Literature: Scandinavia: Finland
These gently used books and catalogs are a great way to build your philatelic knowledge and library. All items are used and in at least "good" condition unless otherwise mentioned. I am constantly purchasing philatelic libraries, thus if there is anything you are seeking, please let me know. I guarantee your satisfaction.

Due to the low prices, variations in weight, and different mailing methods, distances, and destinations, shipping cost is additional for items in the Specials Literature listings unless otherwise mentioned. When ordering please include a note in the shopping cart comments section indicating if you prefer faster/costlier or slower/cheaper delivery so that I may more quickly quote the shipping costs and options for you.

Each item is usually one of a kind; orders will be filled in order of receipt. Payment by MasterCard or Visa suggested, but I will hold items for 10 days pending receipt of check if you prefer.

Illustrations of books in the Specials section may show representative images and not the exact item. If you hover your mouse pointer over a picture, you should see a small message box stating if the image is representative or of the exact item.

Finlands Oval Stamps 1856-1860: (Linder, 1956; "Finlands Ovalmärken") Published by the Finnish Post Office, this was and still much remains, the definitive work on the classic oval-shaped Finnish stamps (Scott #1-3). 160 pages, softbound, with text completely in Swedish. (For the English reader, at least Swedish is easier to follow and translate than Finnish. The website https://translate.google.com is very helpful.). This covers the complete life of the Oval stamps, starting with their background and conception, through their production and varieties, and their use, including examples of rare items. Suitably well illustrated. A must-have reference for the collector of Finnish or World early classics! This example must have had, on page 145, the 1956 reprints of Scott #1-2, but they are not present. (Not all copies originally had the reprints, but I have never seen a copy that still has the reprints.) This example is autographed and dated by somebody other than the author, probably a postal official. An excellent example, in virtually-new condition, with strong binding, no defects, and excellent appearance. This is only the second example I have recorded having since 2000 and perhaps earlier.

(Finland) "Ring" Stamps and Postal Stationery 1891 Issue: (Arvelin, 1991; Rengasmerkit ja-Ehiöt 100 Vuotta 1.5.1991; The Ring Stamp and Postal Stationery Centennial May 1, 1991) Issued on the 100th anniversary of the 1891 "Ring" stamps and stationery. These stamps were the first Russian-design stamps issued in Finland and were differentiated from Russian stamps by "rings" added to the design. The design was in use to about 1911. This book covers the history leading up to the stamp design and release of the stamps, production details, and the use of the stamps and related-design postal stationery. Includes many of the postal rates in use during this period. The book concludes with a large section illustrating and describing the details of use of covers and stationery. Text and picture captions complete in BOTH Finnish and ENGLISH. 96 numbered pages, perfect bound, card cover. Excellent images quality. This book was very popular while it was in print. It is now quite hard to find and it has been many years since I have been able to offer an example. This example is gently used, with the pages in near-new condition.

This example has been de-acquisitioned from a library, thus the cover bears some library markings and a little wear, but the pages are in excellent condition.

Finland Handbook Volume 1 - 1970s Series - Softbound: (FFF, various authors, 1975; Suomen Postimerkkien Kasikirja I) Opens with the basics of Finnish philately, early history of the post, stamp printing, paper, watermarks, perforating, types of postmarks, etc. Starts the stamp handbooks with the Oval issues and the 1860 kopek Serpentine issues (see SPF English translation). Completely in Finnish (dense text, but useful illustrations). 136 pages. Softbound. Excellent used condition (some sort of label removed from front cover), deaccessioned library copy. Binding is very solid (almost like new -- unusual for this). Long out of print and seldom offered in good condition.

Finland Handbook Volume 2 - 1970s Series - Softbound: (FFF, various authors, 1975; Suomen Postimerkkien Kasikirja II) Includes the 1866 Serpentine issues (see SPF English translation), 1875 4-Numeral issues (see SPF English publications), 1855 4-Numeral issues, 1889 3-Numeral issues, and the 1891 "Rings" Russian designs. Completely in Finnish (dense text, but lots and lots of very useful illustrations). 196 pages. Softbound. Excellent used condition (some sort of label removed from front cover), deaccessioned library copy. Binding is very solid (unusual for this), but is used. Long out of print and seldom offered in good condition. This volume is probably the most difficult to obtain.

Finland Handbook Volume 7 (VII) - 1970s Series - Softbound: (FFF, various authors, 1978; Suomen Postimerkkien Kasikirja VII) The handbook from the 1970s series that covers: the stamp papers used 1969-78, 1963 definitive design, 1968-78 booklets, 1974 definitive design, 1969-78 stamp issues, 1963-78 bus stamps, and the 1970-78 postal stationery. There is a lot of useful technical and production detail included that is not found in any catalog. Though the text is only in Finnish, the listings are well structured so it is fairly straight forward to figure things out; and text you do not understand can usually be translated using https://translate.google.com website. This has been out of print for decades, but is still the key source for much of this information. Quite hard to find. When last available new, my selling price was $29.95! It has probably been 20 years since I have even been able to offer a used example! Though printed in 1978, this example is in "brand new" condition; the binding has never been "opened". It is as nice an example as one could hope for.

The Revenue Stamps of Finland: (Olander and Ittel, 1969) One of the first English-language (also with German text) publications on the subject, really quite complete and well-developed for its time. While subsequent catalogs are more complete, this is still interesting and useful. Photocopied (not sure if original method of reproduction or done later) 5.5 x 8.5 inches with comb binding. The comb needs to be replaced (can be done at any good copy shop for just a couple dollars). A must-have if you collect these stamps. Like-new condition (other than the fragile comb).

The Early Postmarks of Finland (Hardbound): (Gummesson, Ossa, Stenberg, 1974; Suomen Vanhimmat Paikkakuntaleimat) The classic book on the postmarks of pre-stamp covers and early stamp (Ovals and Serpentines) issues. Complete ENGLISH, Finnish, and German text. Excellent illustrations and with RARITY FACTORS for all cancel types and colors in each era. OUT OF PRINT and in strong demand. While the outer paper dust jacket is slightly worn, the book itself is in pristine. like-new condition. This book is hard to find; it remains as useful as the day it was issued.

Finland Cancellation Handbook: 2-Ring Postmarks: Published in 1978, this is still the latest word on the subject. Extremely important and useful book that is a must-have for all collectors of Finnish covers or postal stationery in the 1873-1893 period. Excellent English introduction; includes rarity factors. Heavily illustrated, hardbound. Other than very minor wear on the paper dust jacket, this example is in like-new condition. Current basic pricing (but not by color) of these cancellations can be found in the various recent specialized stamp catalogs, however, this book remains extremely useful.

Lapland Postal History and Cancellations: (Helkiö, 1984; Lapin Läänin Postihistoriaa) The primary listing of Polar-region towns with hundreds of illustrations of postmarks. Great maps, list of numeral cancels used in the area, and includes the "lost territories" (now in Russia) of Petsamo and Salla. In Finnish, but extremely useful and easy to use. No pricing, but no book has pricing for these postmarks. Out of print and seems to be out of stock everywhere, but still the primary reference. Excellent very gently used condition.

(Finland) Forwarding Agents: (Dromberg, 1985) Handstamps and manuscript markings of forwarding agents on mail TO Finland during the 1800s. This will also be of interest to many collectors of early European and world-wide postal history. It is the only book I know of that discusses forwarding markings on mail TO Finland. Extensive illustrations; Swedish text and an ENGLISH introduction, softbound, 108 pages. Only 300 printed -- really quite scarce. Very gently used; binding with slight wear, pages appear to never have been used.

Finnish Mail Censorship: (Moxter, 1975; "Die Postzensur in Finnland") This is the "yellow book" published by the FNS in Germany. It is written in German, but there is an English introduction. This covers WWI and WWII censorship with many illustrations. Much has been learned and published since 1975, but this is still a useful illustrated introduction. This has always been a scarce book (I have probably only had 6 copies in the last 30 years). Prior to a more recent publication, this would have quickly sold for $40. This example appears to be in absolutely like-new condition, never even "opened" (the best condition I have ever had on this book).

This covers WWI and WWII censorship with many illustrations. Much has been learned and published since 1975, but this is still a useful illustrated introduction. This example appears to be in absolutely like-new condition, looks like it has never been opened" but the title page bears a neat, small signature of previous owner and famous Finland collector M.P. Hvidonov.

Helsingfors Stamp Collectors Society Jubilee Book 1953: (HFF, 1953) Following on a similar 1943 book, this book was published for the 60th anniversary of the society. Includes several useful articles: Finnish Pre-Philately; Oval Stamps; Serpentine Stamp Issues with very unusual color pictures; Rare postmarks 1847-1952; Tammerfors Local Post, an extensive important article; Fournier Forgeries; amendments and extensions to the 1943 book. This volume is little known and rarely offered. In Finnish, softbound, 104 pages. Very good used condition for this scarce book.

Finnish Picture Post Card Artists: (Johanson, Termonen; 1983; Suomalaista Postikortti Taidetta, Osa 1) A very interesting overview of the artist-signed cards of 110 artists, showing the "signatures" and examples of the card styles. Titles as volume 1, however, this is the only volume I can recall ever seeing. Finnish picture post cards are a fascinating subject. In Finnish, but so well illustrated that the text is almost not needed. This example has a bend on the front cover, but otherwise appears to be essentially brand new, never read; the binding has never been "cracked".
