued, but probably autumn 2009." Based on past experience, that realistically two years from now -- also a long time to wait.

Here is the description of the catalog from my website:

LAPE 2008 Finland Specialized Catalog
Completely revised and enlarged new edition on 784 larger-format pages (now 6.75 x 9.75 inch or 170 x 250 mm format), completely in full color. Quite a bit of ENGLISH text (otherwise Finnish and Swedish), especially in intro sections and catalog listings. Includes stamps; booklets; postal stationery; cover prices, including early destination; arc, 2-ring, and Finland postmark type cancels priced; specimens; Vasa article; numbered plate block pricing; Russia used in Finland; Karelia, Aunus, North Ingermanland; shipping company stamps; locals; perfins; revenues; railway stamps; postal rates, machine stamps (Framas); and MORE! Highly recommended. This tremendous catalog has to be seen to be believed!
#1459 $85.00

ORDER ONLINE:

https://www.JaySmith.com/Literature/lit001-cat.html#a_1459

Shipping in the U.S., by Media Mail, is only a $3.00 flat fee for an order or one or several books from the Literature section. Save by combining this order with your order for other books.

The cost of shipping varies in the U.S. by Priority Mail or shipping to other countries. Please inquire for other shipping costs.

While the price of $85 may seem a bit high, the book is massive and I guarantee that you will find it very useful. Also, it turned out that the publisher only charged me HALF the shipping cost from Finland to the U.S. and I am passing the savings on to you.

Lastly, a bit of trivia. I have been asked what "LAPE" means. LAPE was a name used by an old-time stamp dealer company in Finland founded by (Mr.) Lauri Peltonen.... LAuri PEltonen. The Peltonen firm was a family company started in the 1920s (or earlier?) and continued on into at least the 1990s. The family is no longer involved in publishing the catalog. During WWII, the family had to quickly, but temporarily, leave their Hankö home and business due to bombing by the Russians. The 2008 catalog is the 70th edition of a LAPE catalog (some editions are simplified and much smaller)!

Please order soon to avoid disappointment.

Recent E-News Editions

It has been a while since I last posted a full, illustrated E-News on the website. Frankly, it is a lot of work and time is always limited with too many #1 Priorities. Instead, the last few issues of the E-News have simply been emailed versions without illustrations. However, I will try to do better -- in fact I do enjoy that kind of work.

I will be going back and posting the intervening E-News editions on the website. Though they are not as fancy and don't have illustrations, they still contain lots of useful information and special offers. I am finding that this is important to many clients because the vagaries of email are such that probably 30% of the E-News subscribers don't receive any given E-News edition (due to overly aggressive spam filters or AOL's & Earthlink's heavy-handed filtering / blocking). Also, we are all busy folks and sometimes it is just not a good time to be reading email. By also posting the emailed-only E-News editions on the website, you can go back and read them at any time.

To see the full list of E-News that have been posted, go to the E-News Table of Contents page.

I have posted the 31 January 2008 emailed-only E-News edition to the website. If you do not recall receiving it, you can read it here.
Linn's Stamp News "Stamp Market Tip"
U.S. Scott #3611 Longleaf Pine Forest sheet

Complete information and ordering...
The Linn's Stamp News "Stamp Market Tip" column for February 4, 2008, focused on the United States Scott #3611 Longleaf Pine Forest sheet (which contains one set of stamps). This issue has become quite hard to find. I have a few examples left at $14.00 each. Order mint here.

If you prefer canceled, I have a couple postally used (to pay postal fees) neatly canceled sheets available for $13.50. Order canceled here.

FDC Version with breaks in the die cutting lines.

Regular Version without breaks in the die cutting lines.

Finland 9 May 2007 Eurovision Song Contest / Lordi souvenir sheet: [The popular Finnish "heavy metal" rock band Lordi was the 2006 Eurovision winner and is the main focus of this souvenir sheet, along with the four past Finnish winners.] I have "discovered" that there is a special FDC version of this s/s with distinct small breaks in the die cutting around the irregular shaped stamps. This was apparently done by the stamp printer, probably without the knowledge of the post office (that is consequence of outsourcing; previous discussions with postal officials indicate that they leave such matters to the stamp printers), so that a machine could handle and apply the s/s to the FDC envelope without the stamps falling out of the s/s.

There have been small differences (for the same reason) on other recent FDC-versions of self-adhesive stamps in the last couple of years, but this is the greatest difference I have seen. To my knowledge, no mint examples of this version have been reported. I had sold out to my usual FDC clients before this difference was discovered. I have managed to find a very few more FDCs, but due to the popularity of the issue, the topics pictured, and now that it is known to be a different version of the s/s, this will likely become nearly impossible to obtain.

NH VF souvenir sheet (regular version): $8.00
Canceled VF souvenir sheet (regular version): $8.00

Official FDC bearing the FDC version: $18.00
Only a very few available!

(Usual shipping/handling costs based on size of order and destination.)

Please Email to place your order.

If you are interested in such differences on other recent issues, please let me know and I will inform you about the few previous issues of which I am aware. I can also send newly issued items as they are discovered.

6.  Special Offers: Collections & Albums -- Great Buys Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

I am constantly buying large and small Scandinavian, U.S., and Worldwide collections. If you are considering getting into a new area and would like a "starter collection" (whether small or large), let me know about your interest. Also, if you are seeking used binders or used empty albums to match what you currently have, again, let me know. In the process of buying Scandinavian collections, many of my long-time clients (or their estates) ask that I assist in selling the non-Scandinavian portion of their collections. If there is something you are looking for, just let me know. Take a look at the current listings on the web site (but if you don't see your interest listed, please inquire -- most have not been listed on the web site yet).

I guarantee your satisfaction. Each item is one of a kind; orders will be filled in order of receipt. Payment by MasterCard or Visa suggested, but I will hold items for 10 days pending receipt of your check or money order if you prefer.

#731448   Scott 2-Post 2.5-Inch Specialty Binder
2.5-inch, 2-post Scott Specialty binder without specific labeling or stamping -- will work for any country. This one is older, back when they were built much stronger. #731449   Scott 2-Post 2.5-Inch Specialty Binder (Scandinavia Label)
2.5-inch, 2-post Scott Specialty binder with Scott "SCANDINAVIA AND FINLAND" gold-stamped label (it might peel off, but seems well attached). This one is quite new looking, with shiny gold stamping, etc. The binding (the hinged parts that open and close where the covers meet the spine) is well-used, but still has its integrity and will make a sturdy home for your pages. Overall in very fresh and attractive condition. $28.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731450   Scott 2-Post 2-Inch Specialty Binder (Scandinavia Stamped)
2-inch, 2-post Scott Specialty binder with gold foil stamping "SCANDINAVIA / FINLAND", but that could be covered with a label or a jacket. This one is older looking, with faded gold stamping, etc. There is also some residue from a label farther down on the spine. The binding (the hinged parts that open and close where the covers meet the spine) is very well-used and worn (from being used a lot without enough pages in it). This one will work fine to store pages, but is not the one to get if you want to carry it around a lot to the stamp club meeting. That being said, it still has a lot of life left in it and is reasonably attractive. $14.00

#731452   GF 9 - 1976 - Greenland - Expeditions and Flights After 1938...
... Including North Pole Expeditions and Trans-Arctic Flights. This unassuming 1976 Eric Wowern (thank you Eric, may you rest in peace) catalog is the last / most recent edition and is an extremely useful and important piece of Greenlandic philatelic literature. There is nowhere else that one can find this information so easily, and completely in English too, with 1976 pricing (which were even too low then). 69 pages, paper cover. Virtually new looking and extremely hard to find. $36.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731453   GF 7 - 1976 - Greenland - Meter Marks and Charity Labels

#731455   Postage Stamps of the United States 1847-1949
A pristine example of this extremely interesting and useful official post office book. Remarkably well-done handbook with LOTS of interesting and quite readable text about the stamp issues, etc. If you collect U.S. stamps, you will find this fascinating. Softbound, 185 pages. This is a pristine, like-new copy that has never been read; the spine has never been "opened". Whether for reading or collecting, you could not find a better example. $16.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731456   J.W. Philometer Compendium (United States Postage Meter Imprints)
(Jos. Whitebourgh, 1957) This 1957 First Edition was a pioneer publication in a new collecting area: postage meter imprints. Hardbound with 211 + XXV pages. An extremely interesting, comprehensive, thorough, well-illustrated, priced catalog / handbook of this fascinating area. Even in 1957 there were meter imprints valued in the hundreds of dollars. The author was a long-time collector and dealer, as well as an experienced philatelic writer; he knew how to properly present his subject. Surely there are newer catalogs, but this is a real gem -- and perhaps you could use it to make rare finds. This is a pristine, NEW copy that has never been read; the spine has never been "opened" and it is still in its original shipping box. Whether for reading or collecting, you could not find a better example. Perhaps you can find a cheaper copy somewhere, but you will not find a nicer copy. $26.00
